Saints allegedly put Smallbone on sale for £8m 17:47 - Aug 13 with 1592 viewsLondonSaint76

According to this article (see link below) we are prepared to let WS go for £8m - good luck with getting that when he will be a freebie next summer. I’d say we’d do well getting £5/6m - probably end up a loan again as with Stoke last time but then nothing next summer… If Still is not interested in playing him then get him gone for £5m if needs be and add that as part of the payment for JR from Coventry if they play hardball over his fee.

Let’s just hope no Turkish Clubs take an interest 😀

I wouldnt be surprised if hes been offered a new contract !

After the farce of Stephens being given a three year extension.

Smallbone blows cold more than hot and thus should be found on the bench.

Smallbone was a very good squad member in our last promotion campaign, might not be a Premier League quality player but cuts it at Championship level

43 regular season starts and 8 sub appearances in a 46 game regular season with 6 goals and 3 assists was a good contribution to 2023/24.

Add to that 3 starts in the 3 play off games with 1 goal and 1 assist.

Smallbone should deserves some more respect than he is getting here

Have to agree with you Nick, I don’t get all the Smallbone bashing.

As you’ve pointed out he was good for us in our last championship campaign.

How many points did he cost us? Whenever he came on as sub, we effectively handed control of the game to the opposition, who then proceeded to score a couple of goals.

He's a liability. He can't sprint, he can't tackle, he just wanders around aimlessly off the pace.

He's one of the few players I've ever seen at this level who has no acceleration whatsoever. He just jogs around at one pace as the game passes him by. League Two or the National League will be more his level.

Just looking at his 8 sub appearances.

Bristol City home 8 minutes 1-0 win to Saints
Watford Away 3 minutes 1-1 injury time goal due to Bazunu mistake.
Swansea home 33 minutes 5-0 to us.
Norwich Away 5 minutes 1-1 at the time he came on and game ended that way.
Ipswich away 8 minutes James bree sent off 3 minutes later at 2-2 lost 3-2
Blackburn away 28 minutes 0-0
Preston home 20 minutes won 3-0
Leicester away 50 minutes came on 1-0 down lost 5-0

Sorry Dirk but the stats dont say that whenever he came on we handed control to the opposition, in 5 of those games we either won or drew with the result being the same at the moment he came on.

In the other 3 sub appearances, 2 of them were lost in the last minute due to circumstances not related to Smallbone, only the Leicester game could you say that we lost control after we came on, but it didn't change the result we were already losing

I think Smallbone will be a handy squad player this season. I think injuries have curtailed his potential a bit. His biggest problem is that it always looks like hes jogging around

"2 of them were lost in the last minute due to circumstances not related to Smallbone"

You're right: when he comes on it's like playing with 10 men. You could say the whole game is "not related to Smallbone".

You can see it all here (without the cherry picking):

Agree with the mention of him being a good asset in a promo season. Yes he has his limitations, but he played his part in that season for sure. 8m is too much though. Cannot see him much over 3-5m.

At the end of Smallbone's successful loan to Stoke 3 seasons ago, there was a lot of talk about him leaving us permanently; we had just got relegated and he only had a year left on his contract. Loads on here were in uproar saying he's exactly the type of player we need in the Championship, we shouldn't be selling someone with proven quality, he's one of our own blah blah blah.

In the end he stayed an was given a new contact and everyone was happy. He ended up being a useful squad player for us and contributed to getting us promoted, including scoring the all important first goal in the play off semi.

Back in the Prem last season he of course struggled, like many of the other Championship standard players we have in our squad did, but why hate on him so much? It just shows how many clueless drippy fans we have that moan for the sake of it.

I think a lot of people are judging Will by his looks & not by his ability.
OK he's not a Premier Lge player but he's a more than adequate Championship player.

You have hit the nail on the head, " but why hate on him so much" exactly he has always given 100%, last season he was found wanting in the Premier League, but he was far from being alone in that.

He was more than just a squad player in our last Championship season, he started the majority of the games 38 out of 49 in the play offs and after the 8 as sub, missed just 3.

I like Will Smallbone.

He seems a pretty genuine bloke who has had to overcome health challenges, and he does support the club.

I just don't think he influences games often enough.

I know Nick has the stats to disprove me, but the new manager seems to want a more high-tempo game, which I don't think suits Will Smallbone, as he seems quite one-paced to me.

Who knows, he may end up at Glasgow Rangers on loan, and may do a decent job for Brent.

He's never worth £8m even at the best of times. What this probably means, if true, is that the club are ready to let him go for £4m.

It's true that he contributed to the last Championship season but he's one of those players who are very much more the RM type than the Will Still type. A slow game suits him better. Still says he wants more intensity, faster passing and running than the players have been used to, which isn't really Smallbone's game. Maybe he can adapt and learn but I wouldn't be surprised if Will Still saw him as a fringe player at best.

Just seen your post which I said much the same as. Will Still hasn't has much success with the high intensity game yet, but if that's the direction we're moving in then it's not really Smallbone's thing.

Perhaps Smallbone won't suit Still's way of playing, that is fine, I don't have a problem with that, as mentioned in an earlier post why do some people have to slag him off so much.

He did a job for us in the last Championship season we should thank him for that and wish him every success in his future career whether that is at Saints or otherwise

Got to agree that this is the impression he gives. Looks 'one-paced' but maybe it's just how he seems.

And I think his footballing brain and passing is good. Maybe he's the midfielder that Pirlo could have been.
