Mcnultys defence 09:26 - Aug 24 with 5122 views | somdale | I will in no way attempt to defend Mcnultys selection yesterday, only to say We should have won the game. But Mcnulty is a young Manager still learning, yet in his time here he has improved us beyond recognition from the the club he took over He has brought sanity and a calmness to the club. With the help of the Ogdens he has brought together a very talented squad, who always mention BJ in their interviews as one of the reason they signed. He has made mistakes, but in the games that counted. Spennymoor, regardless of what people say about this game, we should have won it convincingly. Southend, I really think the loss of Waller had a direct affect on how this game played out, I don't feel BJ trusted the new Keeper and did his substitutions accordingly. Yesterday was on him, but again we should have won that game. He is still very inexperienced, he has never managed games of such magnitude like a semi final or a huge play off game, how many Dale managers have? He needs to learn and learn quickly, but he should do it here and I find talk of replacing him very short sighted. We made some big mistakes manager wise after Hilly left, I believe we are in good safe hands now and the club is going in the right direction, blimey we will still lose games, but I think we are going to witness a very good exciting season. Last season we saw a cup semi final and a play off place, thats not bad for a second season, and I feel its been played down because of how it all finished. Look at our history and last season has to go down as one of our most successful. BJ has brought the spotlight back on himself with yesterday's team selection, but we can't just play the sack him card everytime we lose a game.
Mcnultys defence on 09:49 - Aug 24 with 2966 views | dannyuk | Don't want him sacked, just to acknowledge that it was his mistake yesterday and to then learn from it. Not stubbornly say it's the right thing to do to suit his own agenda and have the fans worried he will do it again. He can learn from mistakes if he acknowledges that's what they are, but he doesn't seem to want to. He can defend it all he wants with "I believe and I'm told we have a strong squad" but sending out a whole new team after a classy performance from the "first 11" is piling unnecessary pressure on them players to perform the same way or not get into the first 11. It's terrible management in that moment and I, and seemingly everyone else, believe it's cost us yesterday's game and all the momentum we had. Now it's done with and we move on and hope to win tomorrow to bring back the positivity. [Post edited 24 Aug 9:50]

We were top of the league, 100% record, best start to a season in a quarter of a century. He didn't even seem that gutted about the result. He was happy his 2nd string had controlled the game and limited the opposition to 2 chances and his best players had a well earned rest. [Post edited 24 Aug 10:31]

Excellent post. But you’re probably a bit more optimistic than me with your last line. McNulty has brought unnecessary negativity to so many areas of the club through his own decision making. It will take a real shift in his attitude to recover from that. It’s not too late either, because he can come out and say that on reflection there were too many changes. But it’s doubtful that will happen.

Im still struggling to understand why professional athletes require a 'rest' after 4 league games, they've just had weeks and weeks off work to 'rest' and keep their fitness ticking over, then you hear the other bullshit excuse that theyre not 'up to speed yet' after so few games, seems like they've got every base comfortably covered 👍

Go and re read his 5th line. He has brought sanity to the club. Yesterday was the most insane decision I have ever witnessed. Having a pint at 2.30pm i saw the team sheet and was very very concerned then. In one stroke all the feelgood factor of 3/3 has evaporated for many. Its just not acceptable to be so left field with your decision making and carry on like all is ok. I had phonecalls and txts last night and conversations in the pub with people i dont know asking me what the hell went on (I was wearing Dale colours and people actively came over to speak about this ludicrous decision). The pressure to win on Monday now has ramped up ten fold all down to yesterday.
Mcnultys defence on 10:16 - Aug 24 with 2811 views | Daley_Lama | ‘Should have won the game’ is completely irrelevant when we ‘actually lost the game’ after 11 changes. Agree on the Spennymoor game, poor decisions by offence and great defending by Spennymoor defence kept it at 2-1 and gave opportunity to Spennymoor. Southend un-doing was moving Tobi from LWB, putting Beckwith at LWB, putting Hogan at LCB and Mitchell as ghost striker for the last 30 minutes.

Nobody disputes what went on yesterday and the ramifications. It’s not a competition to be the most offended by it. Everyone is annoyed. But are you disputing that McNulty has not brought some “sanity” and steadied the ship over the last two years? And even if that one line isn’t the best in the context of yesterday, does it then make it an entirely “rubbish” post?

2500 Rochdale fans all getting excited by the first 3/3 in 25 years. having a left field punch to the stomach.. have some of that to burst your excitement bubble. You cant select teams because an injury "might" happen. The decision yesterday to change all 11 players was a disgrace. In General the club has moved forwards monumentally in the last 2 years whilst Jim has been here but after HIS decision I am thinking it might have been inspite of him not because of him. I would say that NEVER in the history of professional football a team that had won 3 opening games who were top of the table after a 4-0 win changed every single player 11 for 11. I am really angry and quite upset by it 442. Don't underestimate just how many people are in the same angry / frustrated and upset boat. Do we revert to team A now tomorrow?... wow that will really help the 11 lads that started the game yesterday.

Where have I underestimated how people are feeling? See my other posts about how the decision making has created so many issues, including that of upsetting supporters. We all know and accept what happened yesterday was an absolute mess which the manager is responsible for. The opening post acknowledges that too. It doesn’t make it a “rubbish” post. That was unfair in my opinion.

Mcnultys defence on 11:17 - Aug 24 with 2628 views | SaxonDale | There have been some really good posts on here, and I'd like to think I’ve been as supportive and patient with McNulty as most during his time at the club. That said, yesterday’s defeat ranks right up there with Southend and Spennymoor in terms of frustration. Let’s be honest—McNulty has done a solid job. When he took over, the club was in an absolute mess for various reasons, and he's steadied the ship and guided us to a more competitive place. But for me, the jury is still out on whether he can take that final step. We all know this squad is good enough for the play-offs—anything less would be a complete and utter failure. But can we be champions? On the playing side, that question still remains unanswered for me. I’ve never seen a team make 11 changes in a league game before, and to do that while sitting top of the league is baffling. Sure, we might still have lost had we played a stronger side—but at least then we could’ve taken something from the performance and used these final days of the transfer window to strengthen accordingly. As it stands, I don’t think we’ve learned anything useful from that game. Take Hogan, for example—he clearly struggles to distribute the ball as well as other defenders. Why not give players like Gordon, Gilmour, East, or Beckwith a chance to support him in building attacks? There’s no reason he couldn’t have rested five players yesterday and another five on Monday—it would’ve kept things fresher without completely sacrificing shape, rhythm, or leadership on the pitch. Yesterday could’ve further pushed the idea to the rest of the league that we’re serious contenders. That opportunity was wasted. McNulty is sometimes too much of a 'textbook manager', in my opinion. He doesn’t always factor in the less tangible aspects of a game. I can’t help but see similarities at times between Jim and how Southgate was for England—organised, level-headed, and clearly capable of stabilising things, but perhaps lacking the instinct or boldness needed to get over the line when it really matters. Remember Dagenham away last season? The team was set up for Waller to release Kairo with a long ball over their high line, exploiting their slower centre-back. But Waller’s first three kicks were all 10 yards off target, and the plan was never adjusted. Similarly, the changes against Southend might have made sense in theory, but they never looked like working in practice. I genuinely can’t think of a way he could’ve turned the mood in the fanbase so negative, so quickly. Unfortunately, I think it will take at least a few weeks—and some convincing performances—to turn that around.

Some good points, Saxon, but the transfer window doesn't apply at National League level. Remember last season we were bringing in players all the time, either permanently (Hogan, etc) or on loan (the aforementioned Waller, Jili, Okeke, Bird, etc)

Exactly, to make 11 changes has got to be up there with the most insane footballing decisions Big Jim has ever made, he'll most likely screw up again and again, he doesn't seem to learn from his mistakes and as far as I'm aware he hasn't ever acknowledged any responsibility, I spoke with my son post match, his summery was " if it's going well Jim will find some way to screw it up" although he didn't say screw ! That sums Jim up for me. Just to add, Jim seems to lack any conserns over the consequences of his actions, brushing his mistakes under the carpet and plucking the odd positive out of one massive negative !

The 'inability to see out games' again is usually down to one man's poor decision making, you can add countless games last season to when he let the game just whistle past us without doing much to change the outcome, he's very much a reactive manager and waits for things to happen, especially when the pressures on in the bigger games.

Another baffling decision was when he brought Mancini on we started to be more positive with Mancini finding space and trying to thread balls through to the front men resulting in our goal Once Gilmour came on he moved Mancini away from the central area and he then became almost anonymous and our attacking options virtually disappeared

Baffling was a comment he came out with in his post match interview following our great performance against Gateshead..he said that Boreham Wood was the more complete performance this season. Who does he think he is trying to kid? The comment was obviously an attempt to downplay Wednesdays performance in an atrempt to justify fielding a completely different team against Brackley. Instead he should have been shouting from the rooftops about what a stand out display it was from all the players. One thing we did learn yesterday was that McNulty isn't bothered about fielding his strongest starting eleven in every league game. We need a new manager i think. [Post edited 24 Aug 17:07]

Yes, a string of wins does tend to soften your stance and you think ' hang fire here, maybe he's learning'. That's being fair to him isn't it? With big Jim you always want him to prove people wrong, come up trumps. But in the end he always lets you down doesn't he? With Dale managers, it’s been pretty obvious when they should go. McNulty is a rare beast where he gets some to change their stance game to game. However, I don’t think he’s ever changed who he is or what his overall philosophy is about the game is. He has clearly learnt in terms of working out how we can play more effectively but the fundamentals remain the same. It’s like saying there was no “tippy tappy” playing it around at the back in the good wins or that we eradicated the risky play near our own goal, because it remains. With more options attached. It’s easy to ignore the bits we don’t like when the results are good though. All of that has little to do with yesterday though. Not sure I can ever recall a time when team choice has had such an overarching effect on so many different aspects of the club. Fans/players/atmosphere/outside perception.

The true impact of McNulty's bizarre decisions yesterday, might not be felt for many many months till May 2026 when we are 3 points off the top and have to run the risk of play offs again to attain the Promised Land. The tippy tappy stuff at the back isn't something i welcome whether we win or lose, i don't see the point in it. We do it when the opposition aren't even pressing us, not sure what purpose it serves apart from causing tension in the stadium, rushed hoofs up the pitch or conceding stupid goals. I never say that we played well because we played tippy tappy in n around our box. I point it out though when it leads to us conceding daft goals, it would be strange not to. McNulty is fortunate he's managing in a poor league, he had good players last year and he's got better players now. He'll always win games at this level because we have a advantage over a lot of teams, better players. I also disagree with opinion that we always play tippy tappy around our own penalty area because in some games we havent seen it as much. No doubt you will point out that we do though. Its a high risk policy with too little reward, it might work once in a blue moon. At some point it will dawn on you that the manager is the weakest link, or he might prove the doubters wrong, it would be fantastic if he did. I think the quality in the squad will be the thing that will actually sink him, he wont be able to resist tinkering with theb team in order to give players game time and i think that will impact results. It could also affect squad moral. He disrespected Brackley and he'll do it again. [Post edited 24 Aug 18:39]

I point it out because it’s factually true. As posted the other night when we played backwards and in and around our area which led to our second goal. Presumably that was welcomed when the ball hit the net? Who said we “always” play “tippy tappy”? The point was the general philosophy of ball retention is there in all our games, we now have more options around that to mix it up successfully. This is no defence of risky passing around our own goal btw, have always been clear how much it frustrates in terms of conceding risky goals. It’s showing that McNulty has a way of playing win/lose/draw and irrespective of what he says or how he selects his teams. Edit to the edit: What does the “dawn on you” bit mean? Where is there any defence of the manager here, only analysis of what has actually occurred. [Post edited 24 Aug 18:39]
