I can honestly say for the 1st 83mins it was like Preston on repeat… Started well scored then lost our way and conceded, but step forward Saito who showed a piece of class with his goal and benefits of being two footed as the defender did not know what way to show him and bang goal. Good finish from Kone for the 3rd but at 2-1 I would have hooked for a defensive midfielder.. Die a bit of luck and got it today. MOM today and you can’t knock Madsen today but will go with Mbengue. I also thought Vale was a bit out of his depth, but Norrington-Davies could be answer to a problem.

I thought Mbengue started well and you have to love his attitude, but he was lucky to stay on and lucky not to conceded a penalty today. Some great moments, but some bits to work on for sure.
Saito was brilliant when he came on - I quite like we kept some an attacking formation, I never really like the sitting deep thing, don't think we are good at it so with this team prefer the try to kill the game on the break.
Agreed re Madsen, especially first half, some nice link up play, won some heards, tackle - not Man of the Match stuff but good. Nice to see.
Thought Vale did ok, takes a mean corner. I said the same at half time, Preston mark2, sure enough early ish second half equalizer, and them getting on top But we stuck at it through a decent bench. Chair and Poku to come back as well.
It's being so happy that keeps me going.

Think Vale needs ball to feet which he wasn't really getting today. Too often the ball was played in front of him with a defender in the way. Not bad for a home debut though.

Yes, it wasn't perfect today and we will face tougher tests BUT it was the first time in years that we have actually looked dangerous up top. Loved Burrell's aggression when he came on and two up top looked bloody good. Keeper still an issue though.
Relief that we won when we don't normally play well at lunchtime and it was a derby win which have been scarce for a while. No doubt Wrexham will be a tougher challenge as a promoted club compared to Charlton.

Walsh: 4 Kicking was very poor; he did not even dive for the goal, which was not a fast shot at all. Good save from Leaburn which he tipped onto the cross-bar. Almost cost us another goal with his kicking. Time for Nardi to come when the transfer window has closes.
Dunne: 6 Better than last week and controlled his side, but against a poor Charlton side. Had a go at Walsh for not kicking to him in the last few mins and Madsen for not contributing more to the end game.
Mbengue: 6 Decent performance, but he needs to watch is mad rushes of blood. Should have got a 2nd yellow and sent off at 1-1, the only reason he didn't was that the ref did not see it, the lino gave it, and as a result, the ref did not card him. This ref was a homer and gave us a lot of the 50/50 decisions, we won't get that again so he needs to watch it. WAs caught out a lot when Charlton played the channels.
Morrison: 6 Decent performance and really controlled Leaburn a lot. Got carded, though, when caught out of position and turned.
Norrington-Davies: 5 Decent performance only blighted by being partly responsible for the goal in letting the winger have a striker unchallenged. Apart from that though kept him mostly under control and unlucky not to score in the first half. Not a bad debut, hopefully he improves.
Varane: 6 Decent enough, but not imposing, had to carry Madsen in the 2nd half.
Madsen: 5 Awesome for the first 20 mins. I take it back, he can run, I saw it in those first 20. With his skill and tireless effort, he was outstanding, charging about, tackling, pressing, marking up, and chasing back. Charlton couldn't handle it. And then he stopped doing that and back into the game they came. At the start of the second half, the rest of the team flew out of the blocks again, but he did not, and it was not the same. Our fast start in the 2nd faded after 5 minutes due to him not running. Dunne had a go at him just after Saito scored. Did some defensive work when Charlton brought on more attackers; they had four of them at one point. I worry that these 20 minutes were a one-off. Really, he should be doing this for 60 minutes, and then all would be fine; we would win most games if he did that with his skill.
Dembele 4: Was involved in the first goal to find Dales run, and he actually did some tackles, but was poor and not in the game. He looks unfit and tired.
Vale 6: Decent performance, we now know his position as the 10 AMC. Great move for the first goal and cross. Also, lots of nice link-up play, helping us out of defence, but it was Charlton, so we shall see. He looks useful against the grind-you-down type of teams, as they won't cope with his quality passing and movement.
Smyth 6: Decent 45 minutes and good movement for the goal. He got lucky as the keeper dived out of the way, but he hit the target, which in the past he has failed to do. Charlton did not like playing against him.
Kone 7: Held the ball up well (unlike Celar who failed to trap anything), nice keep it simple passes, 2nd half won more headers too, kept their backline occupied, deft leave for the first goal and also when 1-1 with the keeper finished it off. Also managed a full game, so we know he's ready to start against Wrexham. Adapted to the Champ well so far, but it was only Chalrton still.
Subs: Kolli 5: Didn't impose himself on the game, but was full of running and headers. So, kept their backline occupied when they were chasing the game.
Esquerdinha 6: Helped create two of the goals, but also left gaps at the back. Needs to watch out for his defensive cover, as otherwise we shall get caught out by better teams than Charlton.
Burrell 6: Pressed Charlton's backline hard, made it hard for them to move up, and when they did at the end, deft flick to put Kone through. Decent enough, but needs to make more runs.
Saito 8: Quality. Put the goal aside; he was running back, defending, and taking the game to them. His tactical awareness often led him to drop into the centre, which Charlton had vacated, making it an easier pass than a long diagonal. As a result, the attacks could occur more easily, as the rest of the team could find him with a simpler pass. Also, won some headers as is the way with his Jack in the Box jumps. And remember, this is with no real pre-season. Makes a mockery of the others who need to "come up to speed". Just get on with it like Saito does. MoM as he turned the game from 1 point into 3.
Hayden 5: No real time to do anything, but I noticed we looked hard to break down when he came on.
Some other interesting points: We know now that Charlton are worse than us. This was a team that was in form and lost to a QPR side that was not and still has problems. Charlton will struggle, but the manager claims he has more players on the way. We shall see, I think they will be down there with Oxford this season and possibly us, but we can escape such a mess if we sort our problems out and quickly.
The starting 11 had an average age of 23.7, which is remarkably low. Dunne and Smyth were the elders at 27. Crackers that. It gets better, the team members who finished the match had an average age of 23.3, with Hayden being the eldest at 30. That's seriously building for the future.
Subs not used: Nardi, Cook, Field, Morgan. That's quite a few of last year's first-team players not used here; a message to them, and our squad looks better now on paper. With the walking wounded returning in the next month, we shall need them as the fixtures only get harder for us. We shall start to play more teams like Coventry than Charlton.
I am hoping Nardi returns for Wrexham as the transfer window is shut, and if we wanna sell him in Jan for whatever, we need to display him more.
Julien may move Smyth over to the right to accommodate Saito and drop Dembele to the bench. I think he will keep Vale in that 10 for now, unless Chair is back. The rest of the team he will keep the same, as they won. Hopefully, RNG gets better, and then we won't need to worry too much about defence anymore. What Madsen will appear is anyone's guess. Really, someone needs to tell him that if he does not run, he will be subbed and actually do it.

100%. There was a moment in the 1st half when we had 3 on 1 and Varane only had to play to Vales feet and take the return on the halfway line. He played it 20 yards in front and Vale was never going to win a foot race. Brain dead from Varane.
We have players who want the ball, the CM just need to get it to them.

Good analysis. The only thing I'd question is Charlton being a form team - they scored one goal in their first three games. I have no idea if they're relegation candidates but bottom six looks likely.
I think we'll be fine. All of a sudden we have a bench you're not looking at through your fingers.
I think if we can get the team fit and well-drilled, each knowing their own and each other's role, there is a enough talent (and finally some depth) to be a very decent top half team. GK position needs attention though.

Pretty much how I see it. Fully fit the squad is very very decent. Lots of options, Lots of potential, But can we get them all fully fit consistently enough?

4 for Walsh is more an indication of your blinkered opinion than an honest appraisal of his performance especially as you marked Dunne higher who, IMO, didn't have a great game yesterday. I am guessing that wanting Walsh dropped for Nardi means you haven't seen the Plymouth cup game.
The grass is always greener.

The OP states -"Good finish from Kone for the 3rd but at 2-1 I would have hooked for a defensive midfielder.. "
When Saito scored in the 84th minute, we had already made all 5 substitutions.....
Also, you can only make subs at HT, and 3 other occasions. We brought on Kolli at HT. Then, Saito (59 mins), Burrell & Esquerdinha (68) and Hayden (81)

Vale needs time but at least we didn't give up or sit back today. The subs worked well and generally at the right time.
Reading the Charlton board interesting many discussing how we know QPR aren't fit and run out of steam after 25 minutes. Amazes me how the simplest thing to get right - fitness we can't do? Watching Bournemouth against Spurs they were so fit and dominated Spurs. More Emperors new clothes 5hit at Rangers I'm afraid.

I did watch that game. Is that the one where Nardi saves a penalty?
