OK I’m going to say it…… 20:45 - Sep 2 with 1869 viewsPatfromPoole

I would take a point now against the Skates.

Increasingly worried about this game.

Their signing of Chaplin to play alongside Bishop and Murphy gives them a genuine threat up front and I struggle to see us keeping a clean sheet.

First goal often so crucial in these games.

They’re not a great side, but they are competitive, and I fear their game is more suited to a derby than ours.

I just wish this game was a month or two later in the season.

Just shaking my head. We’re saints and they’re pompey…

Come on. If we go into the game as fans, or players, with this defeatist (or draw-taking) attitude, what’s the point? Anything other than total victory over those c*nts is not acceptable.

😲 We have to win this game. We're at home. We have to beat the skates.

Oh, I totally agree.

I just am worried that the game isn’t coming at a good time for us.

Still has a tough call as to how many of the new signings he puts in, and it’s a big risk to put in a load of players who haven’t played in the Championship before, let alone the bear pit of a heated derby.

It’s just my way of preparing myself for the day not ending in huge celebrations. And massively hoping my fears are misplaced.

I said this on a post a few days ago.
We have the international break to integrate the new players and we have to hope that's enough. If he's true to his word we'll go with a flat back four, which might stop our 3 CB'S tripping over themselves 🤞
We have enough going forward & just need to defend better.

2 or 3 - 1 to Saints

They will raise their game but so will we.

Our squad has more quality than theirs.

That’s it really .

I'm hoping we have enough going forward now to score a few but I suspect we'll give one away and Stephens will have another calamity.

I think the rest of the season is going to be "we'll score more than you" because our defence is poor and our skipper could lead a very well behaved dog.

Wouldn’t bet against Stephen’s taking an early bath. In the heat of the moment I just get the feeling he could be prone to doing something daft.

Sound thinking. We hardly posed a big scoring threat before we sold our best two outfield players, so I don’t see that we have improved on the previous standard.I don’t think that there are many on here that consider being number one pick goalkeeper you only have to be better than McCarthy.

Sad to say, I am with Pat on this one. This is the most important game of the season and I don't see us being good enough. Yes, I would like us to beat Pompey, but we simply don't have the work ethic to come out and play solidly, energetically and well for ninety minutes. They do and will want it more than us because we are at home.

Our only hope is to play McCarthy and drop Stephens but even if we play the new guys, we will be a disorganised rabble at the back (oh, for the days of Fortress St Mary's,) and woefully blunt at the front where we lack accurate firepower.

I won't be happy with a point.

I want us to win convincingly but in real life, I doubt very much if it will happen. If we take a big defeat by two goals or more, there will be the usual moaning at SR and then things will carry on just as they are, which has been the same for years and explains the continued decline into mediocrity of this once great club.

Defeat at home to Pompey, with what many regard as the strongest squad in the division? Er I think not!
We have more than enough to beat them by 2 or 3.
Match their running and effort and our extra quality should tell. I am pretty confident we'll win this one. I'd certainly be more worried if I was them.

That said Still needs to win. We haven't seen much from his team so far so they had better show up this time.

I confess I hate this Derby.
It’s too important not to lose.
I remember the 4-1 defeat and it took too long to get over it.
Of course that was put that right with our 4-0 win at their place.
Being a Saints fan is a rollercoaster of a ride but I will never want to get off.

It was beyond painful.

As usual, we arrived there late from the train, but in reality not arriving at all would have been preferable.

The only highlight of that day was the fat unlce albert skate being coined back into his flat by the saints fans on the way in.

The rest of the day was beyond painful, and also why re-claiming the way to amarillo song was done with such gusto

Three things shall I tell you about the skates.

3. They are c*unts.

He's been banned from Fratton Park a few times - the last time being when he was caught in a ladies toilet there - but I can't recall him ever being banned from St. Mary's, even when he urinated on his seat.

It could get messy as, at his age, his incontinence is only going to get worse. Let's hope he doesn't eat a curry.

The best game I’ve ever been to apart from the 76 cup final was Moran silencing the skates at Fratton in 1984 , 9000 saints fans going absolutely fu**in mental right at the end and no time back for them . The second biggest spare was Shane long scoring at Anfield but nothing will ever beat that moment in 1984. A real special moment .

I’m still not over the 4-1 at Fratton.
