Except that Ben Williams is the Head of Sporting Operations, which is a new term, employed by several clubs, instead of Director of Football. And Ben Williams is arguably less qualified than Nourry given his career was in cycling and pure fitness prior to QPR. And that is a very different beast.

But they could communicate this to their customers, rather than us discussing it on a messageboard six days later to find out. (I wonder how the beer hut was able to take payments - this could be explained too). Club communication is rotten, no one can convince me otherwise until communication improves. Do you remember when Lee Hoos used to do his quarterly business Q&As with fans on the official site? That is just one example of how communication has worsened.

That was also a good way to stop the silly situation where you have the manager on the panel at the fans forum but you have to spend 20 minutes running through things like stewarding of club coaches to away games while he just sits there.

Summer Transfer Window - Patreon Podcast on 10:44 - Sep 5 by nix | I don't know if you'd put me in the category of Nourry supporter. I'm suspecting yes. The thing is that's what annoys me most about this whole debate. I'm not a Nourry supporter, never have been. I'm a QPR supporter. Why box people in? If he proved to be long term shit I wouldn't back him. QPR I've supported in the Premier, League 1 and the Championship; that's the difference. Do I think he's done nothing wrong? Of course not. Do I understand why people are concerned? Absolutely. That's not blind faith. I just think there have been enough positive changes in areas I personally think we were weak: the DS and negotiating deals both commercially and related to playing staff to not write him off. I have also challenged criticisms that are just based on speculation or what I see as stretching the facts. As for the playing style I agree teams are bigger and more physical but I think it's partly down to the age old issue of what's available in our price range. If they were injury free, pacy, good attitude, technically sound, physically imposing they're like to be in the Prem already. This season we're compromising on lack of Championship experience. Last season it was that or physicality. We tried with Les injury records but that backfired with Amos, Hall and JCS (partly) although was a great success with Austin first time round. I'm hoping we'll be able to get the complete player going forward but it's not the easiest. |
Nit picking slightly . There is a group of posters on here (it doesn’t matter who they are) that generally back most things he does and put forward arguments against criticism of him in the main . That isn’t my opinion , that is a fact and they have every right to do so. How would you prefer I refer to them as a collective? “I just think there have been enough positive changes in areas I personally think we were weak: the DS and negotiating deals both commercially and related to playing staff to not write him off.” Again, the people critical of CN have all acknowledged what your above quote also states . There areas where improvements have been made for sure . The leap of faith is the playing side . To me , the important bit which some seem to just sketch over like it’s secondary . It’s the primary reason we are all fans , but we have just given CN and others that responsibility . He , nor BW have any sort of knowledge and experience yet they are moulding the way we play , now and into the future . It’s the ultimate ‘leap of faith’. That’s the concern . I’m not having a pop. I agree with much of what you say. I’m trying to explain my concerns and why I struggle to just climb on board , like Matt has , when you add the cloak and dagger / arrogance towards us as fans at times. | | | | Login to get fewer ads

Tbh I'm not sure how to take that. Does Belk have the experience to do that role, as it's a much wider remit than just player recruitment. Or does Nourry think that the DoF role is just about player recruitment? The game model for example, CN seemed to be leading on that previously which would normally be DoF remit.

Belk is not leading the game model side of things. Like I said, Williams is closer to being the DOF than Belk, which is a concern. Ultimately, I think the whole structure is designed to give Nourry complete control…if everything. He may want that but it’s very difficult to execute well on all theee responsibilities. As I said, it strikes me of naivety or arrogance. Hoos was a much more experienced operator and he had Les. Of course, if you believe Hoos is still very actively involved then you have Hoos and Nourry. Not much different to Hoos and Ferdinand. Does beg the question what Ben Williams does and whether you need a Head of Sporting Operations too. We only play one sport. Strikes me it’s too look after the fitness and conditioning side, to free Nourry to focus on the signings and player trading. But still a big ask to do that AND a genuine CEO role, if indeed he’s doing that and not Hoos in part still. Accountability stems from clarity.

Given Williams comes across as a glorified Joe Wicks (and not a nice one either, by all accounts), this is definitely one of the Not Good Things at the club currently.

The problem with CN is that he spouts a lot of stuff that, when you scratch the surface of it, just doesn’t hold up to scrutiny. The DOF role for example. In those recent interviews with Hoopsa and WLS he was asked about his experience for covering that role. He came out with the spiel about his 2-3 year involvement with football in roles which by any measure would not qualify anyone to be the one responsible for such a position at this level. In the interview with Conor when asked directly he replied (‘I’d be surprised’) to the effect that he believed only a minority of clubs in the Championship employed a DOF, again implying that it was somehow now a redundant role across the board, because that suited the narrative. Given he was employed by the club as a consultant for a year to examine our set up and how to improve it you would think that a good starting point might be to look at what clubs who are having greater success that us are doing that we might not be. And yet he claimed he didn’t know how many were using a DOF model. Really? A cursory look at clubs in the championship reveals the majority of clubs employ someone in that role, and most of them you would recognise as having long careers directly involved in football. Swansea, Millwall, Sheff Weds (then), Blackburn, just a selection of comparable teams who did and all of whom finished above us last season. Its spouting BS like this that loses credibility with people, just stop it, you might think it makes you look smart and clever but really it doesn’t. Be in no doubt too, The Hand of Hoos remains firmly on the tiller.

Where is this "not a nice one, by all accounts" in regard to a throwaway comment about Ben Williams. Appreciate most of us, are concerned about the management of injuries, and his actual job performance but such a comment just sounds like its a statement out of nowhere, because you not happy with how he is doing his job. Basically, can you elaborate on, "by all accounts", otherwise it sounds like you making it up to cover your own irritation at our lack of general improvements around injuries. Etc... Summer Transfer Window - Patreon Podcast on 15:24 - Sep 5 with 1638 views | BrianMcCarthy | Enjoyable listen. It's a shame that Matt Winton went overboard in his praise/defence of Nourry's suitability as DoF/CEO because I thought he lost all credibility and objectivity when he said that Nourry had more experience than Ferdinand. I also thought it slightly insulting and patronising to suggest that the reaction of the Rangers support at Watford was down to the beliefs of a few influential fans. I think Rangers fans are more intelligent than that, They're not the blindly idolising sandal-wielding crowd from The Life of Brian. Still, a calm and intelligent conversation. Thanks to everyone involved.

The reaction at Watford was in plain due to us being dreadful again, getting played off the park in the first half as we were several times last season and the season before and the season before that etc At some point when the same thing keeps happening people snap and it happening again at Watford 2 years after that 4-0 game was that moment for a lot of people

Exactly spot on Brian The narrative that some influential fans were to blame for the anger at Watford is not only nonsense , but actually encourages more hatred to people like Clive from the morons on social media . “On no but I don’t mean you Clive , I’ve never heard you say that Nourry was picking the team”, approximately 15 minutes after Clive had literally justified Dave Mc’s question with 3 or 4 different reasons as to why people think CN has an ‘influence’ , shall we say . Summer Transfer Window - Patreon Podcast on 16:27 - Sep 5 with 1385 views | simmo | One of the points above by Martin I completely agree with, that some of the 'green flags' from Matt made me check a little of my own negativity. The initial reaction to a lot of what I hear - and that includes on the pod - has been largely scepticism, but then that's a two way street as Hunter reiterated. I think that's ultimately my main issue. Stop trying to control our perception of the club and its decision makers. It's so PR obsessed and feels condescending that you don't think I/we can handle the fact you will make mistakes or get things wrong - especially when making such radical changes. There's been a lot of calling piss rain in these last few years and it's completely counter productive. This is an extremely difficult job in hard circumstances, we get it, we won't pin you to the wall if you falter as long as we know what you're trying to do and what the aim is. So take us with you, don't just ask us to trust blindly and wait on perceived results down the line. We do all want to the same thing generally speaking, and like it or not the club belongs to us as much as any director. Improve that side, get everyone on board through tangible actions not just expected sentiment, and I think you'll be harnessing something that separates us from everyone else.

Very conveniently side stepped that presentation of multiple reasoning, along with the experience counter from Hunter, and a few other things. If as Matt says there are people that are part of an anti-nourry agenda, he's the other side of that same coin. One-eyed af, and I took from his comments at the end that he's working with the club ATM too, which adds a punch or salt to it all. Either way, I appreciated the respectful and reasoned tone of the whole thing, and agree with people that said this was the best pod of the lot.
