Following an imminent confidence vote which is expected to oust the current prime minister. That’s 5 prime ministers in 3 years apparently. Even knocks our record out the park. Macron is the one hand picking them, perhaps it’s time he shouldered some of the blame?

Anyway here’s a quote from the soon to be ex PM of France referring to the fact that France has been running a defecit for 51 years and every year they owe their creditors a hundred billion euros. Lamenting the fact that many young people growing up these days will probably have to work well into their 70’s or even 80’s because there won’t be a pension for them. Have a read and see if it sounds familiar:

“"Our country works, thinks it is getting richer, and instead every year it becomes poorer. It's a silent, buried, invisible and unbearable haemorrhage."

Yes their most recent Prime minister before their latest one was the much vaunted ex EU commissioner and Brexit negotiator “adults in the room” Michel Barnier.

He barely lasted 3 months. Shortest tenure in the fifth republic. Funny how these highly successful appointed Eurocrats nearly always fall flat on their face when having to be accountable to an actual electorate. He’s basically their Liz Truss 😂

The usual story. Millions of people who don't understand that things have to be paid for.

I'd make it illegal to describe anything provided by the Government as "free". You don't get free healthcare or prescriptions. You get taxpayer funded healthcare and prescriptions.

If you’re not a taxpayer it is free though. Millions go from cradle to grave without paying a single penny of income tax or NI etc. Of course they will pay tobacco duty and VAT on all inclusive Jet2 holidays so a little bit goes back in the pot.

Not just them. Every single person employed by local or central Government is the same, unless they've got a private sector side gig.

Taxpayers need to be nurtured, encouraged, rewarded in the hope that they will increase in number, not squeezed for every penny that they have left.

Well the French opposition seems happy to pile on the debt by refusing a new budget, we all know where that leads, a debt crisis that hammers the masses.

Unfortunately France's problems stem from a faltering economy which is symptomatic of the whole undemocratic EU which promotes protectionism and stifles growth.
France's is higher than the UK as a proportion of GDP. This despite the fact that the CAP was designed to protect inefficient French farmers.

France's other big problem is falling productivity. AI says: "Since 2019, apparent labour productivity has fallen markedly in France. Defined here as the ratio of value added produced to the number of people employed, labour productivity in market sectors was 5.2% below its pre Covid level (final quarter of 2019) in the second quarter of 2023."

Other economic indicators are poor too.

https://www.lemonde.fr/en/economy/article/2025/06/19/why-the-french-economy-is-s

It should be noted that the economic situation in Germany is also pretty dire.

EU membership and high levels of low-skilled migration to try to counter low birth rates do not seem to offer a solution.

Ironic then that those imported to build a bigger more efficient work force has become the reason the it hasn't.
If anyone thinks and there's one or two on here that do , that the current illegal immigration into the UK is good for a growing economy is stupid or ignorant ,or both.
Big families from lands far far away need more welfare and government support which in turns can negate the benefits of that one individual family member who works.

Did you miss out the word DEFICIT or is it DEBT. Debt probably.

Like the rec.t Reeves rebellion France will not accept benefits cuts.

This is why our own Eluned has to go. She on one hand fought to preserve a benefits for healthy Welsh resting people of working age while at the same time welcoming immigration to fill the employment gaps.

Not good enough. This strategy creates an atmosphere of malaise and debt.

Take a look at the Western world en masse and then read a book by David Runciman caled "How Democracy Ends"

Or, read a little history, read about the fall of the Roman Empire and compoare and contrast what it's ruling classes did and what our ruling classes do today which, broadly put, is to hoard the wealth, to deny the majority its fair share and keep telling that majority (who by the way do most of the living, working and dying (yes it's paraphrasing "It's a Wonderful Life)) and maybe you will see that we are on the same road as the Romans, the road to a great fall caused by the greed and selfish stupidity of those we trut to lead us.

The nepotism, the self serving greed and sense of entitlement these people have whilst lording it over the majority is beyond belief.

Some, like the historian Peter Heather, even see a parallel in terms of uncontrolled immigration.

Well for Rome it was when they invited the Goths in, Alaric strick ablow and showed Rome was vulnerable and it got worse from there on.

For the West is it the masses heading here from Asia and Africa?

Will it just be a case, as some on here think, that the Uk will fall OR is the entire Western European democracy system under threat?

Very well put cat.

You mention hoarding the wealth. I mentioned in another thread about the family who were top of the Sunday Times Rich List last year. Over the period when we had austerity, with the Conservatives slashing all the public services 99% of the people in this country rely on and while those same people saw their income drop around 20% in real terms, from 2012 up to 2024 this family increased their wealth from £9 billion to £37 billion.

Now that is obscene. There really is something wrong with a society that allows such a disgusting disparity in wealth to build up between the haves and the have nots.

Actually the big news regarding the 2025 Times Rich List was that most of those featured were poorer than in the previous year. I started a thread about this at the time with some links. I do think social inequality is a huge problem, but in the present UK economic situation many of the rich have found it hard to increase or even maintain their wealth, at least in the last year or two.

To save myself searching again, I will just post what AI says: "The 2025 Sunday Times Rich List reveals a significant decline in the number of billionaires in the UK, with the count dropping from 165 to 156. This marks the biggest fall in the list's 37-year history. The wealth of the UK's billionaires has also decreased, with the combined wealth of those on the list standing at £772.8 billion, down 3% from the previous year. The decline in billionaires is attributed to the non-dom tax crackdown, which has led to fewer wealthy individuals moving to the UK. The list also highlights the wealth of familiar figures, including the King, who has seen his personal fortune increase by £30 million. Despite the wealth disparity, the list continues to reflect the disconnect between the ultra-wealthy and the everyday struggles of millions in the UK. "

It's been a challenging period for all with both internal and external factors.

As you say, I'm less concerned about millionires when in the same period the poverty gap was widened and the depth of the poverty gap has deepened.

I'm not praising billionaires. My point was more along the lines that very few people are doing well as present, with the subtext being that taxing the very rich at even higher levels will probably result in the flight of many to countries that hit them less hard. There will then be less than the hoped for gain for the Treasury. It is of course true that in periods of economic austerity low-paid workers are the ones who suffer most. Paradoxically the non-working poor may have a shade more protection.
