Charlie Austin on Under the Cosh on 09:42 - Sep 11 by ParkRoyalR

Two decent seasons engineered a move away which cost the club a lot of money,

Undermined team morale when staggered into Ellerslie Stand but summoned enough energy to get into the PV for after match pints,

I have no anger towards him other than one absolutely dire performance at Peterborough where he could barely muster a jog,

I just find it odd so many cannot see his no 1 priority is himself and mugging off gullible QPR fans came easy to him.

This post has been edited by an administrator

Of course his priority was himself, if he was no good at football the club would have released him so footballers absolutly should look after themselves. He didn't cost the club money, he was sold for the same price we paid for him and his goals won us a £100million premier league ticket that the club not Charlie messed up

If scoring 20 goals and winning promotion followed by 18 goals in the Prem is only decent then god knows how you judge the players who replaced him.

I feel bad re-reading some of my comments.
I thought Charlie was a great player first time around. Couldn't believe we managed to sign him and thought he was one of the most natural goal scorers we had for many years.

I loved seeing that Soccer am video of his training, I think it showed how hard he worked. As he mentioned he would play through injury, remember seeing how much strapping he used to have on his shoulder.

It never sat well with me how he left the first time. He and the club let the contract run down and Southampton got one of the best English strikers on the cheap. A similar move to Manning and others...

When he came back on loan he was great, and as everyone mentions kept us up, seemed to mentor Dykes and get a tune out of him.
Once that deal was perm he and Johanson dropped off a cliff.

I never linked this with money before, but after listening to that maybe it was?
Anyway, I'm sad he didn't like Les. I'd hoped there would be some bond there, where Les might impart wisdom into other players, especially #9's who he should understand the most. I thought that assuming he was retired was perfectly fair, but I wasn't in the room so I don't know how it was discussed.

Anyway, good luck Charlie, loved that little interview with Kone. Its a shame that you didn't get the same from Les, who also had a similar journey and could have given a younger Charlie similar advice.

Les also played a season too many (didn't he finish at Bolton?) ;D

Yeah that loan spell Austin played a major role in turning things around for us, he was excellent. We'd have comfortably gone down without him signing imo

He was poor by his standards the following season but still scored goals for us

+ switching to a back 3 from Norwich onwards in the last game of the calendar year. i thought he was toast after the Cardiff game, but rightly lost his faith in Barbet being good enough to play in two (you can stick your bandage..for anybody who doesn't want to hear it). Drew, but should have won at high flying Norwich and never looked back with Barbet looking good in a 3 - there you go for balance!

Absolute hero.

Came in to score goals to take us up and promptly did it.
Played with half a shoulder in the play offs and scored the goals to take us to Wembley.
Unbelievable in the Prem. Got an England call up lest we forget.

He came back at a dark time for the club. We had sold Eze and were resting the whole thing working on a young Ilias Chair, an emerging Chris Willock, Lyndon Dykes and McAulley Bonne. We were awful that first half of lockdown.
His return started the best form this club has seen for a decade. His first game away at Luton he came in, scored and we won. Was perfect

When he re-signed what should've happened was he was used as a sub to bring on and lift the crowd whilst he mentored and helped others. However we had a ridiculous summer, sold nobody, bought everybody and decided we were going up so he wasn't managed properly. By January it was done really (remember him sitting in the stands after he was subbed in the cup v Rotherham).
A bad 6 months shouldn't cloud the fact he took us up, tried as best he could to keep us up and then returned to keep us up in the division below.

13/14 - 34 games 19 goals
14/15 - 35 games 18 goals
15/16 - 16 games 9 goals
20/21 - 21 games 7 goals
21/22 - 38 games 7 goals

That's some record

The loan spell went well.

But after that he coasted big time.

Was overweight and unfit. Secured his big last payday and sadly switched from an excellent professional to a man that gave up on his career noticeably.

Few comments in there, where he really took umbrage with several managers in his career. And playing more for the team, when there were bonusses on offer in that spell too, suggested he had changed from the young lad who was so keen to do well, to the old pro who did the bare minimum and if anyone dared to criticise him, he sulked and went off the rails a bit and hit the booze.

Sad end to his career....

And tbh the comment from Les about him retiring, was perfectly just. He clearly lost his mojo for the game. Came across as a prickly character in this interview and did say if he struggled in the game, would start hitting the alcohol a lot, which clearly was happening in the second season of his return.

Think gets a lot of kindness and leniency over much because his two seasons in his first spell were outstanding.

A shame for me.

As we seen with many, sometimes never go back.

They say never meet your heroes and sadly this particular pod for me, Charlie doesn't come across as the legend he originally was.

I disagree about Austin coasting and being unfit after the loan spell. I don't think a lot changed during that pre season to make him unfit and certainly his early appearances in that season he looked very similar in size and fitness and he did during the loan spell. You have clearly ignored my comments about the difference in the team selection and formation that formed the good spell Austin and Dykes had developed.

Warburton was at fault with the above and yes, Austin's attitude may have changed as a result of often being stuck on the bench and playing as a lone striker in a formation that never suited him.

We have to be careful about this, Nick.

This is what Austin says. We have no way of knowing for sure.

But, and I mean this as a general comment, one person saying something on a podcast does not make it a fact. Austin may well have misremembered, misinterpreted, misunderstood, or just made it up.

For his part, Ferdinand may say that he did offer advice, that he did try and help, that he could not reach Austin, that he did not want to over-step the manager etc etc.

Or he may just say that dirty linen should not be washed in public.

But, as far as I know, he has not spoken about this in public.

We have absolutely no way of knowing.

It’s well established that Ferdinand helped strikers.

Matt Smith on the very same podcast said so.

Austin himself in the last podcast admitted he was a difficult character and forced a move and played up under Hasselbaink.

Maybe that’s why it might not have worked with Les.

A manager would not change a formation if he felt it wasnt going to work with the players at his disposal.

Austin getting the hump about it and not putting in as much effort to me was clear at that point, but lets agree to disagree. He was a professional football player and a good pro, tries to act out what the coach wants. Its an eleven man game and tactics have to be adhered to, by each player, for a managers ideas to work.

As said.cant fault the great man for his first spell, but sadly could not ever replicate that after, wherever he was again, whatever the reasons behind it.

Keep smiling.

C'mon you Rrrs.

Got an inkling Kone could be our next top striker. Its been a while !!!
Gone and jinxed it now.

Absolute legend as a number 9 and scored some brilliant goals for us, with an even better record. Probably our best centre forward since Sir Les.

One thing I must say is I watched his ‘warm up’ in the Sunderland League cup game (shoot the lino) and I have never seen a worse array of finishing. Literally every shot he took was high, wide and not very handsome. Couldn’t believe what I was seeing, admittedly he was long past his best at this point, but it was an absolute disgrace.

When Austin left he did a few QPR podcasts and said the same thing about what les said, would be surprised if it isn't true and to be honest Les was well within his rights to ask that question and may not have meant it as the insult that Charlie took it as

Fair enough, Dave,

Would be nice to leave It at that now, there ain't a single sod on the planet who's perfect, I'll remember Charlie with fondness and the goals he scored for us not what allegedly went on behind the scenes and not what people think about him coming back overweight or not as the case might be.
He's a legend around Hungerford/Kintbury local boy made good, to the best of my knowledge his old Mans brickwork Company are still going.
Charlie Austin played for Kintbury Rangers, his local non-league side, as a teenager.

Local Boy ''makes good'' that'll do for me.

My Father had a profound influence on me, he was a lunatic.

I listened to the whole interview and didn’t have a problem with it.

He said many times “QPR was his club”, he’s clearly a bloke who makes his mind up on people and isn’t afraid to knock people he doesn’t like, he laid into Sir Les but that’s a relationship for them to sort out, and I got the feeling he would have been someone you wanted in your team 100%.

As so many have said he’s also the best striker we’ve had since Les himself.

18 goals in the Prem in that appalling side he was playing in was some achievement.

100%

for what its worth, even if Les was an appointment to appease fans and didn't know what he was doing he ended up with a pretty tough job!

That dressing room was known to be toxic, players contracts all over the place.

Footballers on mega contracts happy to play in the reserves.

This did all get sorted out from what I could see on the outside.

I am saying the publicising of this was very timely,

Similar to Gregg Wallace's recent autism diagnosis,

If you have skeletons in the closet and you're wanting to maintain or get a career on the media its very convenient & helpful to be able to pin poor behaviour on something that elicits sympathy,

Similar to the...'It's not the person I am today'...get out of jail card.

Really genuine decent people like Jamie Mackie come across as they are on TV, can't see Austins fledgling media career lasting as he's the opposite to Mackie.

i mean, this is actually pretty ridiculous

thats the kind of thing you might do if youre trying to have jobs with good morning britain or great british bake off or some kind of show where you have a very broad audience and need someone who is squeaky clean

do you rly think the listeners to talk sport care about this personal life?
