His attitude to QPR is a very welcome change to the last Undr The Cosh one he did.

Very shocked to hear that all the players got weighed in under Warburton, it seems like bonuses drove that great finish to the season.

Reinforces my belief that a lot of players are only interested in days off and money

I might be wrong but think that was something ferdinand brought in, lower basic wage and bigger bonuses for wins, appearances etc
I think they still do something similar now

They tried that with Onuoha and he saw it as a massive insult

The pod is a good listen though and I did find it quite funny how upset he was about what Les said to him about retiring and then he basically went into semi retirement straight away

Yeh it was very bonus related. Not sure if it's still the same.

That was the source of mine and Warb's on air bust up, he pointed out that the players were on a bonus structure for set pieces scored and conceded and I joked that some of their overdrafts must look like mine in that case.

Didn't go down well. That was in a disrespectful way.

Yeah, it was probably a fair shout. Charlie mk2 looked semi retired, as he and Johanson saw out the last few months of their contracts. Same with Nedum, who was outraged by the offer from QPR, then had to drop to Canada to beat it

To be honest, most of Austins second stint at QPR was dreadful

Was totally unfit most of the time and took us for a ride.

Got away with taking the mick out of the club and was never fit and overweight too.

Wasnt old so just showed his efforts for professional football had past.

The fact he often says he loves the club. Yes we loved his first spell but he should never have come back as he didnt act in a professional manner and took us for a ride and got paid way more than he deserved.

Might be controversial and disliked opinion but he deteriorated as a player very quickly.

Never seen this said on here and surprised its not been said. Perhaps seen as evil to say of a previous hero but he had given up being a professional footballer way before his time. Never achieved what he could have done.

Was a strange situation also with his move to Australia. Cant see that went well either apart from another injection of cash.

We’d have gone very close to being relegated in that lockdown season if him, De Wijs, Johansen and Field hadn’t been signed.

I remember us scraping a 1-1 at Wycombe just before Christmas and thinking we were toast. Bonne and Dykes as the forwards. Tom Carroll the best midfielder.

Yeah that loan spell Austin played a major role in turning things around for us, he was excellent. We'd have comfortably gone down without him signing imo

He was poor by his standards the following season but still scored goals for us

I agree the club looked destined for relegation until that quartet joined on loan.

I also disagree with comments by others that he was taking the club for a ride when he rejoined. When he played during this loan spell he was often playing alongside Dykes and between them they formed a good partnership scoring and assisting each other. However, after he joined on a permanent deal in the summer Warburton decided to play just one up front and promoted Willock into the side. Clearly this did not suit Austin's style of play nor did it suit Dykes who scored 3 goals less that season.

The loan spell went well.

But after that he coasted big time.

Was overweight and unfit. Secured his big last payday and sadly switched from an excellent professional to a man that gave up on his career noticeably.

Few comments in there, where he really took umbrage with several managers in his career. And playing more for the team, when there were bonusses on offer in that spell too, suggested he had changed from the young lad who was so keen to do well, to the old pro who did the bare minimum and if anyone dared to criticise him, he sulked and went off the rails a bit and hit the booze.

Sad end to his career....

And tbh the comment from Les about him retiring, was perfectly just. He clearly lost his mojo for the game. Came across as a prickly character in this interview and did say if he struggled in the game, would start hitting the alcohol a lot, which clearly was happening in the second season of his return.

Think gets a lot of kindness and leniency over much because his two seasons in his first spell were outstanding.

A shame for me.

As we seen with many, sometimes never go back.

They say never meet your heroes and sadly this particular pod for me, Charlie doesn't come across as the legend he originally was.

The drop off was incredible & even when coming down under to play for Brisbane in A League he looked completely shot. He should’ve torn the league apart but barely broke a sweat.

Isn't it possible that age and his body caught up with him? Can't remember a more clear example of seeing a player whose legs had "gone" as in that cup tie at Peterboro when he started.

Now, maybe if he had lived like a saint and trained like Ronaldo it wouldn't have happened, but I find it hard to think ill of Charlie considering he got us to the Premier League, did brilliantly in the PL, had a quality loan spell back with us.

In an era when Holloway, Bircham and Ainsworth are called legends, I will always put Charlie above them, class act.

I think thats a bit unfair on him.

was a number of factors that season, he lost his Grandad who he was very close to and as you can tell from the inter view in hard times he turns to the booze and that all seemed to catch up with him that season as well as a coupole of injuries.

We also very rarely played to his strengths and played him as a lone striker which he wasn't very good at when he was young.

Despite all that we haven't got close to having a season as good as that since he left

I've never warmed to Austin. Too much social media, too many radio gigs. Making money out of breaking dressing room secrets.

He was dreadfully out of shape and out of form by the end of his spell with us, and sitting in the stand that time was terrible behaviour.

If it turns out he has/had a drink problem, though, I feel really sorry for him. Whether it's him, Steven Caulker, Clarke Carlisle or Ray Wilkins, anyone with an addiction has my deepest sympathy.

To be honest I think everyone is missing the fact that he’s been diagnosed with ADHD and can not play in the pro game anymore due to the drugs not being signed off by UKAD it affected him more then anyone thinks

Poll: Now it’s slightly clearer cut who do you want as manager ?

ADHD diagnosis was very convenient,

Coincided with trying to build a post playing career in the media,

Cynics might suggest his Agent / PR Advisors recommended a timely diagnosis as would sanitize a number of previous transgressions in his past which could prohibit building a new career in the media,

Agree with much of this other than saying you put Charlie Austin is above Ian Holloway in legend status....really? Why?

As a player Holloway (a significantly less gifted player) played more games for QPR at a higher level in a much more successful team than Austin, albeit in a far less glamorous role.

Then his work in his initial five year period as a manager alone should alone afford him higher status than Charlie Austin, a great goalscorer but who only contributed three seasons of good work for QPR. And he didn't sign a new deal, thus forcing through a cheaper January deal. Real legends like Eze sign renewals.

Austin: a great number 9, but well below Ferdinand, Givens, Allen, Bannister in the role in my time watching QPR. On a par with Furlong, maybe, for his contribution to QPR (as a player, not a man/coach).

Sorry, I didn't write that very well. What I meant was that if people who produced for us at League One level (don't agree that Holloway performed for us at Premier League level, in my view he was an abysmal footballer on the outskirts of an excellent team) are bandied about as legends, then so should Austin be.

Totally agree with your legends in your QPR lifetime. I started in 1980ish so mine are Clive Allen, Bannister (obvs), Fenwick, Ferdinand (Les ha ha), Macca, Wilkins and then possibly only Austin anywhere else near that list. Common denominator = top flight.

I would allow Charlie Austin QPR hero status, he's the best all round striker I've seen playing for the club in my era, probably just ahead of Paul Furlong and Kevin Gallen (first game 1996 so never saw Les).

These podcasts are always a way for players with axes to grind to get it out. I remember Rowan Vine's and Leon Knight's which were both car crashes of podcasts.

I guess it's just a difference of opinions, but if playing at the top level is your criteria then , yes, Charlie Austin did play one season at the top level for QPR and did score 18 goals - but QPR came bottom of the league! I'd place it as the most miserable season I've experienced as QPR supporter other than the season we went to Div 2, with which is on a par.

Those other guys you mention since 1980, agree. Definite legends. But I'd put nearly any of their regular team mates from those years - Parker, Bardsley, Wilson, Byrne, Sinton, Sinclair, Impey, Wegerle etc - above Charlie Austin's one season in the top flight for legend status. He gave us two good seasons, one we got promoted, one we got relegated.

I just don't see him anywhere near that list.

Chaz played well for us during an awful period, but finished on a low.

His legendary status is tainted by the state of the club. I'm inclined to think his loan spell was his most important contribution.

Podcast was good listen, interesting career.
