No mate, it's a bit of a no-no to send your list of questions over in advance of an interview.

I had a discussion with Paul about potential talking points, but post Cov they were pretty obvious to anybody who's been reading the site.

That's good to hear. Makes his answers more genuinely his own I think.

Excellent interview.

As ever, I liked Stephán's answers. I think there's a good chance that he's toeing the party line in his answers re Plymouth, the game model and fitness, but - if he is - then it's because it's the right thing to do. There has to be unity, even if there is internal disagreement.

Well done Clive and the LFW crew. A hard job done well.

So, on Walsh, I did have it on my list but I pulled it because he's a 24 year old lad obviously having a bit of an awkward time. Is it right to sit there talking about individual players in person in that situation? I'm sure JS would have dealt with it professionally but it would have put him in an awkward spot. I decided it was better to ask the more general 'how much flexibility do you have within the game model' question instead.

There were a few considerations like that around putting this one together...

- Time. We'd previously get an hour, which is a long time and is unusual to get that sort of access, this one was limited to 30 mins so there's probably some follow up questions or pushbacks that I left hanging to make sure I covered what I wanted to cover. My 'rule of the stairs' question I do wish I'd asked is whether the transfer plans had changed after Cov - particularly the Hayden signing. There's always one I kick myself for afterwards, and this time it's that one.

- It's his second language. As others have said you can see quickly his English is improving, but it does add a different dynamic compared to speaking with Ainsworth/Beale/Warbs.

- The reaction of not only JS but also the grief online that Dave Mc got for asking a 'who picks the team' question last week. I thought that was absolutely a perfectly fair and legitimate question from Dave, but JS wasn't a fan clearly so you don't want to antagonise him you want him to engage and open up, and the online mob absolutely set on Dave for asking it. I've had my fill of that over the past month or so. So we had to give some thought to how you basically ask that same question in a more conciliatory, perhaps less abrupt way. I think we did that.

- The relationship between this site and the club obviously hasn't been terrific for the last year or so, that's been pretty obvious I'm sure, we're trying to build some bridges and work out how that relationship is going to work moving forwards. I could have gone in there really abrasive, confrontational, but is that going to help me, help the club? Probably not.

Thanks Clive.

It’s really helpful to have that insight into your questions and strategy for the interview.

When I read the word, 'project' three times in the first answer, I didn't think I had the stomach to get to the end. But I'm glad I did!

Maybe the answer is to get tonked 7-1 every other league game and follow up with a win in the next. 69 points come May; would have got you in the POs last season!

Thanks Clive, it’s really good news that the management appear to have recognised the value of being more open with LFW.

JS generally comes across well. One part where he was struggling was in trying to answer the question re team selection for Plymouth. Despite twice stating that it was his decision, he couldn’t help but then refer to ‘we decided’ a few times afterwards. A less than convincing reply.

Agreed that JS comes across well, I think he obviously has good experience with younger players and how to foster a good team mentality throughout the club.

I thought his answer on fitness was a good example of that, I would have said Charlton goals were an example of good substitutions and I imagine he would have been well within his rights to say that but instead suggested it was about fitness

Nice interview, and JS comes across very well. Clear answers and not too much BS. I liked his answer about the Coventry result, which was very calm and reasonably.
He comes across as the sort of manager you would want to play for. I can't imagine he is a hair dryer type, more arm around the shoulder, quiet word. I can see why he has done well developing young players.

So when is the interview with CN then? You must have asked!

Well done Clive, the fact that you are worried about how you ask these questions prove that you are the right type of person to do this.

On the Hayden signing, I'm not convinced it was a reaction to the 7-1 and a change of tactics. I think it was probably linked to Colback dropping off the payroll freeing up the budget to cover him. As a like for swap it makes more sense. Almost like that old "homegrown" players rule for the CL. QPR's game model allows for three older pro's in the team (or similar).

Personally I'd still prefer three or four Kieran Morgan type signings for the same wages, as there is always a chance one of those prospects could be a great player.

Just back (from London/the car), a nicely balanced chat all round and it seemed like you nailed your questions whilst getting along.

It agree that the pauses felt genuinely thoughtful and his response particularly helpful n the game model made a lot of sense.

One thing that made me laugh…I assume he was clapping his hands together (he did this quite a lot) but I couldn’t shake the vision of him slapping you repeatedly with a leather glove he brought along for that specific purpose. Tek zat you pesky Englander.

Probably just me!

Thanks Clive, top work.

Yeah this was my first thought as well Brian. He gave some absolutely perfect party lines in the opening 10 minutes about structure and the wider management team, that I’m sure we would not have heard last year. I don’t mean that in a bad way, this is obviously a structure he is very comfortable in and has recent experience of it with some nutters in Lens which implies he’s pretty content with this comparatively (his answer about “good people” in the structure is quite telling on what it must have been like there).

Think he comes across quite well. He is probably the most head coach of head coaches we’ve had, which is what this structure is supposed to be like for better or for worse.

Yeah I think that's right, and helps me clarify my own thoughts on it to be honest!

Edit: thinking back to what Dave Mc said about how good Cifuentes was at projecting a sense of authority, and how important this was to his popularity with the supporters, you can see how his improving English is helping JS start to develop in this respect too.

Very entertaining once you got used to his intonation and his habit of cracking a whip every two minutes. Took me a while to catch up on who eeks-zhay was though.

I thought he pre-empted questions on Walsh by leading on the importance of playing young players and accepting mistakes as the price of their development, about three minutes in. Obviously he wasn’t going to name names and Clive was rightly too respectful to.

It's always good to hear from the manager in these kind of interviews and get an idea of what they are trying to do.

I like that he sounds quite adaptable and isn't fixed to only playing one way, hopefully we have a good season

The stuff he said about the "game model" was very similar to De Souza (who's name always makes me think of Kaiser Söze...), which is that we supporters have the incorrect impression that this means formation and even things like whether or not we play out from the back. JS emphasized the need for adaptation in accordance with opposition etc., which sounds all very reasonable.

But, having listened to both him and Kaiser Söze I'm still not really clear what "game model" actually refers to? JS said something like "what do you mean by game model, you have to define it", which is fine but it's as if it's something we / Clive has invented, which isn't the case, I'm pretty sure Nourry is the one who started to talk about it.

The greatest trick the devil ever pulled was convincing the world the game model didn't exist.

Great interview. Well done, Clive. Well done the club for allowing it too. Finally.

I found that REALLY encouraging. Whether something has happened behind the scenes or not, reading between the lines, I felt it was quite clear they are hugely softening the game model theory and Stephan has a lot more control over the first team. Perhaps that is just him exercising power he already had. However it felt that some of what he said was a coded message to the CEO about the need to be flexible, adapt, and have options. “‘Playing Principles’ are set…but things like playing style, shape, moves, etc, need to be flexible and adapted”, is basically saying the opposite! Otherwise what “Principles” are we talking about? It’s good news though; Stephan should be in charge of the first team and change the tactics, shape, style, etc. He should know more about those things than anyone else at the club. That is what he is employed for. This is a good change in approach from the club. Some common sense employed.

It’s clear he believes the game is getting more direct and physical. Encouraging he believes this because I think it is too, and this will mean we are better prepared for that change in approach from oppositions. Very happy to hear we will continue with a more direct style in the main. I also loved his focus on “duels”. He is completely right. You cannot win football matches unless you win your fair share of duels. Again, possibly a coded message.

Didn’t buy/agree with him on the fitness. You can explain Charlton away on this point as it was 3-4 players without a pre season for QPR who won it for us! Remarkable coincidence. But like one or two areas I think he was toeing the line there, which is understandable.

Overall, thought he came across very well. I like him.

Many positives to take away, but still no definition of what this darned 'project' is - if the answer to that is 'buy young, sell on, stay where we are', then, as Clive tactfully put it, that's a hard sell to the supporters.
