Landed at Lukla once in Nepal. Didn't find out until years later that its the most dangerous airport landing in the world!

Although I thought takeoff was more scary, as its like being in a lift with the cable cut

I was on an internal flight from Nha Trang to HCMC in 1997. The flight attendant walked down the aisle handing out little boxes. I was the only westerner and not one local opened their box.

Thinking I might one day be asked on a QPR forum about this, I pluck up the courage, tear the tape off and open the box, to reveal a 'triangle' of God knows what inside. Before I could do any damage, the passengers across the aisle and beside me shake their heads, the latter actually put his hand over the box!

A few minutes later the attendant walks back up the plane with a load of unopened boxes and shoots me this venomous look when she sees that I had torn the tape off mine and opened the box.

I was also on a flight from Perth to Jo'burg when a fight broke out between two big old units by the doors a couple of hours in. Scared the bejaysus out of everyone, because you just don't know at 38,000 feet! Captain had to intervene and if memory serves, he threatened to turn the flight around. Every time one or other got up, there was a collective intake of breath until they sat down; coppers were at Jo'burg when we landed.

Emirates, landing at Hong Kong during a storm. There was a screen showing the images from the forward camera. Screen was blank, plane was bouncing around all over the place. Suddenly the runway lights appeared-really close. Plane then lands with a tremendous thud. The runway lights swing to the right, then to the left. Reverse thrust like nothing I have ever heard before. Half the passengers throwing up. That was possibly the scariest 20 seconds of my life.

Sat next to this dude on a flight who had a long bag slumped in the empty seat next to him.

Got chatting but it got awkward when I asked him what was in the bag and he said 'none of your fcking business'.

When he got up I took a peek inside though.

Biman Bangladesh Airlines an aged 737 coming into land at Nepal airport, we hit a tropical storm on the way In, on the first attempt to land we were battered relentlessly by the wind and rain, we were about 100 feet above what looked like the runway, the pilot opened up the throttle and went straight back up, second attempt was even worse as the wheels actually touched down with a bloody loud bang, we bounced up and the pilot once again opened up the throttles and once more we went straight up again, this time though kids were screaming and the stink of vomit circulated the cabin. I was right at the front two seats as the only White bloke on the plane, I said to the the bloke next to me (hoping he spoke English (WTF Is going on?) he spoke perfect English and told me he lived In Kathmandu as a Nepalese businessman a frequent flyer but had never experienced anything like this before.
After getting up In the air again the Pilot eventually spent Two minutes explaining what he was gonna do next, the bloke next to me translated for me that the Idiot was gonna try and land the plane again.
Add landing attempt One and Two together and that was the result of his third attempt at landing.
We flew back up In the air again turned left and flew back to Bangladesh, there are two seats at the front of the plane where the stewardesses sit, both those Girls were terrified.

I'd already seen Mount Everest with the sun rising behind It from my journey from Kuwait to Bangladesh but I wanted to go to the Everest base camp, which I never got round to actually doing.

Had a couple of ropey attempts landing in Cusco, Peru. Was almost like they were waiting for the airport to appear above the clouds its so high there. Didn't make it the first time after one hell of a bang on landing, pilot said nothing as we bounced around for at least 10 agonising minutes before stating (in Spanish) that we were almost ready to do it all over again. Never been so pleased to be on the ground in one piece.

If you're ever in Indonesia, the local airlines are an experience. Flew with a company called Lion Air on a couple of legs and their planes make their near namesake Ryanair feel like business class luxury. The leg room was Loftus Road standard and the condition of the planes was awful. Might as well just have the words 'As seen on Air Crash Investigation' on the inflight magazine, because they certainly have been

Yup, much the same experience - plane struck by lightning coming into Chicago with much the same effect. Horrible combo of screams and vomit, the crunch as we (literally) hit the runway gave all the bones in my body a truly terrifying rattle.
Mind you, still less bad an experience than Wembley in 86, which I've never recovered from.

Chicago airport Is bloody huge, I landed there on my way to Memphis (connecting flight) It took me nigh on 45 minutes to to walk to the Memphis departure gate. (as per usual In the States the Memphis flight was overbooked and at the departure gate there was utter chaos).

Flying into Munich in 1990. Lufthansa 737 so a small plane, on the approach and still several hundred feet in the air I said to my work colleague, “blimey the runways down there” don’t know whether the pilot had misjudged it but suddenly he dropped, the plane bounced twice, loads of the over head lockers flew open, we had honestly thought we had crashed!

On the others end of the spectrum, last month I flew from Norwich airport to Amsterdam With KLM, took off, seat belt sign went off, got a complimentary snack and a bottle of water, seat belt sign went back on and we landed exactly 30 minutes after taking off.
On the way home we landed at 13:30 and was back to my car at 13:40
Flying from Norwich is great, only 4 flights a day, last year I went to Rhodes for a week followed by 10 days in menorca, we got off our plane on the Wednesday and got back on exactly the same plane with the same cabin crew on the Saturday!
Shame they don’t fly to Germany as it would save me major ballsache getting to Stansted.

Internal prop flight from Havana to Isla Juventud. It was only aboout 30-40 mins, but the russian built plane was falling apart, open gaps around the windows when we boarded and hit major turbulence. I had a few mojitos that night.

Was that at the old airport or the new one?

The former was a scary landing at the best of times!

They ask for a € 10 Euro “development “ fee at the departure gate at Knock airport .
I’ve flown out of there 100 times in the last 30 years. I’ve paid for a lot of development.

It was the inflight meal, Nicholas.

No idea if it was animal, vegetable or mineral. Probably bit of an old tyre left over from the American War, which they are still serving up.

Spent too much of my working life traveling on planes. Two very memorable moments:

1. Heathrow to Boston - Feb 2003. Enormous snowstorm and two very difficult attempts at landing. I couldn’t see outside due to the volume of snow. Bumped into the crew in customs and the BA Captain said it was the most challenging weather he had ever landed in his many years of flying.

2. London - Cork - Jan 2013. Insane winds literally throwing the aircraft from side to side. I honestly thought my time was up. The Aer Lingus crew made it on the second attempt.

Couldn’t agree more Ted. It was tongue in cheek and worth every penny when you consider I live 17 miles away in Roscommon.
As the great Christy Moore said . They’ll never be a miracle like the airport down at Knock .
I remember the train to Holyhead then the ferry and then the train from Dublin. A days journey back then . My brother and I did it for that “Milk cup final “ . Brutal journey. Brutal result.
Great facilities there now.

What on earth happened in 86 to leave such a bad impression on you?
Only bad things for me was being on the first flight after the Manchester plane fire in 85 on the same type of plane and recently coming into land in fog at Milan, took two goes.

Can't believe I forgot my Air Amazonia out of the Bolivian jungle back to La Paz in 2002.

Over the Andes on a plane that I've sat around bigger dinner tables. I had a panic attack, needed oxygen duringbthe flight, and my screams from the back to 'land this f....r', caused two Japanese passengers to start crying.

All prompted by seeing ice on the windows inside the plane and the co-pilot scraping ice from the pilot's window with an ATM card.
