Gavin Bazunu - some praise 10:19 - Sep 16 with 3910 viewsPatfromPoole

I think he has been pretty good this season.

Don't think he could have done much with the goals conceded this season with the possible exception of Stoke.

Have seen some footage which shows he may have saved the shot which hit the bar on Sunday; if he did get his hand to it (it doesn't appear very clear) it was an incredible save.

I have not been his biggest advocate over the years, but as with Manning (who has also impressed this season), I am willing to hold my hands up and admit when players play well.

Long may it continue.

Same here.

He's been pretty solid this season .
He won us the Wrexham game .

I was surprised alot of fans blamed him for the Watford goals which was ridiculous imo.

It's almost like some fans are desperate for him and certain other players to make mistakes to reinforce their opinion..always found it that so strange.

Yes, but 5 games is too small a sample to tell. Keepers, unlike say strikers, need to be consistently reliable, day in day out over the season. For them, the most important thing is not making mistakes, rather than having moments of brilliance. There are good reasons why many fans lost confidence in him. One mistake could see those doubts resurface.

He's still young and learning. Let's hope he continues to improve and give people confidence in him.

I have been impressed with how he has commanded the penalty area.

I think there were a number of times on Sunday when he came off his line well and helped the back four out.

Compare with the hari kari on Sunday when their keeper needlessly came off his line and got himself injured. Mousinho was being a dick in blaming Fellows for that.

If Bazunu can keep it up, it will go a long way to getting us to where we need to be.

Right in front of me Pat and it didn’t look to me as though he got a hand on it.

Mate of mine thought it may have taken a very slight deflection.

Didn’t the ref also give a goal kick ?

Must admit I completely agree. I was fully for replacing him but he’s impressed me thus far.

The ref did give a goal kick, but he would have needed to have had amazing eyesight to have seen a save by Bazunu.

Which to be fair, this was something the ref spent the rest of the game showing he absolutely did not have.

He can make impressive saves.

It's those: "I wonder if the keeper could have done a bit better?" type goals that have always been the problem.

If he can cut those out them, yes, happy days.

(P.S. I am sure there are stats on all this stuff, expected this or that, but I don't understand any of those).

After these initial 5 games it appears the more beleaguered and forgotten members of the squad have turn't up, Bazunu, Manning, Stephens and Fraser, just need the rest of them to find some form now?

He is definitely improving, but apart from his heroics at the other end v Preston, has done little to fill the fans with confidence.

He produced a great save v Wrexham, that ultimately helped us win the game, but he was a little suspect position wise for both goals v Watford and Stoke.

Would have preferred it if we had got the Stoke 'keeper in during the window, instead of the Norwich reserve, so he could at least challenge Baz for the first team starting berth.

I was gonna comment, but based on harmony in the camp and keeping some of our new posters happy my lips shall stay zipped for a minute…..

Ready and waiting to mop up those European places......

I don’t rate the bloke, but he was strong on balls in the box on Sunday.

This didn't age well!!...oh well ...McCarthy please Mr Still.

Even Alfie House who's generally quite neutral said on Total Saints Podcast that McCarthy is the best keeper at the club and must start the next game...

For those calling for McCarthy then I predict McCarthy will get vilified for letting in shots at his near post - a weakness that should be known to every Championship striker! We probably needed a new keeper in the window - but suspect keepers rarely offer opportunity to double the ownerships investment in a 12/18 month timeframe so investment made on outfield players as they chase the buy low/sell high model.

I agree. McCarthy is a terrible goalkeeper. We should have got rid of him years ago.

The squad has been reduced to the dross left behind and the inferior players brought in after all the good players have been sold.

Poll: Les Reed in or out?

I'm not just saying this as I started this thread.

However......

I would allocate far more blame to Roerslev than Bazunu for their first goal on Saturday.

He made absolutely no attempt to stop their guy getting a header in.

I appreciate he wasn't as tall as the other guy, who was running on to the ball. However, a good defender will be cunning and stick an arm on the body of the opponent to make it a lot more awkward for them to attack the ball.

We spent about £5 million on Roerslev apparently, and in the last two games he has looked nowhere near worth that. He was terrible against Portsmouth, and little better on Saturday.

Also, people are saying Bazunu should catch the header. Really??!!???

Watching it back Baz pushes the header straight into the feet of their attacker , it doesn't look good.

Id also bin off 3 of the back 4 plus Bazunu for the Liverpool and then possibly Middlesborough game.

Manning was adequate and perhaps deserves to keep his place but Still needs to give the CBs and Jelert a chance.

A Peterborough fan wrote on Saints Web that we really need to give Edwards 5 games and we'll see the best of him...maybe him and Wood ??

There were 4 shots on target for him to save all game
The 1st he saved but that save turned into an assist for their attacker who...
Slotted home with their 2nd
The 3rd and 4th also ended up in the back of the net

It's a real shame that we couldn't convince our Newcastle bench warming England International Goalkeeper to represent us in the Championship this season !! (Or bought the Stoke 'Keeper).

I didn’t comment on this thread before but thought Pat had got a bit over excited with some very average form and this weekend we saw just how bad Bazanu is, utter sh!t.
