Can we get excited about this team and our squad depth too 18:59 - Sep 20 with 2384 viewsnumptydumpty

Been hesitant to put the kybosh on things. But is it time to say this team, this squad and this season ahead excites me. Didn't want to over play this as bit superstitious that saying so will end up creating ultimate doom and gloom..

Blame me if we now go on a six game losing streak and lose ten players to long term injuries.

Nearly all positions seem to be covered and with decent players in reserve too. The squad seems to be as strong as i have seen for perhaps over a decade ago.

Look at our bench today

Cook Field Hayden Morgan Dembele Smyth Kolli Frey

Thats practically our first team last seaaon and with Chair Poku and JCS coming back soon also.

I have to say its a heck of a squad for ourselves

With a new manager also, Julien Stephan who we do not know much about as yet, but as we may have seen now , he is his own man and it seems he has got his own way with the change of formation suiting the players we have.

It is.one game at a time and today i was more impressed with our battling qualities. It was a tense affair but the.sort of game a good team manages to get the win over the line.

Hopeful is the word i would use at the moment.

Fingers firmly crossed, for sure..

well said....and at the moment, in the moment, i 100 % agree with everything you say.

that bench would have all been first teamers last season.

onwards and upwards.

Poll: how many games this season....home/away.

One thing I really liked is the subs desperate to get on the pitch: Paul Smyth was practically doing the salsa on the side of the pitch to get noticed. And the non-playing subs seem v supportive at full-time. He seems to have got a good team(squad) spirit going.

We do seem to have a much better balance in the squad than we've had for some time.

Also want to give a bit of praise to Norrington-Davies. I know he's not as noticeable as Kone or Burrell but he's quietly been doing an effective job. Can't remember a LB for a long time who's actually stopped crosses coming over plus he wins the ball back a decent amount. Pleased for him after his rotten time with injury.

Great post Nump. I had similar thoughts on Saturday.

One huge difference about this season to any others that I can remember is the fact that JS has options, especially from an attacking POV. As you say, Chair, Saito, Dembele, Kone, Poku, Burrell, Frey, Smyth, Kolli, Vale all essentially vying for 4 positions. In the past we've basically hung off of Chair and Willock to be our attacking outlet(s) and when they haven't done well or been available we've defaulted to offering basically nothing. These days, JS can pick horses for specific opposition courses, he can make changes between Saturdays and Tuesdays to keep the first XI fresh and hopefully we'll also be able to cope with a few injuries without imploding too.

That alone might well be the difference between our last three seasons and mid-table. If some of these lads carry on improving I can see a route to it being even bloody better than that. It's been a long time since I've been able to say things like that either to myself or out loud.

If you want to look really hard for negatives... I think it comes at full back depth, where we have the exact opposite problem. I worry how well we'll be able to cope when RND and / or JD aren't available.

I've been wildly critical of all things CN over the years but right now the trajectory of our fortunes is only going in a direction of serving humble pie. The new coach is even getting a tune out of Madsen FFS. It's like a fever dream.

Why not.

To add. I wonder out of that bench on Sat will miss out if all are fit?
At a guess it sadly could be Kolli and Morgan for Chair and Poku. Maybe Frey.
JCS would come in for Cook?

Going into the summer they had a massive job on their hands to not only keep players but add some quality and you have to say they've had the best summer window at Loftus Road probably since that first year under Warburton where he really freshended it all up. We've got good depth now, realy quality in forward areas, hats off to everyone involved and lets hope this doesn't become a one off and we can continue doing this going forward

I don't think we should get too carried away. The squad is a lot stronger than recent times and we have a real threat up front.
The league, ATM, does not seem as strong as last year. Ipswich and Southampton certainly haven't made the starts most of us expected. Neither have Birmingham and Wrexham been as solid as we feared.
However, while we should improve on last year's finish, I think we're a top 10 side rather than solid play off contenders.
Saying that, if results go to form, we could well be top 4 after the next 2 games.

I agree. Don't want to get carried away. Anything can happen. But certainly nice to see some home wins and a few goals after the previous two seasons.

I thoiught there'd be more teams running away with it given the parachute teams and Wrexham and Birmingham's big-spending extravaganza.

Just took a look at the odds and they seem all over the place and not really up to date - Ipswich are still favourites for the title with Boro back at 11/2 and we're still 6th favourite to go down.

All looks wide open to me, must be the first time in years that only one of the relegated teams is in the top 6 after six games.

Poll: QPR to finish 7th or Brentford to drop out of the top 6?

Also add in the likes of sutton who scored at the weekend. That lad will be attracting interest before we know it too.
