Lewis Moody - Englands Rugby Star diagnosed with Motor Neurone Disease 18:01 - Oct 6 with 1403 views | numptydumpty | Sadly Lewis Moody, another top rugby legend to have been diagnosed with this horrible debilitating condtion. Doddie Weir and Rob Burrows in recent years. Only 47. Sometimes life is extremely cruel and unfair. All memories of him from his team mates, coaches and media people all have him down as an incredibly dedicated and all round decent human being. Will be a tough period of time for him and his family. Hope he is afforded the dignity he deserves. [Post edited 6 Oct 18:02]

Lewis Moody - Englands Rugby Star diagnosed with Motor Neurone Disease on 22:59 - Oct 6 with 1178 views | MrSheen | I think I read a few years ago that he had become incontinent, probably because of the battering he’s taken. Although head injuries are obviously taken more seriously than they used to be, I wouldn’t be confident that the risk can be removed and watching top level rugby is something of a guilty pleasure. Having played a bit too, I can’t imagine players ever living without some danger.

Interestingly they aren't suggesting only a link with head injuries and MND. Another theory is the damage done to nerves in susceptible people from the lack of oxygen to the neurons due to extreme physical exertion. I'm not sure if that's the primary/only theory but it's new to me in the (BBC?) article I read on Moody.
Lewis Moody - Englands Rugby Star diagnosed with Motor Neurone Disease on 03:53 - Oct 7 with 998 views | PlanetHonneywood | Prior to the 2003 RWC, England played Oz in the final game of their summer tour down under. Josh Lewsey legitimately tackled some Aussie toward the end of the game and absolutely poleaxed him to such an extent, that I think the Aussie was out for months. A report I read basically said the Aussie's injuries were consistent with being hit by a car. Since rugby turned pro, players have become faster at a time their weight has increased not due to flab, but muscle. The force they generate must be huge to what players in the amateur days could generate. Bigger impacts which they must be regularly subjected to since playing high level as boys. The human body cannot sustain that for 15-20 years and there not be higher risks of injuries down the line.

Well yes but the rules have become much tighter on what is an acceptable tackle now, aiming to protect the head an neck, and punishing players a lot more frequently for not doing it within the rules. Head contact is now a red card as Sam Caine found out in the last RWC. As ever the changes in rules takes a time, for players to adjust, but Rugby is safer now then it was just 10 years ago let along 2003. I'd expect Rugby to be a lot cleaner in another 10 years as players are coached from when they start full contact, what is an illegal tackle.
Lewis Moody - Englands Rugby Star diagnosed with Motor Neurone Disease on 10:40 - Oct 7 with 798 views | Bluce_Ree | Man, MND that's the c*nt of all the diseases. 47... eesh. I watched that film about Stephen Hawking - The Theory of Everything. I know it's a dramatisation and whatever but when you see the progression of the disease and the things it starts taking away from him, like the first time he can't make it up the stairs, it's just terrifying. For me I'd be stashing as many drugs as possible and trying to time it so that when I get close to the point where I can't make the decision myself, I'd be swallowing them all. But that's a luxury he's not got if he's got kids. It's just so very sad.

Lewis Moody - Englands Rugby Star diagnosed with Motor Neurone Disease on 10:41 - Oct 7 with 803 views | Wilkinswatercarrier | Unfortunately, his tackling style was completely wrong. He would charge head first into rucks, but also tackle with his head in front of the players legs when it should be behind. He was concussed several times because of this yet played on. The crowd and commentators at the time loved it, but thankfully, rule changes mean much better player protection.

Lewis Moody - Englands Rugby Star diagnosed with Motor Neurone Disease on 13:47 - Oct 7 with 682 views | SimonJames | Despite the fact that I played rugby for over 30 years, I'm not convinced that there is a casual link between rugby and MND. About 2000 people per year are diagnosed with it (57% male), but only high profile players (and other celebrities) are reported in the press.

Lewis Moody - Englands Rugby Star diagnosed with Motor Neurone Disease on 13:54 - Oct 7 with 665 views | KensalT | MND (or ALS) seems to be a growing problem for former sports professionals. In Italy retired footballers have an incidence of ALS six times the national average. And the condition is starting in the mid-forties for former footballers as opposed to mid-sixties for the general population. There has been a lot of speculation around what is behind this with questions around doping practices of the Italian clubs. The clubs obviously didn't like accusations of doping and came up with the fertiliser used on pitches as an alternative explanation. But so far no clear cause has been established: https://www.theguardian.com/football/2008/oct/08/europeanfootball.serieafootball

They were both so brave in that interview to share this sad news. They were doing their best to sound positive, but I saw sadness and pain on their faces too. It is such a cruel and devastating illness. I hope they can find a cure or at least treatment to slow the progression.

The problem is you cannot swallow once that fcuking disease takes hold you are basically helpless/powerless/hopeless its beyond cruel. A friend of ours was diagnosed a few years ago ,just a regular construction worker aged 49 who could barely catch his breath one Saturday cutting his grass .Thought it was lung or heart issue but had advanced ALS skipping all the usual symptoms right to his lungs. Came home a week later on oxygen ,called his 3 teenage kids into the room kissed them goodbye and switched off his oxygen that night and died in his own bed . I tipped my cap to him took some serious courage to end it before he became a vegetable and in America the financial cost would have crippled his family forever

The Man opposite us In the village we used to live In got MND, a good bloke always working In his garden or out and about or doing something with his life. The poor sod got MND, the last time I saw him he was strapped upright In the back of an ambulance and he was brought home for a couple of hours to visit his wife and two grown up Sons In his garden, a few weeks later he was gone from this Earth. An utterly vicious bastard Illness.

Lewis Moody - Englands Rugby Star diagnosed with Motor Neurone Disease on 08:02 - Oct 8 with 169 views | Harbour | My brother died of MND last year it took 2 years from diagnosis a gradual to begin with decline from losing his mobility to losing his voice. Eventually he could no longer breathe without oxygen. He passed away in a hospice. It’s a horrible disease with no cure. He was not a sports person and did not work in hard manual labour. We never knew why or how he got it.
