Hammersmith Flyover 09:02 - Oct 9 with 4697 views | colinallcars | Plans to demolish it and replace it with a tunnel which it should have been in the first place. I think the traffic may be rather rather heavy during construction. (ahem).

Hammersmith Flyover on 09:56 - Oct 9 by TheChef | Although back to the OP - why? Is the flyover structurally unsound? Seems like a whole load of faff otherwise. |
The steel inside it is rusty. A few years back they fitted some external exo-skeleton to the underside to hold it together. You can see them when you are stuck in traffic on Butterwick

Hammersmith Flyover on 12:50 - Oct 9 by stevec | That sounds like common sense. Not that you’ll get any sane thinking from the brain dead morons involved in the infrastructure of this part of London. Drove the 17 miles from Epsom to the Hogarth roundabout in 45 minutes last week, completed the final 3 miles to Park Royal in another 45 minutes. West London is a complete fck up. As said above it feels like we’re being overseen by aliens determined to bring mankind to its knees. |
"You don't have to be an alien to work here...but it helps!"

Still, when they shut Hammersmith Bridge I bet Barnes village had an upturn in property prices! When my Nans old house in the Bush was damaged in the war the council offered her somewhere in Notting Hill. Oh for a view of the future back then, I could've inherited a fortune!

The same thing happened with my parents house in Battersea. One side of the street was demolished to build tower blocks and houses on the other side of the street now go for £1 million+. Lucky me or I could’ve been a millionaire knuckle dragger. [Post edited 9 Oct 15:33]

Hammersmith Flyover on 18:30 - Oct 9 with 625 views | Tonto | So.... some ITK knowledge: The S40 is part of the TRLN, i.e. managed by TfL not H&F. TfL undertook a bunch of feasibility studies back when Boris was mayor which looked into tunnelling parts of the A40 as one of his big ideas to ease congestion. Lets just say that the outcome of those studies was not particularly positive. Ive not seen this proposal come back. It was simply too expensive, so Im a little surprised to see it here. It seems to come from H&F's local plan, which is all well and good, but as i said earlier its not their road, so that effectively meansdiddly squat. Im surprised the inspector allowed it in the plan as its unachievable. I wouldnt be holding your breath, even though the existing structure is a toothpicks and sellotape job that are akin to Chris Willock's hammy.

Hammersmith Flyover on 10:22 - Oct 9 by KensalT | It's a proposal in a 15-year Local Plan that the council hopes to have adopted by 2027: https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/articles/c24r0z812zno So even if it gets adopted it's probably at least a decade away. The key line is probably: "dubbed a "flyunder", would release land for development" So the lost Victorian street plan would be replaced by blocks of flats! I have no idea how much a tunnel would cost but they're not cheap. It would probably need significant redevelopment of Hammersmith to help pay for it. And shouldn't they sort out the bridge first!? For anyone who lives in the borough and is interested in the 15 year plan there's more information here: https://www.lbhf.gov.uk/planning/planning-policy/local-plan PS: Having taken a quick glance at the plan it seems to also include the Broadway Centre in the proposed redevelopment: "Hammersmith Flyover, A4 and adjoining land (HRA3) - to include A4 land running from Colet Gardens in the east to the Cromwell avenue underpass in the west. Includes the Hammersmith Gyratory, the Broadway Centre, the area south of Black’s Road to Hammersmith Bridge Road, the British Transport Police Station and adjacent land to the east on Talgarth Road, the Ark and West London Magistrates Court. Section 54 page 56 is a bit interesting …..”if Loftus Road comes forward for redevelopment the council will seek residential development….with re-provision of community facilities and open spaces within borough….” roughly is what it says. What does this mean?

Its standard modern planning talk. All new developments have to provide some element of open space for people to be able to go outside and sit, wlak etc. This can be as simple as some patches of grass or something like the back of the BBC development with the playground. Its nothing unusual.
