Ashes thread 18:40 - Oct 9 with 2228 views | BlackCrowe | Kicks off next month with the news that Cummins is likely out of the first test and possibly most/all of the series. That helps.

Ashes thread on 18:54 - Oct 9 with 1625 views | Discodroids | Worried about the bowling attack staying fit. Wood, Archer and Carse are fragile. Stokes is the rack and pinion, if he breaks down it's a whitewash. No spinner worth his salt in the squad and i fear Crawley will be more exposed than the flemmish cap. Off to Wembley 25/10/25 for the Rugby league ashes . First one since 2003. I think we've got even less chance in that! good gawd.

Ashes thread on 19:50 - Oct 9 with 1509 views | CiderwithRsie | Genuinely a bit sad if Pat Cummins is out. A class act with the ball, very decent with the bat and one of the more likeable Aussie cricket captains IMO. On The Other Hand, it's usually us who lose our key fast bowlers so maybe it's about time. If Stokes, Archer and Woods are all fit to bowl in every game (they won't be) England are just an entirely different bowling attack - not just better, but completely different type.
Ashes thread on 20:09 - Oct 9 with 1460 views | Malintabuk | Don't think we can expect Archer or Woods doing a 5 match series More likely it will be a 3-2 split most likely in Archers favour. Spinner is the issue for me.. think it will be Bashir... wouldn't it be nice if Adil decided on one last hurrah We may even just go with Bethell / Root combo sincerely hope not, though I can see Bethell preferred over Pope, if Pope fails in the first 2 tests Brooks, Duckett, Root, and even Smith could be the key, we certainly seem to have the edge batting Stokes though is the key for me. Can he do all 5 tests ? ..... if he doesn't then it will really make it difficult to win
Ashes thread on 20:41 - Oct 9 with 1404 views | BlackCrowe | Would love to see Archer and Wood both playing in at least two of the tests but can't expect more than that i don't think. Bethel instead of Pope for me, a gamble but Pope lacks substance for me and Bethel has unrefined star quality but it's a big call. Lack of quality spin is the biggest concern for me if we can keep our quicks fit.

Ashes thread on 21:10 - Oct 9 with 1319 views | Hooparoo | I think you’ll go close to winning this time. Our team is ageing and with Cummins out we lose a strike weapon for our fast bumpy pitches. We need to rebuild the team and don’t get me started on Steve Smith being captain again. He disgraced us all and should’ve been banned for life for what he did.

Ashes thread on 21:23 - Oct 9 with 1258 views | The_Beast1976 | I'm heading over for the full series. My 5th Ashes tour, which will take me past the 70 away Test Matches mark. Can't wait. I think we've got a great chance this time. Go hard, early, with the full complement of quicks (Archer, Wood, Carse, Atkinson, Stokes). Bethel in for Pope at 3 (mainly on the basis that he can provide some left arm part time spin (to add to Root's part time spin), but also because I think he'll be a better option than Pope at 3 anyway). Bring it on [Post edited 9 Oct 21:28]

Ah, Sydney 2011. What a time to be alive. Great memories (did the full tour that time (2010/11) as well). Hoping this tour/series gets somewhere close to that one for us.....

Mitch Johnson coming out of a restaurant with his wife in the Rocks after day 1 or 2 to be greeted with 40 or so Barmy Army singing the 'he's bowls to the left' song. He utterly sheepish and eyes down, his wife absolutely screaming guttersnipe obscenities. It was perfect.

Beautiful 🙂 We (Barmy Army) went into the clubshop at the SCG on Day 1 and bought every single Mitchell Johnson badge they had and wore them throughout the Test Match (with 'his bowling is shite' written on each one with a marker pen). Memories! [Post edited 9 Oct 21:46]

Those five as seamers, if they were all always fit, it would be an extremely competitive line up against the aussies. Problem being all of them have regular injuries. Yes i think Pope should really be in the last chance saloon, but i think he will always be given opportunties. However, not completely sold on Bethell as yet. i think its a year or so too soon, but hope he proves me wrong. Has undoubted qualities though. Most definitely. I would play Smith at three. Appreciate he has the.gloves too but seriously think he is total class. And Crawley, the man who gets 30s looking like a superstar and then playing a mad ball to create his own downfall... But Crawley's 30s are ok for me....yes he gets out cheaply when he's finally got in but him and Duckett clearly like playing together and offer solid opening partnerships more often than not which is so important and we haven't had that for yonks. I've got no worries about our batting, but i'd def gamble on Bethel over Pope.

Totally agree. I still don't think he's an opener. I hope we come out here a bit more sensible. I love attacking cricket but some of our batting is plain stupid. I'm going 3-1 Aussies. Boland will come in for Cummins. That'll still leave Starc, Lyon and Hazelwood. Plus we don't have a spinner so the urn won't be coming home.

Went to Sydney test in 2003. We were 4-0 down in the series and had lost every game on tour. Despite this, the number of England fans there was huge, flags everywhere (in the days when this was a positive thing) and a brilliant atmosphere, drinking and singing all day. Vaughan scored a superb century and I think we ended the day 200 plus for 1 or something like that. Steve Waugh got out early doors which was fun (can't stand the bloke) and Gilchrist completed a great century before we came in to bat. Also was there when we sealed the 2010-11 series. About 5 Aussies in the ground that day! Tbh I tend to avoid it these days, the media here are so tiresome when it's on. They are absolutely obsessed with beating England whereas the only sport we care about that much as a nation is football. Wood is about as likely to play 5 tests as JCS is to play a full season! Archer is one they genuinely worry about so would be great if he stays healthy. [Post edited 10 Oct 0:13]

The Aussies have very selective memory. Johnson had that one great home series and that's all you'll hear them talk about with him. They overlook the fact that outside that series he was a laughing stock. Jimmy Anderson has double Johnson's test wickets but they'll still try to argue Johnson was better 😂. His golden duck in 2011 in Sydney was hilarious. Walks out to the bowling is shite song (with choreographed crowd moves), gets out, walks off to the bowling is shite song 😄. I think its still on YouTube.

Good point about no spinner (especially in Sydney) but I still think it’ll be a close series. We are a team in decline and they haven’t handled renewal very well.

Don't remember Hick or Ramprakash ever getting a Test double century (267) or 189 against the Aussies in an Ashes test. Every England team has to have a boo boy and Crawley is this one even though he is one half of one of the best opening partnerships in our history. If you boys think Burns or Sibley running out of the way of Starc, when they realise it isn't a county seamer dobbling one down to them at the Oval when they are 500 runs ahead is a better bet, be my guest. Been there, got the t-shirt and it wasn't a pretty sight. My one concern is that Crawley is proven to be brilliant against high pace and I fancy Boland will cause him more problems than Cummins would have done. I do think we have a sniff if Stokesy stays fit and at least two of the pacers play 4/5 tests. However, it is still a very big ask.
Ashes thread on 07:46 - Oct 10 with 617 views | Rsole | Interesting fixtures this time, not starting at the Gabba and making that a pink ball game could work for us. Perth is a new ground too, so perhaps a good chance to start well. Selecting the right bowlers for each game will be critical and I expect rotation but batting order to remain largely the same. Not expecting too many wickets from spin but the way the Aussies use Lyon makes a big difference in controlling one end. Close call, maybe a drawn series. Hoping for some continuation of the series against India for entertainment and edgy results.
| Those possessed by devils, try and keep them under control a bit, can't you ?

Not sure I’d gamble on Bethell over Pope just yet. ATM Bethell is a decent ODI & T20 player, but he’s not a Test player yet, he’s inexperienced and his performance v India in the Summer was poor. 6 off 15, then 5 off 31 in 5th Test, looked nervy and uncomfortable, gave his wicket away both times. His bowling is not up to an Ashes series yet. Pope is experienced, has a proven record (1st innings at least) and a capable WK backup to Smith. An Ashes series in Oz is not the place to take too many risks. Bethell could be a rabbit in headlights out there. Bowling will be key, mostly keeping ours fit enough for 3+ Tests. Stokes, Wood, Archer fitness are of most concern. So is Atkinson. Our spin is weak, none compare to Lyon. McCullum & Stokes say this series is what we’ve been preparing for since the last Ashes (maybe longer ?), to drop Crawley seems unlikely. Him & Duckett have a good record together even if he’s often outscored. But if he and England fail, he should be wary of others replacing him in preparation for the next Ashes series. I’ll be there for Adelaide & Melbourne. Can’t wait.
