You have to do some digging on the BBC website to find this story, but the man who was convicted of a "religiously aggravated public order offence" for burning a copy of the Koran has had his conviction overturned.

Now, obviously nobody should even have been charged with an offence for burning religious material. Blasphemy laws haven't existed in the UK for quite some time, but I very much doubt the people involved in the decision to charge and prosecute Mr. Coskun for doing something which isn't actually a crime will face any serious consequences for doing so.

Pain or damage don't end the world. Or despair, or f*cking beatings. The world ends when you're dead. Until then, you got more punishment in store. Stand it like a man... and give some back.

He will end up a few quid better off.

How a court can find him guilty when it isn’t even a prescribed offence under the public order act is beyond me. The court sentencing him clearly felt it was wrong and he must be punished even though no law covering it. Country is gone.

I’m more alarmed by the guy who used a knife on him who didn’t even see any jail time.

Whole story stinks from both sides. The justice system should be impartial. It clearly isn't.

Definitely not illegal but he was clearly being a bit of a dick. I’m all for criticising and mocking lots of aspects of all religions. I do it myself every day but I think burning a Quran outside a mosque shows a complete lack of respect for those who do live peacefully and respectfully under its banner. Also starting a fire in the streets of a busy urban conurbation is far from a sensible idea and should not be encouraged.

It was outside the Turkish Consulate in Kensington. He could have been arrested for causing a " Breach of the peace ".

This is from what I have read not a criminal offence with a record.

He could have been taken in but released once an event was over.

Two tier Keir justice is alive & kicking.

Meanwhile the BBC are obsessed with putting as many reporters in the Middle East as possible & still they present a biased narrative

A lazy post as most of us have no idea what you are talking about. What is the " two tier " angle.?

Middle east what bias do BBC have?

I doubt this peace plan has any legs unless the Armed Fundamentalist Isrealis setters ( who happen to be of a certain faith) stop annexing Palestinians land. This issue has been deflected again over mass murders and hostage exchanges.

As I understand it Eagle was suggesting Mr Coskun. a Turk was arrested because he was insulting Islam at the Turkish consulate and would not have been arrested if he was making a scene outside burning a bible outside a Christian movement church. Depending on the particular church I would dispute this.

The appeal appears to say he was not guilty of "religious aggravated disorderly conduct'".

The police believed he was going out if his way to create a riot.

It was mistakenly reported it was a Mosque but unfortunately fact it was The Turkish consulate. Most Turks are Muslim but not all. Or could be the judge deemed his action were not provocative as he was not outside a mosque but a Consulate.

This occured roughly around a time when Turkiye were blocking NATO membership for Finland And Sweden for a similar incident earlier in Sweden and were looking for a " pay off" for agreement . F35 Jets for example . Smoke and mirrors. It could by Coskun wanted to create friction between UK and Turkiye.

What not project it under a simple narrative " two tier Kier" it makes it simple for simple minds.

It would appear that saying" born and bred in ***" is being investigated by our wonderful woke ,sorry overworked under valued police as being hate speech .just what is wrong with this country.

Where we are today is as a result of a legislation, guidance and recommendations and investigations spanning almost 30 years. The Stephen Lawrence enquiry highlighted the need to record all incidents perceived as motivated by hostility, not just criminal acts.

This led to a common definition for hate crimes (but not incidents) being agreed by the police and other criminal justice agencies in 2007.

The picture changed again in 2014 when the College of Policing (allegedly an “arm's length body" of the Home Office but in reality it is the Home Office means of exerting control and direction on the police) first initiated advice ( a posh way of saying required / forced) police forces to start keeping records of non-crime hate incidents (NCHIs) which then be inspected by HMIC (Her Majesty’s Inspectorate of Constabulary). If the officers on the ground and the Force got it wrong, didn’t do something they should have etc etc they’d get slammed by the Inspectors, get done on a disciplinary or the Force could be outed and put in special measures. There was a big case in 2019 where a person who’d been investigated for a “hate incident” challenged and won a case against the College of Policing guidance.

In 2022 the then Conservative government introduced legislation which resulted in the code of practice for recording non-crime hate incidents (NCHI) coming into force on June 3, 2023. Once recorded, the incidents have to be investigated which is where we’re at today.

It’s rather ironic (and hypocritical) that some of the politicians who’re most critical of what’s going on today were actually in government when the laws were introduced.

The last government also oversaw a number of what many would call disastrous changes to the Probation Service, there were also changes to the bail act which resulted in police forces being directed down a route to “Release Under Investigation” suspects involved in crime as opposed to bailing them out and not forgetting the closure of the Forensic Science Service.

The two tier angle seems to be any charge or sentencing that an individual doesn’t agree with makes it ‘two tier’.

In many cases this is proved by comparing it with a completely unrelated case with no contextual information.
