The Rwanda deal rightly or wrongly wasn't given a chance to see if it would work which is ironic when you see other course now considering doing similar deals.
Selling the islands is another threat to the security of these islands ,something that any competent politicians would be aware of but then when you have a PM in a previous life fighting the then government against deportation of one of Osama's right hand men from the UK are you surprised.

So Liz Truss was wrong doing the deal you think?
And Johnson should have been throwing them only planes to Rwanda.
Ok.

The deal, was set up in 2019.
I am pretty sure that Starmer wasn’t in power then.
Truss ?

But he is the one who actually signed the deal he did not have to did he.

So did I Rayns, it's very disappointing although I did post after about a month of listening to his comments in the Commons that I thought that he was a wet lettuce and as weak as pizz.

It's very simplistic to say that "we've been in negotiations since 2019" as if the deal signed off on when Labour took over was exactly the same in every way to the initial negotiations. Quite clearly not the case or it would have been agreed years ago.

It seems very obvious that negotiations had dragged on and on for quite some time with the previous Govt unwilling to make significant concessions until Labour took over and accepted whatever the Mauritians demanded.

The chief legal adviser to the Mauritians was of course an old mate of Starmers, which turned out to be tremendously convenient for them.

Indeed so. People seem to have forgotten the juncture when David Cameron and Grant Shapps halted the negotiations over handing back the Chagos Islands. It was only when Labour entered government that the negotiations resumed.

https://www.express.co.uk/news/politics/1855868/britain-scrap-plans-hand-chagos-

As for the argument that the recent influx of Chagossians into the UK has nothing to do with the Starmer/Lammy/Powell deal, look at some of the quotes coming from the recent arrivals. Of course, there is also the question of "why now?" as the possibility of coming to the UK existed well before the deal.

We're going to be in a situation for a while where lots of Labour apologists will be desperate to lay the blame for their failures anywhere else, especially as those cost of those failures continues to mount.

It's important that these lies get exposed for what they are.

I agree with the comments that Starmer has been disappointing. I expected a Prime Minister who acted with honesty and integrity and with a clear political philosophy. That is not what we have got. Apart from the freebies issue and his continual moving of goalposts on policies, no-one really seems to know exactly where he is going, and taking us, the voters, with him.
What is clear is that he is leading the Labour Party into oblivion, allowing the Farage Party to fill the void.

Labour used to be a decent political party. Whether you agreed with them and their policies or not, they were a solid grounded party who worked hard for the benefit of their voters. Those days are gone.

The wealthy and powerful with their wealthy media baron friends did a number on them, communists, terrorist supporters, benefit scroungers etc etc.

The upshot is we went from having a relatively small gap between the highest and lowest paid to one of the biggest gaps when compared to others.
Reform represent the wealth rich and will make the country even worse off by taking off the poor and giving to the rich, the NHS will be under threat for starters.

The rot started with Blair and Brown and the damage was self inflicted. In Wales we have seen a slow decline in living standards, particularly outside SE Wales. This has accelerated over the last 5 years and the reason Labour in Wales are finished. But don't let facts get in the way of an agenda.

Should we have kept paying Rwanda huge sums of money for nothing?
They were laughing at us.
Oh, and wasn’t Truss the one who agreed the Chagos deal. I believe it was.

I read a while back from different media outlets that discussions had taken place from the last lot but no agreement had been reached and certainly no handshakes and who knows how it would have panned out but it doesn’t excuse the final decision taken by Starmer

He’s doing it deliberately I think, he’s humiliating him every opportunity he gets. I said when Labour sent hundreds of activists to campaign for Kamala that Trump wouldn’t forget it. All those years of Starmer and Lammy and all them queuing up to call Trump all sorts of names is biting them on the arse.

I wonder how much support Trump will throw behind Farage in the GE. Labour supporters can't complain Starmer started it.

It was embarrassing, I saw it live. Moments earlier he’d said how beautiful Giorgia Meloni was and asking if she minded him saying that. She just stared back at him, not agreeing but not criticising him either. She handled it beautifully.

I’d love to have seen how Thatcher would have dealt with him. That would have been fun.

Thatcher wouldn't have brought the UK government and it's PM into such an embarrassing position as Starmer has right now , as I've read elsewhere and agree with at she and Reagan took on the soviets full on and won the diplomatic battle, Starmer and his cabinet has to be the worst in living memory .

Absolutely they’re all complicit in this nonsense but Labour are now in power and the final decision to sign it off was ultimately theirs. Also they’re the ones proudly proclaiming it’s a fantastic deal and some sort of incredible diplomatic coup.

At some point they are going to have to take accountability of the fact that they are in charge now. They’ve made an absolute pigs ear of things so far. They’ve gone back on pretty much every election promise and been embroiled in scandal after scandal.

We all know and agree with the concept of the 14 years of shambles that preceded it, we were there. 18 months in we’d expect to see green shoots at least, but it’s got worse if anything.

The citizenship deal for the Chagossians has absolutely nothing to do with Labour, as has been said earlier in the thread.
The previous Conservative regime introduced the legislation which enables anyone of Chagossian descent to claim British citizenships within 5 years from November 2022 - that’s nothing to do with Starmer.

Starmer has hardly set the world on fire, but blaming him for this is farcical.
