World Cup regulars Nigeria & Chile have failed to qualify & Sweden need to win their last two games to have any chance of making the play offs.
There will be far too many countries at the World Cup finals & being played across three countries will be a travelling nightmare, but I quite like that nations like New Caledonia, Curaco & the Faroe Islands still have hope. Not much, but it is the World Cup & not just a competition for Europe & South America! Thankfully there are not many more (or any) Europeans at this than there was in Qatar.
The USA beating England in 1950 (before my birth), North Korea winning against Italy in 1966 & Cameroon with nine men getting past Argentina in 1990 are events that bring the whole world together in laughter & disbelief. Here's hoping that another result of that kind happens next year. |  | | |

I think thereโs an argument for having a certain number of teams automatically in the finals rather than qualifying. South American qualification is particularly silly now. Perhaps based on the previous tournamentโs last eight or sixteen. Using rankings would be a bit dodgy given how theyโre collated.
On the flip side, thereโs a bit more jeopardy now in the four team European groups. Germany and Italy (five teams) have struggled. The second tier of European sides are closing the gap and the third tier are closing in too albeit with exceptions as there will be with a poor generation of players (Ireland etc.). If they did some sort of pre-qualifying for the San Marino types to give those countries more competitive games - or used the Nations League slots for that - to give Europe only four team groups that would be good. | | | |

Thats always a great part of the World Cup, like the FA Cup 3rd round you get games you didn't think you'd see. Saudi Arabia beating Argentina in the last world cup, the Germans losing to South Korea in 2018. Cameroon in Italia 90.
The good teams will end up playing each other at some point, I don't really need to see that in qualfiers or group stages

I do think that England looks far more like a proper team and squad than for some time before. Tuchel has not been tested but he is a bit like Stephan in that they change things if needed and take no prisoners along the way. That's good in my book. |  |

For me its almost a comedown once the number of games reduces and the chess matches/penalty shootouts start to take over. | | | |

Yep the whole lot of cup competitions are being ruined, whether it is our domestic competitions through to UEFA cup competitions and now FIFA's flagship World Cup. All in pursuit of TV money and sponsorship. The game is becoming so bloated and unrecognisable from when I was a lad, it's always been a business, but this now just seems a giant Ponzi scheme, waiting for it all to crumble under its own excess.
