Both hooked at half time against Brentford this evening seems like the manager doesn't like ex Saints players after his treatment of JWP

It says a lot about the standard of our squad that they were arguably our 2 best players. When compared to average Premier League players at West Ham and Brentford, they both look poor. The same, of course, could be said of Ward-Prowse.

The quality of our squad has really plummeted over the last 10 years, with progressive downgrades in nearly every transfer window. So much so, that Premier League clubs cherry-picking from it now find they are ending up with dross. What we are left with is even worse.

9 years ago today we were playing Inter Milan in The San Siro.
Tomorrow we play Bristol City away after a goalless draw against Swansea City at the weekend.

Sad isn’t it?

We thought that we had the answers, It was the questions we had wrong.

It’s a cyclical game.

Leicester won the Prem in the same season, and they are barely any better off than us.

Poll: Would you take going down to League 1 if it meant new owners coming in?

Apart from winning the FA Cup between then and now.
Remember the semi final?

I meant they are barely any better off than us now…..

Their decline has been a lot more spectacular than ours.

Very sad indeed.
We had Fraser Forster, Virgil van Dijk (captain), Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg, James Ward-Prowse, Oriol Romeu & Dušan Tadić playing that night. Not one of those players has been replaced like for like, always downgrades as our beloved club slips further and further into to the tar pit of mediocrity, not just under SR but also under the previous administration. Whilst I had a degree of sympathy with Gao as the Chinese government threw a completely unexpected spanner in the works, just a few days after he took over, by deciding with immediate effect that they would no longer allow Gao and others to spend their fortunes outside of China, even making specific reference to not allowing them to invest any money in clubs in the PL or other top European leagues. SR on the other hand I have no sympathy for whatsoever as they drive this club further and further downwards with their idiotic decision making which outweighs the occasional thing they get right about 10 > 1.

Very true Pat.

What worries me under SR is not how far we have fallen but how much further we have to fall. You rightly mention Leicester from 9 years ago but (not in the same time frame) look what happened to Oldham, one of the founder members of the PL along with Wimbledon, another founder member. Of the PL's 22 founder members only half are still top flight today.

Under SR the future really is beginning to worry me as they never seem to learn from their major mistakes no matter how obvious the situation is to the rest of us, such as the need to bring in proven goalscorers not dross like Damien Downs.

And now 4th and 13th in The Premier League even after losing managers and a shit load of players.
Then of course Brighton.

Your last paragraph sums it up.

Surely you learn from your mistakes?
Jones, Selles, Rusk, Juric…
Then another experiment with Still.

On the day Dyche goes to Nottingham Forest and Röhl takes over at Rangers.

You reap what you sow.

We forget the fact that at Inter Milan Claude Puel was criticised for playing a virtual second string,

Forster & Van Dijk were regulars, but the rest weren't, indeed Forster was often criticised on this site back then

Hojbjerg Started just 14 games plus 8 as sub, he couldnt get in the side because of Oriol Romeu and Steven Davis, even the following season he only started half the games, before forcing his way into the side at the expense of Romeu a couple of years later, both players were not fan favourites at the time. Hojbjerg is an example of how someone who initially looked like he was not good enough, turned out to be very good.

James Ward Prowse was another who was not convincing in the eyes of the fans back then starting just 22 games,

Tadic would start 30 games this season, after starting just 24 in his first season, but again he was not convincing a large part of the fans base with just 4 goals in his first season and 3 in this one.

For me the decline is around one thing. Recruitment.
In past years we found very good players from around Europe at reasonable fees. Most of which we had never heard of before they came here. Tadic, Mane, Schneiderlin, Svensson and even Van Dijk and Wanyama etc.
Some turned out to be top stars , some didn't.

Our recruitment over the last few years hasn't been anywhere near as good. It's not a surprise, no team can sustain that level of successful signings on a budget. I'm pretty sure that sooner or later Brighton and Bournemouth will suffer a similar fate.

The decline is down to one thing " Sports Republic".
They are accountable for every wrong decision made since they took over.
It would be wrong to blame Managers / Coaches or players because they cannot help being not good enough, blame the incompetence of those that appointed them.

You have a point.
Selles and Jones were never going to turn the job down.
Its not their fault they were out of their depth.

Yes, and last season Luton were relegated having obtained 49 points.

Lose at Bristol tonight and Blackburn on Saturday and more than a quarter of the season will have gone with us on 12 points.

You do the maths as the recent Dacia car advert used to say.

Two very important games which will define the season. A couple of wins and we are back in the hunt with promotion a very outside possibility, anything less and it’s mid table mediocrity at best and relegation not out of the question.
