How would airlines make it a condition of travel when it's not available to everyone on demand?

Or are you suggesting that they might arrange it for all of their passengers?

Not smartarseing; genuine thought..

It'll take time for the vaccine to be issued and the airlines will make a decision after that has happened. This isn't going to be quick - latest estimates I've seen suggest 4-6 months more of restrictions like we have now. By then, enough vaccines will have been manufactured and used globally to warrant the decision to create community immunity.

Similarly, the European Air Agency are suggesting that, even with a vaccine in early 2021, air travel is unlikely to return to pre-Covid levels until at least 2024 and possibly 2026.

When the vaccine is available to the wider community is the point when I'd expect we'll start to see a loosening of other controls, e.g. theatres, sports, cinemas, restaurants, etc. I'd also suggest it's nearer probable than likely that those industries will be signed up to a passporting system to gain access. For example, if the club are finally allowed to run coaches to away games, it'd be reasonable to expect them to ask people to show evidence of immunity through vaccine, antibody certification, etc. before allowing them to travel on a coach.

It's always noisiest at the shallow end

Apologies you're correct and do you know how many others have been 'completely eradicated' erm ONE 'Rinderpest' Google tells me!

People die from seasonal flu - about 20,000 in the UK alone in bad year - about 8 -10,000 is 'average' and we have had flue vaccine around for a while - even extending the free vaccination programme to the over 50s isn't going to stop people dying let alone completely eradicate it - that's the not the aim surely - its so that like measles, mumps, chicken pox, flu - we can live 'normally' with all those diseases as we always have done.

No need to apologise my friend. My point was more around the fact that globalisation isn't a "modern" phenomenon and that diseases spread globally can be treated with vaccination.

To say the vaccine is untested is quite plainly not true, so where is the argument?

I know replying to your post is a complete waste of my time and replying to this an equal waste of yours :D

I don't know what the worry is really, only the most at risk will get it ATM the rest will have to wait 4/6+ months maybe longer

So by then, we will know a lot more with only the old and vulnerable taking any risk from the vac.

You brave souls.

Woah there, those working in healthcare are also going to be at the front of the queue

Quick numbers check for those of us under 65

There are 12.3 million people over 65, of those 8.7 M are over 70 and 1.6 million over 85.

There are approx 400,000 care home residents and about 1.5 million NHS workers, although obviously not all those will be 'frontline'

My Facebook is full of mates rejecting the vaccine on the basis they don’t know what’s in it.

I find this funny because I’ve seen them hoover up bugle they brought off a stranger from a Nightclub toilet seat.

It's mad isn't it? See my cigarrettes post on the other thread. Something that's proven to kill you, shorten your life, ruin your health, rot your teeth, clog your arteries, wreck your lungs, age you, ruin your skin, make you stink, and cost you £10 a pack - fine. Something with only proven benefits, to protect you in a pandemic, tested and zero negative outcomes or side effects, that they're giving you for free - oooooh careful mate, don't know what's in it.

I think it's essentially because a lot of people are getting mugged off believing nonsense spread by random loons on the internet. Some people are just very suggestible, but paradoxically at the same time reject information from reputable and accountable sources.

Found quite funny on Jeremy Vine show, talking about ideal 2020 Xmas day TV viewing, was suggested live vaccination of David Attenborough after the queens speech. Must admit, that’s got everything.

Christ, can you imagine the furore when he turns into the "Thing" on live tv with kids and grans watching?

Another point is that Covid is a coronavirus and therefore structurally similar to other coronaviruses for which we have got a vaccine, so may be easier to vaccinate against. I think I read somewhere that someone who got SARs seemed to be immune from Covid, so there's already some crossover. Ebola and HIV are completely separate illnesses and may be more difficult to vaccinate against (more complex structures?).

Yep, HIV is a retrovirus and that is the main reason why we're still after a vaccine.
There is now a very efficient vaccine against Ebola, approved by the WHO in november 2019.

One thing to consider for the efficiency of a vaccine is about the number of people exposed to the disease in both control and test groups. Obviously far easier with covid than with Ebola

See https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ebola_vaccine

I voted 'yes' but considering my lifestyle, age and health I'll be right bottom of the list of people to receive the vaccine.

If the time does come, I don't see why I wouldn't take it. I've got more chance being stabbed on my daily walk in the park then having any bad side effect from the vaccine.

I just heard a WHO official talk about a 3rd wave in the new year. Can’t we just call it a Mexican wave instead?
It’s annoying to see it going round and it’s even more annoying when it gets to where you are,and you just wish that it would stop as soon as possible.

This might or might not help those who are asking what's in the Pfizer/BioNTech vaccine.

What is in the Pfizer/BioNTech vaccine?
The active ingredient is messenger RNA that carries instructions for making the virus’s spike protein, which it uses to gain entry to cells. The mRNA is synthetic, not extracted from actual viruses. It is delivered in a tiny sphere of inert fatty material called a lipid nanoparticle.

The RNA-bearing nanoparticles are suspended in saline solution and injected into muscle tissue in the upper arm. The mRNA is then taken up by specialist immune cells, which follow its instructions to make the spike protein, just as they would do if they had become infected with the actual virus.

The spike protein is recognised as foreign by the immune system, which mounts an attack against it. Antibodies, B cells and T cells are activated, according to UÄŸur Åžahin, the chief executive of the small German company BioNTech that co-developed the vaccine with US drug giant Pfizer. An immune memory is also laid down, he says, which means the immune system has learned how to defeat the pathogen and is primed to mount a swift response if it encounters the coronavirus again.

My Father had a profound influence on me, he was a lunatic.

President Pompidou once swam off a Pacific island used for French nuclear tests, and was only later revealed to be dying of cancer (already, it should be said).

1 Question is do we want our normal lives back ?
2.
Do we want to return and watch our beloved QPR?
3. Do we want to escape this rain soaked rock and go on nice foreign holidays?
4. Do you want to give your gran/ grandad a hug?
5 Do you want to go on and see your favourite bands at joyous festivals?
6 Do you want to go to pub?
If you answered yes to all these questions. GET VACINATED.
All your dreams will come true!!

Worth noting that in this not-very-scientifc poll less than 9% of us are saying we won't have it and over 80% definitely will.

I'm kinda taken by the suggestion from my customer today - it should be a matter of choice, but if you choose not to be vaccinated when offered don't expect to be a priority for treatment if you get the virus.

Tories/Brexit/Trump/Bolsanaro/Modi etc etc

All their victories are down to a mixture Social and Old Media manipulation by the Alt Right during a climate of Liberal insipidness and hand wringing over the decline of living standards post 2008 crash.

Pasokification is the result politically, but anti vaxxing, the fear of the other, and a propensity to use conspiracy theories as an emotional crutch are the social consequences.

People just don’t have access or don’t want to believe the truth any more because the truth is usually complicated and difficult to process. The only way to feel good and have a break from your worries when you have no money or access to social and welfare facilities is to comfort yourself with lies that the causes stems from manufactured but simple punchbags like Birthergate or EU regulation about Bananas and immigrants.

I am suggesting that they should insist on evidence passengers jabs are up to date or include a voucher in the ticket price to pay for one prior to travel .
