With the football season coming to a close in a months time, some here will turn their attention to the smell of freshly mown grass and long days sat in the hot sunny weather watching the great game of cricket.

As a member of Kent Cricket Club, I got to enjoy my first match of the season against Somerset at Canterbury over the last few days. Unfortunately, as is always the way starting the season this early, the first day was lost to rain. In fact nearly all the games were affected by rain, some without a ball even being bowled.

But I did manage to get to see 2 centurions at Canterbury yesterday and a very enjoyable day of cricket (even if I did get sun burned head - Yes I know should have taken a cap).

Did anyone else get to see cricket over the last few days? I know we have several Middlesex supporters who no doubt enjoyed the 'runfest' at Lords (over 1300 runs I believe)

Don’t get me wrong Swann is clearly better - but Emburey’s record in Australia (35 wickets at 32) is pretty good. If Bashir averages 32 this winter I’d be amazed (and pleased!)

Wow, didn't know that. Yes if Bashir averages that and plays all the tests we may bring home the urn!

Er Middlesex thanks!

Nice try with the selectors attempting to shoehorn in as many Surrey players as possible for this one Didn't quite work out.

Ifs but and maybes, but a few more runs in the first innings and a fit Woakes probably would have made the difference.

Ah well, Test cricket you gotta love it.

Sorry Chef, my bad

I would say the selectors Surrey choices did indeed backfire. I disagree though re the first innings. Had our bowling been tighter across the 2 innings we would have won. Lets take that Tongue over for example. Without that over we would have won.

But yes very true, if's, buts and maybe's

Yep. 22 wides over the two innings is unforgiveable at international level really. India bowled half that number over the two innings.

In fact in total England gave away 47 runs in wides and byes, India just 19.

Think because we are in the period of the 16:4 not much cricket to discuss. But with all the drama going on at HQ the recent Australian 50 over score seems to have gone under the radar the other day against South Africa.

Australia had struggled in the earlier one day matches but on Sunday they hit 431/2 in 50 overs with Marsh, Head and Green (their top 3 batsmen) all hitting centuries. In fact Cameron Green hit his 118 off 55 balls. Amazing score for a 50 over match

Oh, Ravi Bopara! Oh Ravi Bopara!

It would have been an injustice not to acknowledge the incredible innings from oh, Ravi Bopara!, to get minnows and huge underdogs, Northamptonshire over the line against the mighty, monied Surrey.

A team that can call in top shelf, T20 great, Adam Zampa for a few games, because they can, and wanted him back alongside Mitch Santner for Thursday's game, because they can. It's not as if their non-playing squad for that game wasn't replete with talent already: Topley, Sibley, Worrall.

Make no mistake, this was the tournament Surrey wanted to win above any other this season. However, they reckoned without 40-year old Ravi Bopara. Onto year 23 without winning the domestic T20. Oh, Ravi Bopara! You always had it and have clearly still got it. Take a bow and very well done.

Ravi Bopara innings is whats brilliant about sport.

Without him, the result goes as expected, but its the kind of story that constantly happens in sport, and its why everyone follows all kinds of sports and why there is such massive interest always.

Speaking as a Surrey fan, absolutely fair enough Bopara, well played sir and a great spectacle to watch.

Take a bow Jacob Bethell.

First ever first class century and has already captained England at full international level before this, also.

The hierarchy believe he is the next big thing in cricket and us plebs bow to their knowledge.

What a career ahead potentially for this boy.

Its looking promising for the lad, no doubt....

Didnt see Archers burst but very promising and hopefully can be replicated in Australia.

Winning a 50 over a side international by 342 runs is brutal !!!

What carnage indeed !!!

Top post... and Bethall is a talent.

But this 100 is the killing of talent... a whole month taken away from proper cricket is not doing the lad any favours.

The sooner it is gone the better.

Showed yesterday the need to keep Archer fit and firing for the Ashes, with him there is a chance....

And the old boy made another century.... what a player... arise Sir Joe Root

Though a great win... can't help but think this might have been game to far for SA....

Bethell is a serious talent - let’s see how he does in Australia, if he gets selected. That’s a completely different proposition to South Africa, at home in September against a SA team that’s already won the series. He should have been out much earlier, bar that very poor dropped catch. That won’t happen down under and he won’t be smashing Natan Lyon with a test match field set for him.

Fascinating to see if England go after the Aussies or adapt their game a little in the Ashes. Not starting at the Gabba is a good first step for the tour. Keeping Archer fit and firing for that, along with Wood is critical.

I don’t like the 100 much either, but Bethell did use it to get some form. Shame he didn’t play more county cricket before hand. That was a mistake that he has acknowledged and will hopefully learn from.

Assume we are giving him captaincy responsibility for England to stop him focusing on franchise cricket. Think that’s a good move because the guy will make a lot of money in the IPL and other competitions.

Those possessed by devils, try and keep them under control a bit, can't you ?

Yes funny how it took England three games to get back in the swing of 50 over cricket.

The schedules and all the different formats (well, The Hundred...) is killing the game and burning out the players.

Didn't help he carried the drinks for a month against India either ... the lad needs to be playing cricket.

I know that the England set up want him and I guess they we integrating him... but think it was a mistake

The big question will be him or Pope. For me I would like to see Rew given a chance. Same age as Bethell and already has 11 first class hundreds and averages over 41... and bowls a little left arm

Guess though the England team favour Bethall... a big gamble seeing that he has yet to prove himself in the longer formatc

They’ve gone all in on a few players now, Bethell is definitely one of them - Crawley and Bashir too.

Some are going to pay off big time if managed correctly and I think the set up is handling most of their decisions quite well. Stokes is a great captain and I think he’s respected, revered and feared by everyone in the game. Baz was a great addition, supporting Stokes as a servant leader should.

Not as convinced about Brook as a captain but let’s give him the benefit of the doubt. Would have preferred someone like Duckett but maybe he’s not that bothered and I just love watching him bat and focus on that. Duckett was so cool under pressure against India but maybe he’s not tactically shrewd enough to captain. Totally unconvinced with Pope as vice captain but they will continue with him for sure - how many referred TV appeals did he make before one actually went his way for example ? Shocking decision making.

My biggest takeaway from it all is that it’s certainly a shitload more entertaining to watch England that it was previously and that counts for a lot - across the whole game. I hope QPR can emulate at least some of that this season.

Australia away is always the great leveller. Another level of competition, sledging, crowd abuse and pressure. Even Root is struggling down under and he’s the best run machine we will ever see in my lifetime.

So tempting to go to Perth with non-stop flights….

I'm the same opinion re Brooks. I still think his decision in that last test v India cost us the series... he should have brought us home instead of playing that pull he did

Funnily enough it seemed everyone blamed Bethell.... but I thought the lad was on an hiding to nothing ....

Last night again, run out, when it was an impossible run...

A friend of ours is doing the Barmy Army tour of Aus... the whole series, looks fantastic... including playing games... Still 20k plus wants to be

I’ve done Sydney once and the MCC twice now but none of the other grounds.

Time and money have always prevented those extensions but what a tour. Also had to convince the missus - leave her at home, she’s not happy. Take her with, not happy if you attend all five days of every game.

I know there’s a third option too - BUT that is really expensive & painful (time consuming with the wrong people too !).

BBC highlights and the free C9 live feed it is (again) this year. VPNs are worth the annual fee.

Nothing, but nothing gave me more pleasure than to see Surrey choke with that team they had against plucky Northants and a fine example of how anything can happen on the day

I spent the weekend in Manchester, for, yes you guessed it our quarter final versus Lancs. And if it had not been for Liam Livingstone, who in truth played a blinder we too may have caused an upset, especially when in their reply they were 5-2. I was surrounded by some very passionate but fair Lancs supporters who all said we gave them a scare. Got to stay in the hotel that overlooks the ground too so that was an experience as Old Trafford is definitely the best one I have been to.

One thing we all agreed on was the discussion of why we were having our arses handed to us on a plate by SA (obviously before yesterdays match) and that's because we do not have our national team playing 50 0ver cricket anymore. We will not progress far in any W/C and I suspect the women will come up against the same issues next month too.

As for Ravi, he has scored 3 centuries, one of which was against us. He is a fine player and solid all rounder even at his age. Sure Surrey will try to sign him next season

Very quiet by all accounts. Doesn’t mean he couldn’t captain but I suspect he’s down the list.

Like Duckett, great watching him bat. The guy seriously smashes the ball and plays like a modern day Gilly/Baz combo. Box office when he gets going.

I would probably quite unfairly not take Pope to Australia. I just don't think the bloke has the minerals for a hard fought and hostile series. Never seems to score runs in adversity like Thorpe or Stokes or many others. Don't know enough about county cricket but would like to give someone else given a chance.
