First half we looked tight and closed them down. We didn't create much and villa had much of the play but weren't really hurting us.
The Villa substitutions made all the difference. Once Watkins and Marlon came on they were very dangerous. As for our substitutions, they offered very little. Smallbone drifted around aimlessly in the middle, leaving massive gap for lead ups o 2nd goal, Dibling looked ok today and was obviously told to get his steps in today !
Fernandes put a real shift in. There was certainly more effort today, but Villa were just too good on the day. | | | |

As soon as Watkins came on, that was it. His quality told, and that's why all of the defending in the first half and the penalty save counted for nothing. It doesn't matter how we play, or the tactics, these teams have more quality every week. It doesn't matter who is manager, we are just playing much better teams week after week. Same old story. It's unbeleiveable how we huff and puff so much and just cannot score, even if their lives depended on it. Pass, pass, pass, miss, miss, miss. Watkins breezes through the defence and scores just like that. The Saints team is the worst team I have ever seen.
The effort was there. Lots of fight, penalty saves, last ditch tackles and the rest of it. But we are just rubbish. [Post edited 12 Apr 18:38]

It doesn't matter who is manager if the team is that bad. Ralph had the same problems as anyone, when we got rid of Broja and Ings and didn't replace them. And every manager since. If the team can't score, you can't win games. Had we brought on Watkins today, it would have been us who got the goal. It's that simple really. The other teams have much better players, where it matters, than we do. They score, we don't. And it's because they have better players with more quality. This is all on the terrible recruitment that the owners should have been overseeing. [Post edited 12 Apr 19:45]

As I said on another thread yesterday.....
Hassenhutl was great for the first two years; he had the team pressing high up the pitch, and he got a lot out of players like Redmond, Stephens and Ward-Prowse, who all improved under him.
However, season 3 (coinciding with Rohl leaving??) and we stopped doing what had worked so well. We became slow and laborious on the ball and we didn't press up the pitch. The season started really well and we went top of the League, but ended on a real downer and you could see trouble looming.
And then that summer we sold Ings and were reliant on Armstrong, Adams and Mara for goals.
Hassenhutl lost his mojo, and probably needed a year or two out of the game to recharge his batteries and get rich in the meantime.
Fair play to him for what he has done at Wolfsburg, but he was a busted flush at Saints. | |
