The season 25-26 squad thread 10:22 - Apr 13 with 25782 viewsngbqpr

*July 28th updated...*

I have included dev squad players who had first team minutes last season but not those (eg Tuck or the lad from Aberdeen) who've had pre-season minutes as realistically we won't know til we see the bench on Aug 9 if any of them are genuinely in the frame...I've made an exception with Esquerdinha unless / until we sign another LB.

I have now bracketed Lloyd and Dixon Bonner away from the main list due to strong rumours of loan / departure...and also Richards, as he seems to have disappeared again.

GKs
Nardi / Walsh / Salamon

CBs
JCS / Morrison / Cook / Mbengue

FBs
Dunne / Adamson / Larkeche / Esquerdinha

Midfield*
Chair / Dembele / Field / Madsen / Varane / Vale / Smyth / Morgan / Bennie / Sutton / Poku
(Richards / Dixon Bonner)

(* obvs in a 433 some of these play as wide forwards, but I reckoned it was easier to bunch them in here, and keep 'strikers' to those playing centrally up top and charged with leading our goals for column).

Strikers
Celar / Kolli / Burrell / Frey
(Lloyd)

As ever, please shout if any obvious misses.

I think Tylon Smith will be part of the first team squad.

Akindileni is more likely I have thought, but both depends on JCSs fitness

Agree with Akindileni and been really impressed with his in pre season. Blokes a unit at 17. I think what will increase is play time is that he is actually a left sided, left footed center back. Until JCS appears, it is just him and the team looks more balanced when he is playing

I've not included him or Fox cos their contracts ran out on June 30, and we've heard nothing official other than that the club is talking to them (and that was several weeks back before all the pre-season games).

Smith is 20, which is the age Nourry said should be in the first team squad & was the player of the tournament in the African Under 20's.

I don't believe that he has come to be in the development team.

Also not seen in any training vids or photos.

They are gone until they resign. From what I have seen of Adi, I don't think we need Foxy back after all. Also, Tuck seems to be coming through for Colback, we shall see.

He will initially. Let's see how quickly that promotion happens.

“I’m very happy to be here,” said a smiling Smith, who will initially integrate into the Development Squad.

Fair enough but that DS plan of Nourry's will take time to work through. In addition to Smith, 6 other DS players are 20 or older.

I'm a little concerned at the moment.

We have a very young, inexperienced. squad with only very few leaders and we really lack physical presence.

Seemingly first choice keeper wity practically no experience.

Back up centre backs with no experience.

Left backs with almost no experience (at this level)

Lacking leadership and bite in midfield. We can't have Madsen playing a quarter back role in a central mid is two. Has Varanes head already been turned?

Strikers, 10 games out of Frey, Celar needs to be moved on, don't know enough about Burrell, not convinced about Ba and Kolli needs a year loan in league 1.

I still think we need 3/4 first team players. Not Dev players.

Maybe the Eze money helps if he moves?

Now waiting for the drama queen response...🙄

Finally, aware that we've still got 6 weeks to sort it out. But feeling the squad is a bit too Dev heavy (really really praying some of them step up)

You are not on X, so most will agree with you on here; I know that I do. Kids are fine to supplement a team with a strong spine. Without injuries we have a strong spine, with them light in the middle and light up top.

CBs prob OK, but CM without Varane v poor and up top, no Frey, no go...

Can we go out yet?

I don't think the squad is quite as inexperienced as you say. Walsh, Adamson, Esquerdinha, Vale and Burrell have little or no experience of Championship football but have played plenty of games elsewhere. The rest of the squad is fine in that respect.

Dunne, Cook, Field and Chair are leaders and others bring good character to the side.

It's not easy to judge how things will go but I'm not dreading the coming season at this point.

Alas, our finances will dictate a lot at this stage, expect to see our squad buttressed with loans.
I'm very optimistic about our general direction, but think this will be a difficult season, the speed we can build at very much governed by what we can spend.

Thanks for responses and I'll merge my thoughts into one.

I forgot about Vale and think he looks like a good prospect.

Absolutely agree about the spine but can't see Cook playing more than 15 games this season. As you mentioned, if we lose a couple it will be very challenging. But I'm not even sure our first team is as good as we think it is with our rose to tinted glasses on.

Just to add the im excited about the young ads we've bought into the squad over the last 18 months. Definitely feels as though we have a new direction and I'm all on board with that. We've always been a selling a club (at least when I was a lad) so nothing really changes there.

I think it comes down to the fact that we need to stay injury free for as much of the season as possible. Alas we don't have a very good record in that department.

Not strictly true regarding Walsh. At the same age, Murphy Cooper has played treble the number of league games Walsh has (75 to 26). Cooper has been a first choice keeper for full campaigns in League One and Two, whereas the most Walsh has managed in a single season is 10.

Cooper will be on over 100 games by the end of this season. If it's about experience, Cooper has more. Walsh over Nardi (at this stage) feels like overreach but Walsh over Nardi over Cooper just seems unnecessarily risky.

What do I know? Nardi could be carrying a knock or have the plague. In which case, better get the reserve up to speed.

I am (trying to be) genuinely positive but that’s more because I’m very happy to have signed up Dunne, Field, Chair and Varane. I also like the look of the new signings - their age and profile.
I also think likes of Dembele, Varane and Madsen will be better this season than last. I’m also happy with the manager’s experience and history. On paper, he’s exactly we need. I also think, if we end up with a strike force of Ba, Burrell, Frey, 1 other and Kolli in reserve, it’s better than last season because it’s not the same as last season.

That all being said, if I look at the squad / team compared to the other teams….I’m concerned because the league looks a lot stronger. But given our financial position….what else can we do?

Fed up with this throwing our hands up and blaming the budget other teams on similar budgets out perform us every year .

Millwall being one of them

Looking at our squad , the current injuries and the general performances in pre season I think we are bang in trouble and looked very undercooked (again) going into the first game

Millwall have bigger budget this window, as shown by their signings because they made a big sale. We haven’t. You may get fed up but it’s the truth. We need a big sale to spend more.

Last few seasons they haven't had a bigger budget though .

We had some money last summer and look what we did with it . Budget is a constrate but the club should be better in every single department

As a fan base we seem to use the budget as an excuse to not hold people accountable

The only sizeable sale we’ve had is Eze. We had some sales last year that paid for the incomings. We spent more than prior seasons but nothing compared other clubs. Millwall also made big sale last season. We have to start selling for c 10m for a player, then we can start competing more.

But Millwall have never been in the Prem or recently in the play offs. We want to build a squad that will peak maybe next season and make the play offs rather than be 8th or 9th every season.

If drama queen is disagreeing with you, here goes. It's a shame because overall you've got a point but as usual you exaggerate the negative to make your point.

Agree re: Walsh. I guess you have to play a new goalkeeper at some point but yes it's a gamble.

Our second tier CBs include Mbengue who has 26 Championship matches and 71 League 1 ganes, so used to the English game. Meanwhile JCS should appear at some point. So not exactly no experience.

Agreed re LB. Concerned about this. Hope to see an experienced loanee at least.

Varane and Field certainly don't lack bite. Issue is if Varane stays we need back up. If he goes you need two more DMs.

Frey played equivalent of 20 full matches last season not ten so pointless exaggeration. Burrell strengthens our forward line adding pace and physicality.

I also think though we've generally added pace and physicality compared to last season so some upside. But your overall point that we definitely need more experience I agree with. I really hope this is addressed by 31/08.

There is a new Inside Training video on the offy. I didn't see Frey, Celar or Burrell. And no Esquerdinha either - is he injured as he wasn't in the match day squads for the last two friendlies?

There were two young players I didn't recognise from the DS. One with big hair (not the new CB Smith) and the other quite stocky looking. Does anyone know them?

Bennie seemed to be playing as a striker. Perhaps Stephan sees him in that position but I'm not convinced.

I would need to see the video.

They could be trialists. There were 5 of them in the last Devt Squad friendly.
