Good news if true

Be good if we reach an agreement but it should be a much reduced wages. Hopefully they can agree the fee that he was paid for his first season with us.

Same with Colback if we can agree reduced wages then he would be good for one more season.

Experience and good pro's are very valuable for the dressing room.

Pleased about that.

His own game has been good and seems to have had a good impact on Dunne, Morrison and JCS.

Reckon he’ll be our manager at some point.

mixed feelings - on one hand he’s the dressing room leader and great influence on the rest of the squad. on the flip side he’s coming to the end of his career and injuries are massively disruptive both to his form and to our defensive lineup.

as the clubs highest earner would that money be better spent elsewhere?

Glad he's staying. We need leaders and we need experience. Plus, he's a damn good defender.

Hope the medical people are confident, and hope we're not over-paying him. We have no way of knowing on either front, so all we can do is trust.

To be fair, the other younger centre backs are injured as much if not more than Cook.

Ya, we're not ageist at Rangers. We like unavailable players of all ages.

Agree with what you say, but I would hope that all this has been taken into consideration when offering his new contract. With the man-boy in charge and seeing the Dunne situation I would think that Steve's new contract isn't gonna break the bank. Good news if true.

Totally disagree. He's only 33 and been a magnificent pro so surely some good years left. We won't get much better than him for this league without spending a lot. Morrison is very promising but JCS is made of glass and Edwards will be in stripes not hoops next season. Getting him to sign is very important in my opinion. Those countless Championship games up North under aerial bombardment - I know who I want there to stick his body on the line. Captain Cook.

We've had a good history of getting a tune out of seasoned gnarly old pros down the years, and Cook does bring some heft to the squad. So I also think it's good news.

This leads to a question: What about Colbeck? Too many disciplinary and injury concerns and he turns 36 in October. Again, does bring something to the party, not sure for how much linger though.

This is good news.
With Dunne, Paal and potentially Colback, Andersen and Frey all leaving we need some consistency

Must admit I thought he was older.. he looks it!

I understand the point about his wages and injury record. Hopefully the club have done due diligence (lol) and taken a good look at his injuries this year and come to an evaluation of what that means for next season.

I think ultimately the point that Clive has made on a few pods about the risk of losing all the experience in the squad in one fell swoop would be too damaging to a team as apparently mentally fragile as ours is correct, so this has be taken as good news.

Just saw he is 34 on Saturday, so perhaps my 33 point is a bit of a stretch :-)

Maybe one more year makes sense for the back row team. Morrison is growing but the ‘handsome one’ will be gone and we still need a leader in the midst. If the numbers are right it makes some sense to keep him. Not sure how much this injury will impact his appearances next season and with JCS back to injuries it’s a bit of a worry.

Seriously hope this is true. In spite of his injuries this season, he's still played in 31 league games this season, 36 last season. Morrison has only managed 15 to date. JCS just 11.

His knowledge and experience will be invaluable for the likes of Morrison. He's played about 180 premier league games, played at this level and below with Bournemouth. He's still durable, has a fantastic attitude, still has a lot to offer on the pitch and in imparting his wealth of knowledge to younger defenders on the training ground.

He's virtually the same age as Van Dijk. If Liverpool have finally come to their senses and offered him a new contract, I see no reason why we shouldn't do the same with Cook. We need some experienced players in our squad for next season and Cook fits that bill perfectly. Were we to not sign him, we'll be hard-pressed finding an alternative with that level of experience at all levels, including the premier league.

Good news.

But also bad news as Steve’s wage increase to 200k per week means the only signings we’ll be able to make in the summer will be three very short number 10s with no Champ experience who’ve been playing in minor European leagues.

I hope he stays especially as it looks like Dunne will go, will mean we probably need one more centre half next season as back up rather than a full rebuild of the back 4

To get someone of his ability and experience is not cheap to replace

This is the key point. Since he joined he’s played twice the games of JCS and, during the time together, Morrison.

Going into next season with only Morrison and JCS, with Dunne leaving, and Edwards going back to S’oton, would be mad. Presume Fox’s contract is up too. Who plays centre half for the 35 games a season one of those two is injured. And which two play for the 15-20 odd they are both out?

Colback is a different proposition. We have more options there who are much more available. And I’d suggest a easier position to sign for then a reliable, starting quality centre half.

This article also hints that Norry considers us safe for Champ next season. Which means we now looking to next seasons squad.

After they lock in Cook, which means QPR will start looking around for those who will be out of contract and or in the final year for the bargain deals. And also the lower leagues, if they are under contract.

Saito is the obvious one we could offer a deal to, as he's supposedly out of contract. That's the next one we should be after.

No chance with Edwards as his wages will be way too big for us, let alone they bought him for £3m and will want that back at least if not more.

Dunne is going to SU and if they get promoted, Wilder will buy Chair as well. Paal is probably still off to Watford. And we should be letting Colback and Andersen go. Fox I like, but he's always injured so, he will be let go as well.

Thats a lot of wages off the books. Which should free up money for signing a RB and yet another big man up top. This time it will be someone who can hold the ball up and head it, unlike Celar.

I doubt Ashby will be signed as Wet Spam bought him for too much and has not really delivered anyway. And Yang is too error prone for Marti. Santos ... remember him? He will be sold for sure, along with EDB. With Lloyd loaned out.

Then there is our friend Richards; he, I believe, is in the last year of his contract. So, I expect him to be totally available, playing like a madman to get a new contract somewhere else. Its gonna be popcorn to watch it all play out.

Pros

- Experience and (actual) leadership - there's a difference between the two and Cook has shown himself to be a fantastic captain - almost every youth player has referenced conversations with him and you don't change mentality without representation from proven winners
- Position of need - we don't have enough CB's and that's before we lose Dunne, Fox and Ronnie. With JCS and Morrison injury issues, even Field got a game at CB this season...
- Continuity with players and bigger profiles - there's going to be huge turnover again this summer and the the less turbulence, esp in defence, is important
- A pre-Nourry profile - wherever you land with Nourry and his signings, the glaring omission has been proven Championship experience and we suffered for it this season, Cook may not have showed up on the data report, but his importance in lots of games the last few years has been huge and obvious for those present

Cons

- Expensive - exact salaries are conjecture but think it's fairly well accepted that Cook is one of our highest earners, if not the highest. High earners need high justification and to play every game, and I'm not 100% he makes our best 11
- Depreciation & Maintanence - we saw signs in the last third of the season that Cooks body is starting to show signs of wear and his performances suffered. He's not someone that relies on pace or athleticism, but older players need to be managed correctly, and this medical team haven't exactly inspired confidence in doing that...
- Succession planning - I think with the lack of depth this isn't as big a concern, but I do think Morrison has shown enough to be given the starting job full time, and at 22, is the kind of profile that shouldn't be on the bench behind a 33 year old. Surely Morrison was signed as a successor to Cook, and if all 3 are fit, you'd prefer to see a Morrison/JCS partnership develop.
Contract technicality - Maybe untrue or irrelevant, but it might not be ideal if this new contract was born from a clause in the contract rather than a decision from the club... Then again if a certain number of games triggered that clause, I guess we decided to allow it one way or another
