Agree on Glenn Roeder. I sat in the stand for the away game at Watford in the 1986 cup run. The entire Newcastle team were in the row behind me. GR was right behind me with John Bailey and Peter Beardsley on either side of him. All were up for a chat at half time. They cheered John Byrne’s goal as well.
a random selection of QPR players I've chatted to who couldn't have been nicer.....
Richard Langley John Hollins Clarke Carlisle Richard Pacquette Andy Impey Marcus Bean Ray Wilkins Tony Sealy Paul Furlong Simon Barker Richard Edghill Danny Shittu Tommy Smith Ian Holloway Kevin Gallen Marcus Bignot
Some others I've met that don't deserve a place on the list above..... Bobby Zamora Steve Slade Neil Ruddock
Clint Hill, bumped into him at Waterloo station just after he was released, had a longish chat with him, he always made time for the kids on match day as well.
favourite cheese mature Cheddar. FFS there is no such thing as the EPL
I see Gareth Ainsworth round where I live quite a bit and he does seem a top bloke. He's always happy to stop for a chat. One specific occasion was a few days after he got the sack from us and he was in a pub I was in with one of his mates. I'd had a few and sauntered over and he was nice as pie - didn't seem to mind me interrupting them and was happy to chat R's for a few minutes. Nice fella
This list would simply not be complete without mentioning Ollie. As has been mentioned by so many people so often, you'll struggle to find anyone who will happily give you his undivided attention for as long as you can handle it in such an all-encompassing manner without ever making you feel like he feels he's superior to you.
100% Ollie. We had that event at Thorpe Park to relaunch the Dennis the Menace kit, most players stayed for a few photos and were away. Ollie stayed for the rest of the day, could have played the "Bertie Big Potatoes" and avoided queues but happily joined the back of the zig-zag line and high fived/smiled for photos every time we passed each other.
Paul Smyth seems a good lade. Once had a long chat with Georges Santos who came across as a rally nice guy. Although not a player for us but Kenny Jackett was always willing to chat.
Met him that season when the R's came out to Dubai for warm weather training (2013?). Spent about an hour that afternoon after training had finished chatting and playing footy with the kids. I've some great photos of him running round the pitch with my youngest on his shoulders.
Polar opposite to Adel. Miserable f**ker that day he was.
Don't know him personally at all, but Angel Rangel came across as a really genuine guy when playing for us. Is he a coach nowadays? Always thought he would make a top coach..
To add to the list of 'opposites', it seems a good time to re-tell my Tony Currie story. Summer of 1981, Venables brought the lads over for a friendly v Athlone. I was 17, not a child but still a little starstruck. Clapped Tony Currie on on the back at the end and said 'great game Tony, well played'. Turned around and said, 'would you ever fook off'.
Eze - Someone who works at a food bank posted a story about him on a local Facebook group. They met him when he was dropping of a collection. They didn’t know he was a professional footballer until someone told them later, and they were just remarking on what a nice person he was and not like your stereotypical footballer.
Gary Bannister. Back in the 80s a bunch of us were waiting for his autograph. Then all of a sudden this big lad barges everyone out of the way like he was in a school dinner queue. Banno’s signing his autograph and then the pusher-innerer says can you sign it to me personnally my name and everything. Gary of the Wedge looked at him … there was a tense moment of silence and then he replied “If I’m gonna be doing that I’ll be here all day” Well we all cheered and the big lad got jostled out of the way. Gary was obviously thinking of the rest of us. And you know what we all got autographs. Gary Bannister … nicest QPR player ever - I kiss your corrective shoe.
We decided to make a weekend of it, but rather than stay in Blackpool, ended up in a hotel half way between there & Preston.
On the Saturday morning, my kids spotted the Rs squad...all sauntering into the hotel lobby. They were heading to have breakfast in a private room. My lad, 8 at the time, had his Rs top on, so we walked towards the room hoping just to get maybe a quick word, possibly one or two autographs.
A jobsworth hotel employee tried to shoo us away. Ollie spotted it, stepped in...then took us into the room, and took us round every single table, basically saying, these are the kind of people we're playing for today (telling them all how we travelled from Nottingham to W12 for home games as well as going away - cos of course he'd already found out our life story)...and every single player made time for a chat.
Kevin Gallen and Andy Thomson asked Jack if he had a name on the back of his shirt - as top scorers, I guess they thought odds on it would be one of them. When he turned round and they saw 'Bircham 8'...well to say Birch (sat next to them) absolutely rinsed the moment would be an understatement.
