Apparently NHS close to a red alert as stocks running low.
Any donors on here ? I used to say I don't do it cos there's too high a level of alcohol in my blood.
Now maybe I'm too old.
Think I'll apply though.

Me, only found out I was O Negative when I was tested for Covid 5 years ago so feel the need to give every 3 months.
Think I’m up to 20 times now.

My doc said I'm rhesus positive. “ Rhesus?” I said, “ they're monkies aren't they ?”

So, I’ve been trying get them to come to my work regularly for years but they always find a reason not too. Wont even visit.

We have a huge room that can accommodate 100 people at a time. They always seem to treat my efforts as a inconvenience.

800 people work in my building and all for the same company so easy to promote
internally.

On a personal note I used to donate regularly but had about three appointments in a row so just fell out the habit.

Will have another go.

I’ve been a regular donor since 1978 and had my 143rd donation at Portman Rd 6 weeks ago and the next one in another 6 weeks. It is harder to get an appointment these days and I think that puts a few people off, especially if they have to fit it in with work. And they don’t even give you a cuppa anymore.

143, that's fantastic, well done you.
Shame about the cup of tea and a biscuit.
I'll settle for a pint of Broadside….

You still get the biscuits but it’s not the same dunking them in orange cordial.

I donated blood and now that they can take platelet donations at my local hospital, I do that instead as you can't do both. There are only something like 10,000 platelet donors in the country, and they desperately need more, so if you have the option, it's definitely something to consider. You can donate as often as once every fortnight if you choose.

On the blood front, my mum had numerous blood transfusions over the years, which wouldn't have been possible without people giving blood, so I've always been very grateful to all those who donate.

I used to donate plasma before they stopped taking it because of mad cow disease back in the 90’s ,and I tried to donate platelets instead but my blood count wasn’t high enough so I went back to whole blood.

No tea, but a substantial upgrade on the old Family Circle tin nowadays - Club biscuits and even Mini Cheddars at the DW - you need to be booking a year ahead for appointments.

I would willingly give blood but can't due to receiving a blood transfusion during an operation in the early 2000s. Anyone who has had a transfusion since 1st Jan 1980 is disqualified.

Easiest place to donate is West End Donor Centre, Queen Margaret Street (2 mins from Oxford Circus). Open long hours, 7 days a week and all bookable on line. Very efficient every time I've been there - in and out in about 40 mins.

My previous wife needed a transfusion but I didn’t know what her type was.
I was with her at the end and held her hand as she said to me “be positive, be positive”.
What a lovely lady, even at her end she was still thinking of me……

My girlfriend got me into it and I feel bad that I didn't do it previously as I'm O negative. I always dread that I haven't got enough iron in my system since failing to donate on Boxing Day a few years ago (after two Christmas dinners, too much alcohol and not enough sleep). So, it's chicken liver, kale and iron supplements in the run-up these days.

I've been a regular donor for many years and have donated nearly 60 units. After 50 donations I received a letter from the transfusion service saying my donations would have helped over 100 people, and I've had a few personal thanks from people who have had cancer or premature babies who might not be here without blood donations, so that makes it all worthwhile. Not very difficult to get appointments where I live. I can usually book the next one for 3-4 months time a few days after donating and usually in and out within an hour.

Congratulations on your donations. They lay on a meal ceremony for when you get to 100 and a presentation of a gift too.

Apparently I’ve got what they call neo natal blood as well as being O Negative, which can be given to babies and babies still in the womb.
Giving blood is the only time in my life where lots of ladies come over to make a fuss of me!
Wish I’d known earlier that my blood was that useful as I’d have given much earlier.
They come to our local church hall every 3 months, easy to book and I’m back home within an hour of leaving which includes the walk too/from, so no real inconvenience at all.

There’s also a Blood Donation Centre in the Westfield Shopping Behemoth W12. Gwan add it to your match day experience. If enough of us donate maybe the blood-based karma will bring us many home wins, trophies, and long waited for glory. FFS, from three at the back to follically-challenged ex-England managers, we’ve tried everything else. And they had packets of Seabrooks Crisps last time I was there! What are you waiting for?*

*I suppose you’re waiting for the season to start. No need - get some pre-season donations in now.

Used to give plasma on a very regular basis, fascinated by watching the blood go up the tube, through the centrifuges and back into the arm a little colder, got to about 80/90 donations. Unfortunately, was diagnosed with hemochromatosis (too much iron in the blood), so now can’t. The treatment is what’s caked a venesection, where they take 425ml of blood every three months. The thing that really annoys me is that the blood is then thrown away! I can’t see why, with the correct treatment, it can’t be used for. For example, people with anaemia.

I liked giving plasma because you could do it more often and I could squeeze two cups of tea in while sitting upright in the chair watching the machine going round and round.
My nearest centre that does that now is in Cambridge and that’s too far to travel every 2 weeks, and you could only do 1 or the other so I chose whole blood donations again.
