"If Dixon Plays For England So Can I..." 18:26 - Jun 12 with 3495 viewsBrianMcCarthy

Right now (I know, I know..) I was thinking of Steve Hodge, which had me immediately humming the above Kerry Dixon chant.

Apart from the diminutive Forest and Rangers midfielder, and the expert penalty-taker from South-West London's Finest Racists, what other players of yesteryear were incredibly lucky to play for England?

Alan Hinton?

Yesteryear! Exactly.

I mean, we could go through Graham Taylor's reign and pick out a few but where's the fun at that? (Sinton played full-back for him?)

Let's say in the last century.

I mean, am I right that Hodge was a good club player but nothing better than that?

Dave Beasant? Really?

Edit - I'm not being nasty here, just curious. I support England and Ireland.

I always thought we sang that about Lee Dixon, who was keeping an actual Football Genius out of the England team in the 90’s.
Of course, in those pre-internet days, we didn’t know about the photos Dixon had of Taylor, (redacted) and the (very redacted) in the (even more redacted) house.

Well, it couldn’t have been any other reason!

1000% this. Unbelievable he has as many caps as he does - carried by a great Arsenal defence and George Graham.

There's loads though, Rickie Lambert (and half the strikers from the 2000's onwards) wouldn't have been allowed near an England team if they played in the 90s.

I remember when Sven started I thought it was a breath of fresh air to see a manager willing to pick outside the Man Utd, Arsenal, Spurs, Liverpool, boys club. I think, famous quiz question, Chris Powell got a cap in his first international in charge at Villa Park.

But over time I thought he completely degraded and destroyed what it meant to win an England cap and one of the reasons I gave Southgate so much leeway is he brought that back.

Evidence for the prosecution…
Jermaine Jenas has 21 England caps
Phil Neville 59 (!!!) (Gerry Francis got 12)
Emile Heskey 62 (7 goals, amazed it was that many tbh)
Danny Mills 19
Kieron Dyer 20
Zat Knight has 2 England caps
Paul Konchesky has 2 England caps
Anthony Gardner. Gavin McCann.

I definitely remember it at HQ when Kerry Dixon visited West London.

You're definitely right that it was used for Lee Dixon later on, though.

For me it was a couple of strikers... First David Nugent who's only contribution to England was smashing in a Defoe goal on the goal line and celebrating as if he scored a worldly..
The other who I personally thought was a great striker but never done anything in English colours was Jeff Astle..... only won 5 caps but was dreadful
Also another good player Peter Bonnetti..... never recovered from Mexico...

Tbf Francis missed a lot of time with a back injury when he was at his peak and there wasn't near as many international game as there are today. Heskey was a strange one; his team- mates loved him because he worked so hard but he certainly wasn't prolific. Assists (still hate that Yankee term) was not a thing back then but he must have had loads

A few from the 70s:

Colin Viljoen, Brian Talbot, Trevor Whymark - Ipswich
Mike Doyle - Man City
Phil Boyer - Norwich
Brian Greenhoff - Man Utd

I thought Phil Neal also got more caps than he should have especially after the emergence of Viv Anderson. Joe Corrigan although a good keeper and didn't win many caps for obvious reasons, still won nine times as many as Phil Parkes did.

Phil Neal is one I'd like to know more about.

Good at penos, neat, two-footed, but was he better than Viv Anderson???

I was only a kid but he seemed, maybe, average or boring to me?

That whole Liverpool defence was quite intriguing. Any one of them was only average on their own (Clemence better than Shilton- no way) Joey Jones, Tommy Smith, Emlyn Hughes, Larry Lloyd (,Clough made him into a top individual player) Chris Lawlor
Phil Neal. But the sum of the parts under Shankley/Paisley was virtually impregnable. It helped of course that their attacking prowess meant that they were not under sustained pressure during games.
But it did not necessarily translate onto the International stage. I remember an England manager picking the entire (eligible) Liverpool team. I think it was Ian Callaghan's only cap. I think it was against Switzerland but I am certain it was a dire 0-0 draw. So I guess (with the exception of Kevin Keegan) you could add that entire Liverpool team to your list.

Ahh good old Geoff Thomas and his much mocked shot against France.

There was also a bloke around for a while doing a really poor impersonation of John Barnes.

An old Brian Clough quote about Larry Lloyd "he made two appearances for England at once, his first and his last".
