Quality players who rarely featured for England 13:51 - Jun 13 with 1910 views | Myke | As an 'antidote' to Brian's thread, how about some top players (again from back in the day) who barely got capped for England. Going to start the ball rolling with Hector, Bowles, George and Worthington [Post edited 13 Jun 13:54]

Quality players who rarely featured for England on 14:06 - Jun 13 with 1120 views | Tonto | The obsession with Lampard and Gerrard left us too open to attack. Many ex players have said Micheal Carrick should have played more. Yes he got 37 cpas but that is dwarfed by the other two. Gerry Francis only got 12 caps. Les Ferdinand deserved more caps too. But there was a lot of competition then.

Quality players who rarely featured for England on 14:40 - Jun 13 with 1031 views | 7374Ranger | Bannister would have been selected but was not edible having won an U21 cap for Wales. The rules have correctly been changed now to allow players to change countries ad the likes of Rice and Zaha have done. I also think that Le Tissier should have been a regular in the England squad. Hoddle as manager treated him terribly just before the 98 World Cup. He selected Le Tissier for a B team to play and impress just before naming the final squad. He played and scored a hat-trick, but was still omitted from the squad. We could have done with him in the penalty shootout loss against Argentina (he rarely, if ever, missed. Phil Parkes would surely have won more than 1 if he didn't have to compete against Shilton & Clemence.

"Bannister would have been selected but was not edible having won an U21 cap for Wales" Where have you got that from? Bannister's wiki entry (I know...) says he played once for the England U21s in 1982. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gary_Bannister Surely if he 'd represented Wales at any level, then back in the mid 80s they'd have been all over him picking him for the Wales senior team given how few top division players they had back then? I mentioned Bowles in my intro, but Marsh is a good shout. Currie another man who didn't win too many caps. I think 'flamboyant' players struggled for International recognition back in the day. I deliberately said 'rarely' rather than 'never" as I think they are different things. A player who picked up a couple of caps but then got left out (like Hector or Le Tiss) were obviously considered at one point and then failed to impress or whatever. Players that were overlooked completely or just unlucky (Austin and Vardy were both on the bench for that end of season game Vardy got on Austin didn't) or didn't play for a 'glamorous' club.

Barker probably would have got a cap in 1990 in one of the friendlies before the World Cup and might have been an outsider for the World Cup squad had he not broke his leg shortly after the Liverpool FA Cup games. He was in great form and with his club manager being Bobby Robson's number 2 at the time...
