Kolli 10:23 - Jul 1 with 4316 viewsWestbourneR

Seeing a fair few negative assessments of him over this close season (Gallen & Dave Mc + several posters on here) saying he's either not good enough or should go on loan to L1.

I'm totally perplexed by it.

The guy is a rare gem. For me, the reason he's special is his back to goal game. It's something you don't get very often in a young player.

Not only does he have a powerful strike, good feet and composure - he is also strong and relishes the battle and hold up stuff. He's also tall and good in the air.

So yeah - he's not a 10, he's not a winger (not quick enough) - he's a striker. His stats speak for themselves, when he plays, one game in every two he tended to make something happen with an assist or goal.

Stats aside, even just with the naked eye, you can just see he has what it takes. Best youth prospect at this club since Eze IMO.

I don't get why people are down on him. He's just 20 years old and straight out of our youth team!

This I would take with a pinch of salt mind.

I really like him and his stats are pretty impressive for goal involvements etc!

I think there is a mistrust that he wants out, not helped by some of the narrative that supposedly his dad has said.

He’s 20 years old, been here since he was 8, has significant natural talent, knows where the goal is, and has an incredible haircut. What’s not to like? 😀

I think maybe it’s because we haven’t really found his best position yet.
He’s unlucky that we have so many ‘10’s’, so probably hasn’t been given the run he needs / deserved in that role . He needs a run of games in 1 position which is potentially where a loan for 6 months could really help . But that’s the clubs / managements fault not his particularly.
I understand bits of criticism around his overall game play and he certainly has a lot to learn, with interfering family members too, but Dave Mc’s ‘aggressive lunge, on him on the All New Nourry Appreciation Show, was completely over the top, on what is essentially still a teenager (I think he just turned 20 but I could be wrong).

Ha ha that Barnet would have to go if I was head coach 😆

why? He's been at the club since 8 and signed a new contract this year?

I'm not seeing much negativity but I don't trawl the web too much.

I've been on the record for ages now on my thoughts this kid will go places.
Glad he's got bags of self confidence; maybe it's that which some misinterpret as arrogance and that gives them a downer?
In terms of what I've been told by people who know the family is that they are great people and Rayan is a really good kid.
That'll do for me.

In terms of his ability I think it's all there for people to see.
He's got great quick feet and battles hard.
Probably a fair bit to learn in the game, especially defensive work, but if you're not playing then you're not learning. Which leads me onto.... injuries. His recent record with fitness is a concern but not uncommon in young un's growing into themselves.

I hope he has a great season with us bagging goals and assists which will in turn lead to a big move for him as he'll deserve it.

Cherish and enjoy life.... this ain't no dress rehearsal

Yes it was an odd assessment on that podcast. Like they knew something we don't? Certainly from a talent point of view he has everything we need as a young player coming through. He's 20 so I think he is doing fine and will hopefully push on again this season.

Never knowingly right.

I think he has struggled a bit as a lone striker and that may be a reason for criticism from some.

I think he is talented and is best suited as a number one 10. The problem is the squad has a few others competing for that position in Chair, Dembele and maybe even Madsen if he can reproduce his end of season form.

I like him, big season for him though. Needs a good injury free run in the side to show what he can do.

Personally, I see him more as a striker.

I think he is a better lone striker than Celar but not better than Frey.

If we play two up front then I would play Frey or Kolli with Celar or Kelman.

That I think maybe the crux of it... he will in my mind be behind Frey, Celar and now Kelman, and I can't see him in that 10 role behind Chair, Dembele Madsen, or even possibly Morgan or Vine

Big year for the lad, and I agree a loan might be the making of him..

But I like his attitude and there is a bit about him also.

My dream of him (see separate thread) tells me all I need to know about his breakthrough credentials. That came straight from the unconscious (aka the realm of the gods), and I hope this season we'll both be going places.

Don't see how when it's pouring the amount of rain his hair must hold doesn't slow him down or put him off balance.

It's an interesting debate regarding his position. I've always wanted to see him on the left, or in the 10. Feel he is completely wasted up top, particularly a number of times last season running graveyard shifts barely getting a touch of the ball which is a shame considering his talent.

I think of his assists at Cardiff H and West Brom H, cutting in from the left he puts in some great deliveries. With Saito gone I think there's some minutes in that position for him next season

I like him but need to find his best position and need to keep him fit. I wouldn't be surprised if he ended up being sold this window

While I agree with this - I don't believe it's a factor in why Dave Mc and Gallen say they don't rate him.

Does anyone have an idea where the doubts about Kolli come from?

Is it secretly his injury record, is it the ungainly gait that you've referred to Clive?

All reminds of a player - ah yeah Jordan Henderson - Alex Ferguson once revealed he didn't sign Henderson because of his peculiar gait. He said he regretted it.

I don't know mate, we'd have to ask them I guess.
Lad of that age could still just be growing pains, growing into his body/frame etc, but it is a concern that he's been a first team player two seasons and has had four (?) different three-month injuries all very similar - hamstrings, groins etc.
Needs the sort of summer Kelman had a year ago. Get yourself absolutely mega fit, best shape of your life, blistering summer and hit the ground running in August.

I'm like you, I like what I've seen so far. Our win percentage last year went from around 30% average to nearly 50% when he was in the team. He's got a great final ball on him and the tracking back and defensive cover in the Sunderland game on the last day showed a marked improvement on the start of the season against West Brom where the general consensus was nice with the ball but defensive liability.

Ah ok I see, I'd missed that his injuries spanned two seasons and were recurring issues.

And never really paid proper attention to his defensive work - but he looked to press the backline with pace and aggression to me

Tbh the more I listen to Gallen the more I'm glad this club has more qualified people in the room, not just Ollie's old boys. Sorry I know he's a club legend.

So for you is Kolli a 10 or a striker? I personally think his physicality and back to goal game would be wasted at 10.

Btw (not that you or anyone else would've noticed or cared) but I couldn't log into the site for over two years - denying the world my searing insight. But I've just changed web browser and it's all sorted. Makes me feel extra dim. In the meantime have been reading the board and listening to Patreon - still really appreciate the quality content, thank you.

id say he and lloyd both need 6 months being roughed up in a lower league side,
kolli dosnt seem to be able to stay fit for any periods of time , could be growing pains could be poor prep before games ,

id see him behind a big forward to be honest not sure hes got it in him to go toe to toe with a hulking centre back and hasnt got the pace to out run one , with the players we have in the swuad this season unless they think hes a out and out striekr hes prob 5th in line as a starter in that role behind a striker , is that enough for him ?

I'm not convinced by him.

To my eyes he is a player with lots of good attributes, but doesn't really excel in any of them. I have a horrible feeling there will always be a player who is quicker (Poku), physically stronger (Frey), harder working (Smyth), more creative (Chair).
I just can't seem him being a starter unless we go two up top, in which case he would be a good foil next to Frey.

If a really sexy bid came in I'd let him go (with % sell on of course).
