We are obviously planning to hang around in the championship

Poll: Has the Ross Stewart deal already paid off as Nick says?

I’m pretty certain that last season we conceded more goals when he was out of the team than when he was in it.

He’s a proven Championship player and let’s face it that’s where we are at so a contract extension isn’t the end of the world surely ?

Poll: Where will we finish in the upcoming season?

To be fair he is dedicated to saints, seems very professional and wants the best for the club.
Problem is he's just not good enough and giving him another 3 years seems crazy.

He maybe mediocre but who made more defensive errors last season. 20m THB or 500k Stephens?

When we played in the Championship in 23/24... and I have probably said this a few times , we averaged over 2 pts a game when Stephens played and less when he didn't.

Personally I like Saints winning...hence I prefer players that contribute to wins .

Seems very professional getting sent off for schoolgirl hair pulling and calling a referee a c*nt.

Personally I can't be bothered even commenting on the Skack Jack contract extension.
But I thought we were trying freshen up the squad with some new blood, just hope that he's relieved of his club captaincy, just because he's been with us as long as we can remember doesn't mean that he's a good captain / example.
He is not my idea of a good captain.

Stephens is not proven at Championship level. When loaned out he became a bench warmer and let's not forget how many goals we conceded in the 23/24 season.(only 2 less than Birmingham who got relegated).

This, together with his petulant attitude on the pitch with unnecessary cards, didn't exactly demonstrate leadership qualities.

I don't have a problem with it at all and think some fans underestimate the importance of having a few "club men" around the place. Our lack of experience and leaders over the last few years has been telling and I think it's essential to have players like Stephens in and around the squad.

I think number of goals conceded was more to do with Martins tactics most of the season, often leaving our back four exposed with lack of cover, when losing the ball in the opponents half

I find myself questioning myself on this, as I do agree with a lot of what you say.

We do have some young CB's in the squad, and they are going to need a wise head around them.

I just question whether he is that wise head, given his moronic sendings-off last season and erratic defending over the years.

I agree with what you are saying here Pat, I could see the wisdom in keeping Jack on for another season, perhaps adjusting his role to Club Captain rather than Team Captain, he seems well liked and can help the youngsters, but 3 years is just plain daft.

He may well be well liked and a popular figure, but on the pitch he is not a leader of men, he has averaged about 19 games a season since his League debut in January 2017 at the age of 24, a Team Captain needs to be a regular in the side because of this ability, not because as under Russell Martin he was Captain so had to play.

No a 1 year contract would be plain daft. Why do you want to pay him higher wages than we have to if we offer him 3 years and then have his contract run out in 12 months?

He'll now be on championship wages - if not that would also be plain daft. So if we're promoted we sell him and there will be buyers at that wage rate, if we don't get promotion we keep him and avoid having to pay a transfer fee for a different championship CB.
