Seems like pretty sound business to me. If you'd said last year we would sell him for 1 million this summer, I think we would have laughed..
If he stayed, we would have to offer him a new better contract - bigger wages and 3/4 years, which if he then reverts to not scoring goals would be a problem.
This way, the only negative would be if he really has become a goal machine, in which case, he will get snapped up by a bigger fish, and we get another chunk..
if Burrell now gets similar or more goals than Kelman this season, it will have to be seen as great business.

And Chair had done pretty well in 250 appearances for us since his return!

Something tells me Chair is going to have a great season for us he looks up for it after those few pre season games.
Not just the injuries last year but he had that serious legal issue hanging over his head and that must have effected his confidence and energy/attitude.
If we can ger our strikers scoring it will take defenders away from Chair and he could really hit the ground running with lots of long range goals hopefully

Hope he does well at Charlton, never really clicked at QPR and we got a decent fee for him. We move on.

Well in the event he does score 20 goals, if we're stuck in a relegation battle there would have been some worth in having somebody that could do that.

It still doesn't change the factors that influenced the decision because the future is unknown. The ability to sell Kelman and sign Burrell for a net gain was a known; right now, what's the likely marginal difference between Kelman and Burrell?

And you're ignoring the crucial factor - he didn't want to play for us. So we could have been stuck in a relegation battle with Kelman not featuring, no transfer fee receipt and no Burrell.

It's not just the right decision, it's the only rational decision.

Poll: QPR to finish 7th or Brentford to drop out of the top 6?

I'm not Mystic Meg, no. I saw him play for Orient a couple of times during his first loan and thought he looked a bit tubby, needed two chances to score, that that level was his limit - and that Smyth was much better in that team.

Saw him during his second loan, and he was transformed. Stronger, fitter, great finisher.

So no, not Mystic Meg. But also not in footballer development, part of a huge expensively assembled staff employed to judge who should be QPR's strikers and who decide to replace Lyndon Dykes and Sinclair Armstrong with Zan Celar and nobody else, while sending Kelman out to have a breakout season elsewhere.

Let's hope they have judged this better. As JD1 says, we'll know very quickly.

Yes but he had his break out season because he was playing regularly. He only scored 4 goals in his first 20 matches. Playing regularly made him a better, fitter, stronger player which helped him in the latter part of the season - surely the point of loan spells. Players all say you can't beat match fitness. There's no guarantee he'd have had a breakout season at LR because he wouldn't have got 20 matches to get it right.

Celar being the wrong choice is irrelevant to Kelman going out on loan. In fact because it made us £3 million I'd say that's evidence of the hugely expensively assembled staff getting it right with Kelman at least.

Our strategy is clearly future focused. We're trying to get a younger squad with potential so we can improve over time. Banking £2 million net in the Kelman for Burrell swap means money can be invested elsewhere which we need desperately. We've also added pace to the squad. Not all the decisions are going to be right but Kelman doesn't seem one of them at this stage.

I think this is because we loaned him out last season and he wanted to stay... Why would you sign a new contract.

I agree its the right thing to do but I sincerely think we will regret him leaving

Tbh, i would probably have felt the same if I had been at the club as l9ng as he had and continued to be loaned out.

QPR didn't even recall him in January when we had no senior striker fit and loaned in Yang instead. Kelman would have done a better job than Lloyd and then later on Dembele or Smith as the lone striker.

You can’t recall anymore unless both parties agree to it and I highly doubt Orient would’ve agreed to let him go back

Did Kelman make the most of his opportunities here ?
Had a great season in L1, good for him. We've profited financially from it. We move on.
Yeh in hindsight we probably had a better player, right under our noses then what we currently have now up front, and yes ,questions should be asked. But i don't think this is the worst decision the club has made.
Jimmy Dunne is staying so it cant be that bad at the club. Some players just dont gel with a club for whatever reason.

Not sure I get all of the enthusiasm today on here about Kelman exit. I'm really dissapointed, as I was very much looking forward to seeing him play for us this season. The replacement looks inferior on paper.
Claiming Nourry has done "great business" - hmm. No, great business would have been getting him to sign a longer contract sooner, seeing him do well for us this season, and then getting a decent sized fee. £3M is peanuts. Folks saying he wanted to leave - we don't know that - we're all in the dark. It says he refused to sign, maybe he was told he wasn't first choice, or offered a shite extension? Yep, we don't know.

We will see what happens but I feel a bit gutted. Here we are desperate for a striker who can bag goals and just let one go for the same price as that useless fecker Celar

I'm Disappointed he's gone. Anyone who had the minerals to score that freely at Leyton Orient must have had the inherent DNA of a natural finisher, IMHO he only ever had a run with us as a bit part sub in a shit team with wingers and a midfield about as supportive as Max Clifford in a paternity case.

Perhaps the club never had a choice in his departure. Good Money 3 million.

Good luck Charlie in your future Career. I think we may live to regret this.

"No, great business would have been getting him to sign a longer contract sooner...."

Yes, but for every 'Kelman should have been signed up for longer' there is a 'why have we given Nico Travelman (©LFW) a feckin 5 year deal?'

"Remember to listen to me but look at her. Don't get it the wrong way round. That would be hideous."

I’m really not looking forward to a season of “Kelman just scored for Charlton” messages on here

He’s gone

We’ve moved on swiftly to new player(s) to fill his boots and my focus will be our new bobsleigh team up top

I hope Charlie is as big a success for Charlton as Jaffa Cake Bonne was for us

Cherish and enjoy life.... this ain't no dress rehearsal

He was loaned out because he joined as an 18 year, and is still only 23 even now. Writing him off in his younger years is a fools errand. He has been loaned out to develop, and develop he did.

You draw attention to previous regimes as to why he doesn’t want to stay; but the point is - this is a fabled NEW regime. So why doesn’t he want to stay? New training ground, great facilities, alleged great vision that all players are buying into, new CEO/DOF.

And the fact it’s Charlton is exactly my point. It’s NOT a step up. Thus, it looks even worse that he doesn’t want to stay under the new regime. So, there are multiple ways to view this transfer.

And the idea that this is great business will be placed under immediate scrutiny. Because he is playing in our division this season, and QPR could quickly have egg on their face. Right now, it looks rosy. But time will tell if this is a good deal or not.

I think you're twisting my words.

He was rarely picked by ANY manager in 4 seasons. He was sent out on loan EVERY year under both LF and CN. A bit of a pattern emerging, regardless of old or new regime.

We just got £3.5m for a striker who didn't want to stay and who has scored ZERO goals for us. We should be cock-a-hoop.

Poll: How is Nourry cooking so far ? 🤣

You keep banging on about how he scored zero goals, whilst conveniently ignoring the fact he was given a paltry FOUR starts. When he was given regular game time, he consistently improved. Emphatically so, with 27 goals last season.

We’ve been crying out for a striker that can finish for years. Football is not about the past, and especially so, when a player is developing aged 18,19,20,21. It’s what they do in the now, and Kelman has excelled, and is still only 23.

All those STILL writing him off as league 1 are the same types bigging up Mbengue and Poku. It’s selective thinking. No doubt because it’s the same folk who insisted Kelman was crap in the first place, and were made to look a bit silly last season. So the only thing left is to say “oh but he’ll be crap in the championship”.

But if Kelman continues to develop in the champ, 3m will quickly look a very bad deal indeed.

Why was he given just four starts?

Because he wasn’t deemed good enough… yet? Because he was literally 18,19,20 initially with us, and then spent the last 3 seasons on loan?

It’s clear what you are getting at. That he was dog shite. Pretty black and white thinking, because it doesn’t factor in his young age, or development progress.

The main point continuously being missed - is it’s not really about what Charlie Kelman did in the past, but what he is doing now. That’s called football development. People are still happy to judge Kelman based on the past, and a grand total of 4 starts. Either way, we’ll be finding out exactly how he fares at championship level this season.

I've seen it be reported that Southend Utd will be getting £750k from this transfer so our cut will be £3m minus whatever the actual figure is they do get.

I hope we've got a suitable sell on ourselves as if he does tear it up in this league he won't be in it for very long and will move for big money.
