Queen Adelaide 21:28 - Aug 2 with 4019 views | Noelmc | On the way to the game today I was sad to see the Adelaide all boarded up. For years it was my dad's local and always brought back good memories of growing up in the Bush. Does anyone know what's happening with it? In the current climate I'd fear it's likely to end up as flats, like so many closed pubs.
Queen Adelaide on 21:40 - Aug 2 with 3926 views | colinallcars | Been shut a while. We have generations coming along that don't get it down their necks like us old 'uns. I think pubs will be few and far between before long. PS, sorry to be such a Jeremiah, but if you'd told my dad that there'd be pubs that don't open on Monday or lunchtimes, he'd have thought you were bonkers. My mate's local - the Cumberland in North End Rd doesn't open 'til 4 pm on Saturday. FFS. [Post edited 2 Aug 21:58]

Queen Adelaide on 21:55 - Aug 2 with 3829 views | ted_hendrix | We used to meet up In the Adelaide In years gone by, Saturday 2.00pm outside would be blokes all drinking on the pavement because the pub was full. By coincidence I was driving on the A4 through Thatcham for the first time In years last Wednesday and I couldn't help but notice that all the of the pubs were shut and boarded up. Sign of the time I suppose, no problem for me as I'm teetotal but all the same a sad sight to see but not uncommon anymore.

Otoh, if you told your son that in your dad's time, pubs had to close at 2pm (2.30?) for four hours in the afternoon - by law - he'd think you're bonkers. All that said, you're absolutely correct - the pub culture in this country is dying and I really think we're the worse for it. [Post edited 2 Aug 22:23]

Well it's got a rental board outside it now which it didn't have last week, so hopefully still a chance it stays a pub. Nightmare time in London for pubs and restaurants right now.

Was it not the British Queen before changing name, or am I imagining that?

No, the British Queen was just a bit further down Uxbridge Road, on the corner of Thorpebank Road. Became The Pocket Watch and now called The Hawthorn.

I get the cost of trading in London but they don't help themselves do they. Our golf club bar is run 'not for profit' for the benefit of the members and a round of 4 pints with crisps/nuts is under £10.

At least you knew when they were open. These days, some shut early if not busy and you turn up hoping they'll be open.

This is one reason. I also think that the change in the licensing law that allowed shops to sell alcohol meant supermarkets could sell cheap drinks that undercut pubs. Throw in Covid and the drop in pub culture was complete. Pubs will need to change and maybe open as coffee shops/cafes during day and as traditional pubs for the weekend.

It's the complete change in prices from place to place for me. I know fuller's pubs are high end these days, but go to Ryan's bar on Northfields avenue, £5.60 for Camden Hells, £5.50 for staropramen, or 2 min walk away the Plough, almost £8 for one of their premium lagers. Pretty much never go there now. [Post edited 4 Aug 11:23]

I would never dream of telling someone where to drink and depending which part of Hillingdon you hail from but the British Legion on the Uxbridge Road is £4 a pint for Staropramen and Neck oil, membership is about £25 a year (£12 for RBL, £8 for Hillingdon branch and £5 for the door fob).

Cricket club on Coney Green is sensible. Mark (QPR) Perry is a club member.

Queen Adelaide on 18:24 - Aug 4 with 830 views | Superhoops2808 | Always used to meet at the Adelaide as you could have a smoke outside in the undercover bit, had some great memories there. The Ram (remember him) walking along with a bin over his head, used to meet Bazwot (another blast from the past on this forum) and getting so drunk in there the day we got promoted despite losing to Leeds Apart from their amazing scotch eggs in The Adelaide, the best thing was the kebab shop on the opposite corner. They did doner kebabs in Naan Bread and they were the best kebabs ever.

Even if you're not interested in the game, you want to get yourself along to Hayes Cricket Club (probably not too far?) They've a great social club, with prices to match. (Know the couple who basically run it - top people)

Queen Adelaide on 08:18 - Aug 5 with 461 views | JezHoops | A lot of pubs around the area used to rely on the huge boost during the season from the football. The dearth of 3pm ko over the last three seasons has hit them hard.
