Can't fault your optimism.

For me, I'm going to try to wait to see how the team and our latest managerial gamble perform in the league before forming a judgment about how good or strong we are.

This wasnt an article about how good the manager is or isnt, it was about comparing the quality of the squad now against that of two years ago, so you can give an opinion on whether on paper the squad is as strong or weaker compared with two years ago.

Then when the season starts you will be able to judge Will Still against Russell martin

Prefer to wait and see a bit before passing judgement in either the manager, the squad or anything. We are traditionally slow starters to a season irrespective of the manager and squad (or opposition).

We may have a stronger squad (on paper) than some of the opposition but other teams will have developed their squads as well. Other teams will be weaker on paper. But, football is not played on paper.

On paper we have a squad that should be bare minimum top 6.

As club if our stature and we're financially stable with the parachute payments we should be top 2.

Last time in the Championship we had not only KWP but Che Adams , Aribo ( likely leaving) , Stuart Armstrong , THB (possibly leaving and Bednarek .

These are big misses and so far we added 2 prospects but not proven players.

We only finished 4th last time around on 87 points on what's regarded as a 3 horse race.

This time we'll likely need 90 plus points . We need to improve alot and we need to bring 2 or 3 high quality proven players , otherwise we risk getting overtaken by the likes of Brum, Ipswich , Sheff Utd.

In the Premier league we stood still and allowed Palace , Brentford, Brighton , Bournemouth to overtake us.
I hope our owners show enough ambition to not allow this to happen in the Championship .

I said I was waiting before judging the manager and the team too.

I'm not really interested in the strength of the squad 'on paper' - it's not Top Trumps.

Let's see if this manager can turn the players he has at the end of the window into a winning team. That's the only question that matters.

Nail on head felly.

Only thing to add is that with Bazunu in goal for a complete season we won’t get promoted either automatically or through the playoffs.

The beauty of football is that no one knows. We might run away with it by 10 points, we might be absolutely rubbish.

I would expect us to be comfortably top 6 from the off but I'm interested to see if we have shaken off last season. Getting thrashed every week has an effect and losing became a habit.

Still seems to be highly regarded so it will be interested to see what he's got. Some strange decisions so far but I certainly don't think we can make any judgements until 10 or 12 games. We don't even know what our first 11 will look like - and nor does he.
As for players I do see both Dibling and MF leaving which gives certain fans a stick to beat the club with. We should know by now, if someone comes knocking and offers big money those players suddenly don't want to be here.
But overall I predict top 4 with a decent chance at automatics.

Sorry Nick, most of that is optimistic tosh. For all his faults, Bednarek is streets ahead of JS, who is virtually guaranteed to give the opposition at least one golden chance per game. Time will tell of course. At least we don’t have the possession buffoon in charge this time around.

I expect there are some Rangers forums that were predicting that they were stronger going into this season. It doesn’t make me any happier to see exactly the same fault lines appearing there that we all know so well.

Like most have said, it's a big "don't know yet". I am not convinced from what I have seen so far. We just about beat Eastleigh and it was very poor. The other friendlies have been very average. The final 20 minutes against Brighton has given us all hope, and that is what we want to see but why did it take so long to get going? Who knows how many times we might start like that again.

We really need to get some quality in, particularly in midfield. We don't create nowhere near enough opportunities and we are far too passive most of time. But it's early days. So many unknowns in terms of who we manage to bring in, that's if we manage it all. Will all the money that we bring in from selling Dibling and Fernandez be reinvested into the team? Who Knows.

Classic Nick Click bait. The team is a lot weaker now.

Goalkeepers
How can you say Baz is a better keeper than last time we were in the championship. Hes had a long term injury and had a terrible loan. Im not sure how that makes him better. Like wise Mccarthy is a couple years older and slower.

Defence
KWP, Bednerek and THB start over anyone we have in the squad now. Manning is no better or worse.

Midfield
Centre midfield is on par, if we lost airbo i would then say weaker. We also had Rothwell for the 2nd half of the season.
Wide players Sulemana, Fraser, Stu Armstrong, Brook and Edozie 2 years ago. Now an older Fraser, Robinson and thats it. A lot weaker.

Forwards - Armston, Adams Mara - Hard to argue we are not stronger now. Although we dont have an Adams and Armstong might not be the same player after last season.

Poll: Has the Ross Stewart deal already paid off as Nick says?

Agree with this, we could be far weaker squad wise than the squad that started our last season in the championship.

It will be interesting to compare the playoff final squad to the squad we will have come September.

Pompey’s pre-season saw six wins and a draw from seven matches, with 17 goals scored and none conceded. That included a 1-0 victory over Dutch top-flight outfit PEC Zwolle.

As always, will be interesting to see if pre-season friendlies mean something... anything.
