Who did you nearly support…? 08:22 - Aug 10 with 2846 views | thame_hoops | I saw GroveR’s comment about nearly supporting Spurs on another thread, and it got me wondering if anyone else had flirtations with other clubs before choosing Rangers? As an 8year-old myself at school in Oxfordshire, my best mate was a West Ham fan, they had McAvennie & Cottee at the time, so I started to like them. Also Alan Devonshire parents lived opposite my Nan in Perivale so I would get some West Ham swag from him including VHS tapes of the season. After a couple trips to Upton Park, my Dad (RIP) realised I was potentially going to support West Ham so he took me down the Rangers for the first time, he was a lifelong fan, from Fulham originally (Wardo Avenue) I do remember West Ham getting relegated in the late 80s, I think, and thanking my lucky stars for choosing Rangers ha ha ha
Who did you nearly support…? on 08:32 - Aug 10 with 1608 views | mikeygunn | I had pictures with me wearing a Leicester City shirt, my mum, dad, and oldest brother supports them. I got the panini sticker book and decided QPR were more my thing. I did go and watch them a fair bit growing up and cheered them on, but was never close to switching once I’d made the commitment to the hoops.
Who did you nearly support…? on 08:35 - Aug 10 with 1585 views | GaryBannister86 | Good question. I think I was really lucky (?) in that Dad made sure I was QPR before I was even aware that there may possibly be a choice. As such never flirted with anyone else, and to be honest just have total disregard for every other football club and always will. Even yesterday pre-match in Westfields I was looking at people with Arsenal and Chelsea shirts on and, even as a 51 year old, immediately decided they were bad 'uns. Bit embarrassing really, but I am what I am. Similarly, I gave my son no choice. None whatsoever. QPR bibs do that from birth.

Pretty much a copy and paste for me!
Who did you nearly support…? on 09:00 - Aug 10 with 1508 views | bosh67 | Good thread. The first picture of me is in a Manchester City top. My dad's family came down to London from Manchester. We had family working in the office at QPR and we got tickets when I was 5. I think we beat Aston Villa that day and from that point on we were hoops. In hindsight...

My dad took me to Chelsea for my first ever game back in the 60s and went with him a few times but then he took me to Brentford who were then in the 4 th division.Stayed with Brentford now 60 odd years on don’t regret it one bit.Have many life long friends who are still with us and have travelled to well over 100 grounds.Very proud of where we have got to and how we done it but those years in the lower leagues, although the football for most of the time was dire they were the best days for me as a fan.
Who did you nearly support…? on 09:34 - Aug 10 with 1404 views | hubble | Even though I first saw Rangers in the 74/75 season, my young head was turned by a visit to Old Trafford that same season, and I decided to 'support' them instead. Fortunately my head was turned back in the right direction several years later, although it did mean I missed the 75/76 season..... oops.

Who did you nearly support…? on 09:50 - Aug 10 with 1349 views | silky | Man Utd. It was only because I genuinely loved watching Peter Schmeichel. But those Hoops lead by Wilkins and Ferdinand with Bards and Wilson won me over. Man to have full backs like those today eh?

Like several on here. No choice. Thanks Dad…and my two sons the same. My tiny grandson could be tricky as his dad supports Liverpool, but in all honesty he’s much more passionate about Bath Rugby so I’ve got a chance!

Being born in Battersea, the SW6 filth would’ve been the natural choice, but luckily we moved out to leafy Roehampton before I started going to watch football. I also did a project at primary school about Stoke city for some reason.I think it was just after they won the league cup against the same filth back in 1972.
Who did you nearly support…? on 10:45 - Aug 10 with 1237 views | QPunkR | Only ever been the Rs for me. However, the dad of my brother's mate got the wrong end of the stick and bought my brother a Glasgow Rangers shirt for his birthday once

Who did you nearly support…? on 10:48 - Aug 10 with 1244 views | SimonJames | I came back from Canada in 1976, and decided that I should support a team that was based near to where I was born - the old St George's Hospital at Hyde Park Corner. The nearest two teams where the Scum and Foolham. I pondered these for a while... and then I saw Stan Bowles playing. Decision made!

Who did you nearly support…? on 11:16 - Aug 10 with 1196 views | BristolR | Was born in Clapton so midway between Arse and Orient… Then moved to Thamesmead, close to both Charlton and West Ham…my Dad took me to see West Ham first of all although he was Rangers…prob due to proximity. Strong memories of listening to the radiogram with him when we got beat at Norwich in 1976…guess that was it then, second game season after vs Liverpool, was hooked! Also helped by seeing Ronnie Corbett peering over the steering wheel of his sky blue Rolls Royce outside White City station!!
Who did you nearly support…? on 11:19 - Aug 10 with 1184 views | SydneyRs | Arsenal. Had an Arsenal sports bag when I was about 6. Seemed like every Saturday my dad came home and said they'd lost which I got a bit sick of. Also QPR were just coming off the 76 season, were the local team, seemingly half the school supported them and of course had and still have the coolest kit in the league. Could have seen league titles and cup wins but went for shit but local.
Who did you nearly support…? on 11:21 - Aug 10 with 1184 views | ozexile | My Nan grew up in Highbury before the war and use to support Arsenal. After the war she moved to East Acton, had my Dad and here we are. She still supported Arsenal up to her passing in the late 90's.
Who did you nearly support…? on 11:29 - Aug 10 with 1163 views | qpr_1968 | no choice either... family all lived in ladbroke grove going back before the two wars.... when it was a working mans game you all walked to your local ground.... i've made sure all my kids, grandkids, nephews and nieces supported qpr by taking them through thick and thin from their early ages.... it must have worked, because there is'nt one non qpr fan in our extended family. call that luck if you want.....or sheer perceverance.

Strangely similar for me too 😂. Sorry to say number 2 son is a Forest fan but at least I stopped him supporting Chelsea or Liverpool.
Who did you nearly support…? on 12:10 - Aug 10 with 1092 views | loftboy | Westham, was taken there a lot as a kid as my relatives on my mums side lived there, my dad didn’t like them so made sure Westham was at home when she wanted to visit.

Who did you nearly support…? on 12:20 - Aug 10 with 1075 views | MrSheen | I was an armchair Leeds fan in the 70s, but when my mum allowed me to go to games on my own from 1979, I first used to go to Brentford with some of my school friends (in Ealing). I loved the games but it was a real shag to get there from Dollis Hill so I tagged along to Loftus Road with some Rangers supporters and it very quickly became home. Still have a soft spot for Brentford, despite how they feel about us.

Haha an old girlfriend got me a Glasgow rangers mug from sports direct 10 years ago. I loved that mug as it made me laugh each time I saw it.
Who did you nearly support…? on 12:39 - Aug 10 with 1007 views | LongsufferingR | In the 70s I used to get Shoot magazine and loved the league ladders which I would update after every game. I had a favourite team in each division for reasons like names, colours etc that were a bit different to most. My teams were Arsenal, QPR, Villa and Hereford in divs 1-4. When we got promoted in 1973 I had a decision to make, and as my brother supported Arsenal, I went for QPR. He's now a successful multi-millionaire travelling the world to watch his team play in top competitions. I'm not.
Who did you nearly support…? on 12:42 - Aug 10 with 1007 views | willesdenr | First team I followed was Spurs in the days of Danny Blanchflower/Dave Mackay. LT ran a football special from Willesden bus garage to White Hart Lane. It was only a shilling for children and a tanner to get in the stadium. It was more a day out with mates to watch football so wasn't to fussed when the LT stopped running the special. Apart from the odd England game at Wembley we rather preferred playing football in King Eddies park than watching it, until a friend suggested going to see the Rs at White City. Had no idea who they were or who they were playing. Two of us sat opposite about a couple of thousand supporters in this large soulless 100,000 plus empty stadium. It wasn't until the Rs returned to Loftus Road I started going regularly, becoming completely hooked in the 60s with that team under Stock. Fantastic football especially Marsh who could take your breath away with his tricks and goals. Great days and been with them ever since.
Who did you nearly support…? on 12:52 - Aug 10 with 983 views | Thorperanger | Nearly a gooner. Born in Hammersmith brought up in Acton but moved to Hounslow when 12. dad didn’t like football but had some friends who went to QPR one weekend and Arsenal the next. Dad paid for me to go with them after much nagging! After a couple of years I had to make a choice when I started going on my own and decided I was a West London boy. Mind you it was close , saw the Arse do the double and win the Fairs Cup in their Redford & Kennedy heighday, I was hoping for similar triumphs ………still waiting 😝
Who did you nearly support…? on 14:21 - Aug 10 with 882 views | stowmarketrange | I’ve just been told that I have to take my 8 year old grandson to the Ipswich v Southampton game next Sunday as his dad is at work. I hope I don’t catch anything.
Who did you nearly support…? on 14:35 - Aug 10 with 859 views | numptydumpty | Went to Portsmouth University for 4 years from 1987 to 1991 and went with a big crowd to watch their home games at Fratton Park. Lived practically in the next street adjacent to the ground. Was already a Ranger for many years, however definitely could say followed Pompey quite avidly at the same time. However, when push came to shove, if Portsmouth played QPR, at that time, there was no indecision. Was only couple of occasions that had that dilemma. One was slightly after my time living there. I think it was when Kevin Gallen scored, whilst simultaneously straddling the goal posts with his own personal crown jewels !!! It hurt him a little bit. Anyhow the choice when they played each other - was wearing the blue and white hoops, of course !!! [Post edited 10 Aug 14:44]
