Change the manager and change the players but old failings still remain. Don't have enough efforts on goal, lose concentration either side of half time and concede, cannot play well in both halves, new signings being injury prone and unable to beat average teams at home. Now seven home games on the spin without a win. It feels like a recurring theme for the last few years where the same issues remain to hold us near the relegation zone.

Thanks Clive.

As you point out, we weren’t really pressed or stretched by PNE and we struggled for fitness after 6 weeks of preseason. Sam Field predicted we’d be blowing after 45mins and he was right.

If we can play for the majority of the game we’ll win some but if we’re restricted to 45 mins at a time then it’s going to make for a very long season. Shouldn’t be that hard to change the fitness and conditioning or creating opposition chances from our own set pieces but there are times when Groundhog Day feels original.

Those possessed by devils, try and keep them under control a bit, can't you ?

“Problem is, much as this world of data freaks and geeks would like it not to be the case, football is still dictated and decided by the scoreline in the top left corner of the screen and the league table at the end of each weekend. Enough talk of game models, is this team actually any good?”

Completely this.
Either our CEO and his merry band of laptop carriers have lost sight of the main principle here , ..WINNING FOOTBALL MATCHES or they never really cared about that principle anyway.
I understand the importance of rounding up as many of the most talented young men around for the future but as said before , you can’t neglect the here and now as their worth decreases when we sit in league 1 or worse .
Might as well get Louis Walsh in as CEO . It’s getting that ‘weird’.

Sign a couple of big horrible buggers who don’t drop to their knees after 60 minutes with injury or complete exhaustion, otherwise we are going to really struggle .
But no . Koki Saito.
One of the smallest and nicest players in football .

All this slow burn rubbish, this is not athletics where all the races that matter are at the end of the season, we need them trained and fit right now.

Whoever’s paying Williams wages should have him dancing on hot coals in bare feet whilst he explains why the fck we are so unfit, cramping up and constantly collapsing with injuries.

If he answers that a player is fit an average of 85% of the time, the response should be chuck his laptop in a bowl of water and show him the door.

This recurring situation should be an utter embarrassment to the club and if smiley Stephan has got any balls he needs to call it out starting this morning.

But one of our best players last season and full of the energy we seem to be lacking.

Take your point and agree in principle .
I really like Saito.

But just look at every other side in this league .
They all stand like giants next to our lot . £2m which is reported is needed more in other areas surely ?
Saito will be a good addition but he isn’t what we are are crying out for at this moment .
It’s bordering on negligence to not get in some Physicality and muscle into the midfield especially .

Saito , plus a couple of experienced big bruisers then yes ok . That would work but I don’t think we have the finances for that .

Every season we look weak , small and unfit .
Drives me nuts

Completely agree. Yes, the likes of Mbengue and Poku look like great signings but there are still issues in our side, notwithstanding the injury situation. I am more negative than many on here regarding Saturday because I just don't see us having many easier games than that and we failed to get three points. It feels like we're not overly bothered about winning games in August because in two years' time we may make a profit on a player, which is a very risky gamble.

Very fair report, Clive. Agreed with it and enjoyed it.

Cheers Clive.

I wasn't there Saturday but looking at the highlights I don't think Walsh needed to come off his line for the goal, it just helped make up the mind of the Preston striker.

Anyway hoping we can build on the positives and player fitness improved.

45 games to go.

Walsh didn't come off his line, as such, he was already pushed up because we'd had the corner kick.

The problem was that Esquerdinha didn't want to head the ball and Madsen didn't have the pace to keep up with Osmajic.

I was surprised with Morgan playing at right back, mainly because I've not seen him play in defence for Rangers. However, I think I recall Tottenham supporters saying that he was a centre half in their youth sides, so perhaps it wasn't so unpredictable.

A very balanced report Clive. Thank you

Hmmm OK well even so it looked to me like he was moving forwards rather than backwards towards his goal line. Defenders might have got back to cover, and Osmajic would have had to think more about what to do with his shot.

Anyway sh1t happens, on to the next one.

Very fair summary.

I enjoyed the first half and being back at QPR in the sunshine and I was ok with a point, especially as there were some promising debuts. However, having reflected on the match I'm concerned that we may see a lot of similar performances but against much, much better teams. If so, we'll be in deep sh*t. I'm not convinced that either team really had a midfield on Saturday but that won't be the case when we play the bigger clubs. If Varane stays and we can get a Hayden type we'll have a foundation for the football we want to play, but without it teams will walk through us.

Suffering since 1978.

Still have the full team back defending corners. Boils my piss.
Not sure what Dembele and chair add to defending them .
Thought we kept the ball well in the first half . Different story second half , sadly.

Bug bear of mine as well.
Leave Dembele up, takes two of theirs away.

Fair report to me but 5 surely harsh on a young left back making his debut, I thought he impressed overall. Possibly at fault for their goal but not sure leaving him and Madsen back for a corner when you are 1-0 up was the brightest move, with an organiser like Cook on the bench.

If we're giving 6s and 7s out to players because they're young and inexperienced then it's going to be a very odd season of averages. The majority of the team is young and inexperienced.

But didn't you think, the goal aside, he impressed?

(Appreciate that part of the sentence - "the goal aside" - is doing some fairly heavy lifting.)

I liked how he chucked himself into challenges, I liked how he went forwards with the ball, and it is obviously tough to step into that situation on debut when presumably Larkeche was meant to be playing until later in the week.

However he's out of position and makes a poor decision which cost us a goal, and I didn't think that was the only time his positioning was suspect. He also faced next to no challenge down that side. Same as Morgan on the other, who looked confident and assured but didn't get run at once. Preston played without wingers, without overlaping full backs, and with two wing backs that didn't seem bothered about crossing the halfway line.

A 5 is fair. And, as ever, we're only arguing about the difference between a 5 and a 6, unless you were going to give him the same mark as Dembele and Poku.

All fair comments and in the overall scheme of thing not hugely important. I would just say I was quite relieved: I feared we had another Santos who was unsuited to this league but I liked the way he got stuck in.

My main takeaway from your report is that given how poor Preston were, given how untested a lot of our team were due to the opposition, and given how makeshift our team was, we are hardly any further forward than we were pre kick off in assessing where we stand this season.

Pretty well all predictions (bar perhaps those tipping us for the automatics, and perhaps those hoping for the play offs) are still very much in play, from relegation to comfortable mid table.

When did Field say that? To say it's concerning is an understatement. The fitness situation is just so, so poor for a professional club. Do the owners care?

100%! I didn't like his smug and spiritless 'performance' at the FF one bit, and I'm really worried about the physical management/training of the squad this season after just one game.
