Swansea City v Sheffield United : Match day thread on 23:36 - Aug 16 by Fireboy2 | Yes the defence helped key out in the first half but isn't that their job? To help each other out. Galbraith, franco and yalcouye are very good at defending and this new fella from forest is a defensive midfielder so it looks on the defensive side, yes key isnt te best FB at defending but with these 4 helping out it gives key more chance to get forward. Re ronald, I thought he looks far more confident going forward, especially today, let's hope he can keep it up. |

I have always said that Ronald should be running down the centre. One of LW failures was playing him within an inch of the line, where his confidence just faded away.

Yes. It was there in glimpses yesterday. You could see the potential to be a very good team when everyone gets on the same wavelength. Defensively solid, as you expect from Sheehan, but with a few well constructed attacking moves thrown in. A lot, including me, were critical of last weeks game, but said we expected it to improve fairly quickly. That was a much better performance and much quicker than I thought.

Swansea City v Sheffield United : Match day thread on 23:28 - Aug 16 by RichardO | Mistakes will be made, Key made a mistake or two and struggled against the winger but the team made sure his mistakes were not costly, as for Key's defendering which was questionable in the first half, he dealt with the long cross field ball aerially quite well it has taken him some time to do the defensive work properly but in a properly functioning team he may be more confident in what is required , I still think his understanding with Ronald is poor but when it clicks both defence and attack should benefit. As for Ronald he has put away two goals percentage wise his stats could be higher but both his goals has put the team ahead as needed. [Post edited 16 Aug 23:36]

In Keys defence our defenders continually tend to drift over to the left leaving Key an incredible amount of space to cover, throw in he gets little support from Ronald and he has an impossible job. Yes he makes some poor decisions not showing the attacker down the line, but he has too many decisions to make and there rarely is someone to double up with him. Opposition managers can see this and play on the situation again making it worse.

Within the first ten minutes, I could see both why they rate him so highly and don’t think he’s ready for PL football. Very little awareness of what’s going on around him, needs to look up a lot more. Lost it cheaply on a couple of occasions to an opponent on his blindside. But what tenacity, (controlled) aggression and desire. Constantly wanting the ball and wanting to move it on quickly, regardless of where he was or whether he was marked. He looks pretty much the perfect player for turning it over in midfield and setting us on a quick counter. | | | | Login to get fewer ads

It's quite common for players coming from abroad to look a bit bewildered for a few games as they continually get caught in possession. Once he gets up to speed he's going to be some player.

Agreed. He dominated the midfield for 20 minutes. Once he settles in, he is going to be a level above. Even on one of the occasions he got pickpocketed, he managed to get goal side of the player from a standing start, which forced him to check back and allowed us to get back in shape behind the ball and neutralise the counter.

Yes, I liked his little square passes on the turn. Kept us moving forward at times when in the past we'd have ended up going right back to our own penalty area.

Did anyone else see that they kept calling Inoussa over from the subs bench to tell him what they wanted from him positionally in French? I spotted it a few times where they were telling him where they wanted him on corners etc but he didn't understand.. so there's plenty of room for improvement after a few more games

The movement and passing through the middle of the park was much better giving options to the player on the ball. It also allowed us to progress forward with numbers meaning when the ball ended out to the wingers they had the space to take players on and because the defenders had other players to contend with the threat on the edge of the box was more controlled with the speed of getting both ball and numbers forward to outnumber their defence. That threat level increased further with Widell and Inoussa on the pitch, impact subs as the players tire or starting players, giving Sheehan options. Wonder if Wales will get more minutes next Saturday or a start in the Cup game or will Vipotnik get the game time? [Post edited 17 Aug 9:53]

Precisely. Moving the ball through midfield is more about the players receiving the passes than those making them. We have much better options there now. If we can find a way of getting Widell in the starting line up, that would improve it more, because we’d have a player who moves into space and commits defenders. One thing I liked about Yalcouye was he didn’t over complicate. Just looked for the simplest pass without going backwards then moved into space and wanted it back.

I didn’t see that, but it makes sense. He hasn’t been here long enough to learn much of our tactics. I’ve no doubt he will be a huge player for us within a couple of games.

Swansea City v Sheffield United : Match day thread on 20:09 - Aug 16 by Fireboy2 | Agree on galbraith, cullen and tymon but not on key. He had one of his better games for us today, he was defensive sound especially in the second half. |
Key was poor defensively again yesterday ,he doesn’t get close enough to the opponent and backs off too much instead of trying to get a foot in. He was passed far too easily time and again by the winger and if the crosses had been better would have hurt us . He looked better second half because Sheffield played more on Timon’s side of the pitch not because he’d improved,he does look like a weak link defensively I’m afraid and we’re going to need better in that position

Swansea City v Sheffield United : Match day thread on 19:16 - Aug 16 by TheNobbingHockster | Good 3 points against a team that should still be there or thereabouts but currently seem to be in turmoil. Most players did okay (obviously this is only my opinion) but some not. Early days, time to gel etc is understandable for some but I feel some should be hitting the ground running. Eom still offers little to the team for me. Cullen is totally ineffective. Obviously this is again the fact that we need a striker, which I keep getting told is happening. Key very dodgy defensively today whilst I thought Tymon ran Galbraith for MoM. Two weeks into the season and a win at home against one of the Championship favourites is good enough for me despite any failings. Uppa Jacks |
Your right , Cullen should have been replaced far earlier, he’d done a lot of running, chasing defenders and closing down. He’s not a 9 and we needed a more attacking presence up front

There does seem to be a train of though used that the fullbacks need to tuck in close to and cover the centre backs if for example the opposition play two up top or the midfield press on but if the opposition's main outlet is the wings by slow progression of keep ball then our fullbacks should be close enough to the wingers to stop them having ball to feet while far enough away to give themselves a chance to turn to defend against the through ball in behind that a fast winger can use his pace to get the better of the fullback. Both Key and Tymon as wingback been asked to get forward at every opportunity while the defensive duties would be covered by the three centreback and the midfield, thankfully we have reverted to four at the back meaning both Key and Tymon have had to pay more attention to their defensive duties. They are getting there and both have improved. As for Key not getting help from Ronald I don't think that is strictly true but there does seem to be a total lack of understanding between them with their play together Key not getting the ball to Ronald earlier for example and yesterday their inability to work out who was going to go to the man on the ball and who was going to take the running it ended up quite farcical but thankfully uneventfully.
Swansea City v Sheffield United : Match day thread on 10:31 - Aug 17 with 698 views | Dr_Winston | Their winger got around Key a couple of times but even after he did he was generally shepherded quite well. He's a decent enough FB. Not outstanding, not terrible. I think he's just another victim of the binary nature of what passes for online football commentary these days. Players are either awesome or terrible. There doesn't seem to be much room for the merely decent. We saw when he first joined that he's probably got a level or two left in him above what we mostly see so it'll be interesting to watch if Sheehan can get that out of him a bit more. Think we have already seen improvements in him defensively he is blessed with a good turn of pace that allow him to catch wingers after they have gone passed him but if you get in a mindset that you rely solely on your pace you can come unstuck, there is a battle to be played out between wingers and fullbacks and the right tactics are needed to be used to gain the upper hand even for the fastest of players.I think Key can offer a lot more maybe by doing the simple and not overcomplicate things. A word or encouragement for Sam Parker who played well against Crawley both in defence and in attack. [Post edited 17 Aug 11:17]

Sam Parker was good against Crawley ,putting in a good tackles and came away with the ball a good few times. Know it was against Crawley but Key struggled in pre season against similar level sides . Key is an attacking wing back not a traditional defensive full back and I think that’s the problem

Key goes a full 40 yards inside and leaves his man free to receive the ball. I just think he daydreams. We sit in the south and at least twice Burgess was giving him a rollicking for doing it. Good to see.

I tend to agree. Key's weakness is lack of concentration at times. Didn' t see that yesterday though. Defence was outstanding. Massive energy in midfield. Read somewhere that Gustavo Hamer one of the best midfielders in the Championship only had 30 touches!! Says it all. [Post edited 17 Aug 12:11]
