Key goes a full 40 yards inside and leaves his man free to receive the ball.
I just think he daydreams. We sit in the south and at least twice Burgess was giving him a rollicking for doing it. Good to see.

Well as you well know if a FB goes forward someone has to cover him, it isn't rocket science.

Sam Parker was good against Crawley ,putting in a good tackles and came away with the ball a good few times. Know it was against Crawley but Key struggled in pre season against similar level sides .
Key is an attacking wing back not a traditional defensive full back and I think that’s the problem

I said similar last season.
I think Key is a very good wing back in a defensive five. Last year I would even have played him instead of Ronald as the RW.
I like him buy he's extremely dodgy as a RB for a variety of reasons already mentioned.

The back five system didn't work given the deficiencies in the midfield, Martin reverted to a back four and got positive results as for Key in that Second half he cut out numerous cross fields balls, in the first half they played balls to feet. In an attempt to keep a good defensive shape as SU played out from the back we dropped a little too deep giving them too much time to play balls to the wings and were reactive in the closing down rather than proactive in guiding them into closed off area of the pitch on the flanks.
That wasn't just Key, the main problem Key has he takes too many touches of the ball in defensive areas of the pitch even Malick Yalcouye did at times as he adjusted to the game, the mistakes were recovered so not a problem yesterday, Happy with the result but still work to be done.

It was also good to see Burgess giving advice to (not rollicking) Eom at one point and ?? (I can't remember the other one).

It was also good that even though they were pressuring him on his left, pushing him into making a couple of early mistakes it didn't phase him. He kept playing his normal game and the early mistakes disappeared.

Experience.

Burgess was talking to most of the team throughout the game advising and chastising. This is why I said earlier in the thread he is a far better captain than Cabango.

Someone made a mistake, may have been Galbraith but Cabango had to clear up by giving a corner. He didn’t encourage the player or bark at him, said nothing which if I were Captain I would have done. I like a vocal cat ain’t. We had Grimes for too long who said next to nothing. Burgess may be the better option but that won’t happen.

I recall a moment when Burgess went over to one of their players and as he got closer the guy just started looking up. It was during a slight scuffle. Presence is everything, just think he will take time to get used to playing our way. He does at times look a bit unsteady in the ball. But he is slowly adapting.

A great believer in taking anything you like to wherever you want to.

Grimes should have been club captain not team captain and done his work off the pitch.

I'm one of those old fashioned fans. I love a captain or a player who tells team mates during the match what they done right or wrong. Grimes was Mr invisible on the pitch when he was captain. Clapped his hands to encourage and when we was losing, he would walk away and blow his nose. What he did off the pitch, who knows. But I like Cabango and Burgess being vocal. Think Burgess is getting there and when it clicks him and Cabango will be great in defense.

I dare say this. Both Key and Tymon looked much better defensively yesterday. Probelry best I have both seen them. Which is rare. Will it last? Not sure. But in betting we will leak goals now on the weekend because I said that.

Oh don't get me wrong, I don't want a back five. I'm old fashioned. RB CB CB LB.
I just meant that Key is far more effective going forward than he is defending so that back 5 suited him more. I still think he's a good enough RB with Sam Parker a more than capable back up. And, yes, that's with his too many touches on the ball, like Malick yesterday, as you said.

Key needs to improve much of his game, distribution going forwards as when it breaks down he is left stranded. As an attacking force he adds a lot, more of a threat though, but defensively both him and Tymon can be sleepy.

As i have said previously re key, if he bombs forward whether with the ball or not its upto others to notice and to provide cover, the same goes for tymon.

The way I see it is if we can’t score goals then we can’t afford to concede. But does that make us entertaining to the paying public? It’s swings and roundabouts depending which way you look at it.
