I was at yesterday's game & as Northern did at a previous game I watched Madsen closely,
Madsen was beyond lazy, never showed for the ball and hid.
Varane changed the game when he replaced him as we then had 10 outfield players on the pitch.
In a team that rarely dominates possession and games Madsen is a complete passenger. |
Madsen is a really odd player. He either does very well, end of last season and Preston last week, or he is completely anonymous. There is zero middle ground.
I think what we have got is a consistently inconsistent player, which is what makes him so infuriating to watch.

I wouldn't say that he has bee 'very good' in any matches really. From memory at the end of last season (Sunderland and Oxford) he did quite well but then faded badly. Same against Preston.

100% agree.
I think that Wilkins is right that for this team to improve the centre of midfield has to improve, and I also think he's right that ideally all three (please, not two!) central midfielders should be able to play on the turn and pass and/or run forward. But there is just so much to admire about Field, and your post nails it. |  |

No one is remotely suggesting Nourry is telling Stephan what to do in game. Read my post again. There is a game model, a theory, that is set by Nourry. That is a fact. He says the coach has flexibility to veer from it. The way we are setting up and some of the personnel calls in the first two games are remarkably similar to last year’s start too.
And Colback started 16 and came on as a sub in 8. Morgan started 21 and came on as a sub in 11. |
I think Morgan is OK, he needs to improve but the midfield position that he plays, a forward thinking forward passer, is much more difficult to do well.
Regarding the 3 CMs that you mention, I cannot recall many times, 10/12 max, I recon whereby Field, Varane & Morgan have played together and the results have been very mixed indeed.
Is Madsen good enough, maybe yes, maybe no.......he ended the season pretty well, started v PNE no worse than most & did ok imho, got tired in the 2nd like many of them did. Posters need to understand that not all players tear around the pitch, kick players, tackle to hurt, just like not all players can see passes and execute accordingly. Some of the stuff about him is far from accurate, one poster stated he passes and stands still - not correct because he actually passed it wide and went to support the player, lots of examples. Some of the posters criticism is poor play. But as I say, at the start, maybe he is, maybe his is not good enough - tough call, just like who is the better keeper, nardi or walsh.. | | | |
