Watford Matchday Thread on 16:39 - Aug 30 by City_boy | S**T - 2-2= Free kick from about 25 yds out. It was towards top right, but disappointing to be beat from that far out. I think there was only 3 in wall (need t see again), So if you dont have a full wall, you must be confident of not getting beat from 25 yds. Very poor [Post edited 30 Aug 16:43]

Yeah, one point from the last six... or 2 from the last nine if you want - makes poor reading. Need to get up to speed and quickly really. Hopefully the new lads will improve us a lot but I do still worry about the defence & keeper. Something tells me that is where a season-long weakness 'could' be our undoing.

No way are they getting a new keeper, they've signed the Norwich keeper as back up & we have 3 keepers. McCarthy is a better keeper than Baz. Macca makes more saves than Baz & keeps the ball out of the net which is the role of a keeper. Baz is so easily beaten. Macca was crucial in our promotion run when we got promoted, I'm not convinced we'd have got promoted if Baz had played in those crucial matches. I'm not saying Macca is great but you don't have to be better than Baz. [Post edited 30 Aug 17:09]

In this window we needed to build a strong spine with a better goalkeeper, better centre half and better centre forward. We didn't do it. We got Long, Quarshie and Downs. Today we looked like a lower mid-table Championship team.

Absolutely correct GRIM. He’s always been poor and always will be, simply because he can’t react quickly enough to save shots. Rather a handicap if you’re a goal keeper. McCarthy the only reason we got to Wembley.

Watford’s goals. First goal was a superb finish. Second was a great free kick. Bazunu wasn’t to blame for either goal. Their first goal was also their first shot on target.

Couldn't agree more. Yes, today was another day without a win and yes, some will say it was Watford away & not a bad point. But the crux of the matter is the same old problems that have plagued us for longer than I care to remember just keep coming back to haunt us. In the very early Summer, we needed a top keeper, a top, solid, experienced, proven centre half, and a proven, top quality striker (at least at this level - a Josh Sargent for example who, incidentally, scored both of Norwich's goals today in their win). We have thus far failed on all three counts. It's all well and good buying a plethora of wide midfielders, on the left, on the right, defensive midfielders, attacking midfielders, creative midfielders, holding midfielders... yadda yadda. But here we are, yet again, failing to address the same old elephant in the room. It's groundhog day once again. With a little over 48-hours to go before the the transfer window closes, can someone, please, in the lofty heights of Sport Republic Towers, get the cheque book out & at least fill in a couple of the gaps above before all these midfielders they've purchased will count for nothing & we will, in all likelihood, be out of the running for promotion even before I'm pouring the bread sauce on my roast turkey Christmas dinner!

Yeah, good points made. We still dont have a decent striker and as you say the Norwich striker scores goals for fun, but Downes was our striker signing. And not only that, I'm worried about Bazunu and the lack of a real quality player in defence. [Post edited 30 Aug 17:43]

Spot on 1885 SFC. I couldn’t have put it better myself. Will Sports Republic give us long suffering fans a solution to our problems as identified in your last paragraph ? Absolutely no chance whatsoever, simply because they aren’t fit to own, run and manage a top football team, which we once were.

I'm gonna count to ten - chill out, keep calm - and wait until 7.01pm on Monday evening before passing judgement on any possible new arrivals. I'm thinking, on one hand, that a loan for a good striker from one of the top Premier League sides 'may' materialise. And perhaps, while they're at it, maybe we will pull a real rabbit out of the hat & buy (or loan) a solid, dependable centre half from some other top PL club! But then... I'll probably sigh as the clock ticks past 7.00pm on a miserable, rainy, wet Monday evening as I remember, suddenly, that Sport Republic own us now - owners that bought us Damion Downs - a striker that will finish the season collecting more yellow cards than goals - and any dreams I might have of us keeping a clean sheet in any league game we play this season will be just that - a dream.

If we don't get the players we need then it won't be all SR's fault. What we end up with will be largely down to Will Still. He has seen enough to know the problems in the squad and I'm sure the recruitment reflects his choices. He has been talking about the need for wingers (done), a right back (done) and an attacking midfielder (done). He has said absolutely nothing about a goalkeeper, CB or CF. So it will be no surprise if we don't get them. Maybe he's right and he has what he needs in those positions, or maybe work is going on behind the scenes and new players will arrive by Monday. Either way, what we end up with can't be entirely blamed on, or credited to SR. It will have WS's fingerprints on it too. Let's hope he's got it right.
