My theory is when you want to win a game, don’t play Field. He cannot play attacking football, he can do some defensive work, but doesn’t mean you won’t lose the game (like the “shield” in the 1-7 loss to Coventry). JS realised this theory and reacted quickly. He replied the WLS question on dropping Field for the Charlton game: “we have to make a choice …”

For the avoidance of doubt, no we cannot say statistically Madsen is better than Field.
For example, the last time we won a game by 3 goals, Sam Field started in an attacking role and we scored three.

Field is better than Madsen all day long - not even a competition.
I think people forget how much Field contributed when we were really poor, he's always available and never hides.
Madsen had one half decent game, but has also had multiple games where he has been worse than useless. I hope he can find some form, but I fully expect another pathetic performance the next time we come up agaisnt a decent midfield.
We played a side today that will likely be battling relegation and have a poor midfield. We should be aiming to have a midfield that contends with teams at the top. | | | |

Not sure why the OP compares the 2? Field's natural main attributes are defensive. He makes a good left sided defensive shield type midfielder, or a left sided CB imo. Madsen's natural main attributes are offensive with his technique and quick forward passing, and being able to make dangerous long passes. He's improving the defensive parts of the game. Varane and Field are more comparable to me in that Varane's strengths have been mainly defensive, but to me it looks like with fitness and experience his game going forward will improve. The choice of who to pick in defensive midfield is more between Field and Varene to me if we aren't playing both which would normally be very defensive selection. As Oslo says, they’re very different players. The trouble for Field is that JS is a more attack minded coach than MC and I also suspect that with his Gallic flair Stéphan has got a bit of a boner for Nicolas Madsen. Field’s on field minutes may be heavily restricted this season and he’s more likely to feature away from home against the top teams. Even then he’s competing against Hayden alongside Varane and I rate Hayden’s all round game higher than Field’s. | | | |
