Out of the darkness – Report on 23:03 - Aug 31 by Northernr

I get it mate, but my Twitter is getting absolute pelters and I've got people emailing me pretending to be my dead dad telling me what a waste of space I am so I couldn't really write that report could I? Had to at least try and be positive.

And, hey, they won. It's meant to be fun this. As I said after the last home win (February) when you've won 22/82 home games it is important to try and be positive and happy when the rare good days come around.

These people bothering you are an utter disgrace and I presume it is against the law. You should be able to write what you want to write or think what you want to think. It is you that puts the work in, you that travels up and down the country and the entertainment you provide is superb. I don't always have to agree with what you think about the team, or club (just like Dave Mc at WLS) but I always love and appreciate what you do.

I am with you here though, for all the what ifs and sliding doors moments of Saturday, there's no point in supporting the club if you don't enjoy the winning times, however they come. Those of us old and bitter and twisted are allowed to be concerned at the same time that some familiar issues remain and I certainly think Wrexham will be an interesting guide. I remember coming out of Kenilworth Road last season thinking top half was a certainty and all was rosy. How wrong I am on these things, relentlessly. That's where the caution comes from.

Cracking report, Clive. Pretty excited about the green shoots, but nervous as always with anything QPR...

I know it gets a level of engagement that other social media platforms dont. But I spend far more time on Bluesky these days and only use the toxic site for QPR news.
Certainly wont engage withthe idiots/racists/ just downright nasty people.

Can yo do the same? Suspect not, given your profession.

Great report as always .The Guinness tasted very sastifying in the Crown afterwards and the general mood in there seemed quite good .
Nobody’s getting carried away at the moment though . Game went on similar lines to the Preston draw except this time we had genuine game changers.
They make all the difference.
Always nice to see Nathan jones suffer which he invariably does against our lot.

The comments of those Twitter warriors are despicable. But, we know that and we have nothing but contempt for them. As far as the law is concerned, we probably have enough of it already. Hard though it may be at times, it is probably best to leave the Twitter twerps free to make their utterances. Incitement to kill or destroy - come down on them hard. But, inconsiderate or hurtful comments? We just build our resistance.

Fantastic Clive considering you haven’t been great, Coventry debacle and horrible horrible keyboard warriors.

Saito it wasn’t just the goal it was everything he did, got clattered, Charlton left back got a yellow, but what did he do. Got up dusted himself down and smiled.

He’s a year older, experienced the league, knows what it takes and obviously loves the place.

Kone, could you imagine trying to pay against him, he didn’t just take out the cb, he did it legally and notice did apologise while the guy was trying to get his breath back.

Hoping Smyth wasn’t injured and the other crocks closer to the bench or on the grass.

Out of interest Clive, what drives more traffic to the site. A 7-1 loss or a 3-1 win?

Pure poetry! Finding a few words that distil both a person and a moment so perfectly is such a gift.
I will remember that description of Koki for a long time!

Great writing. And like so many others on here I really enjoy and appreciate your work on LFW!

Fwiw there is an absolute danger (previously of this parish) posing as me and at least a handful of others on Bluesky, posting atrocious offensive stuff... So whilst it's better Bluesky isn't without it's share of weapons.

Sorry you're getting this stuff Clive, goes without saying but the wastes of space involved are enormously out numbered by people who truly value your work.

Echoing the thanks Clive. You've heard it hundreds of times, but the post-match reports you post here has become a fundamental part of the 'match/QPR experience'.

A comment on Saito: I thought his movement and first touch was first class. Charlton clearly didn't know how to handle him. I thought he filled that role much better than Chair, whose tendency to hold onto the ball far too long is a weakness that he should have improved by now. Saito is also more dynamic than Dembele; even if they are cut a little from the same cloth.

The Twitter business is pretty awful. As an overseas season ticket holder, I like to read and learn of your post-match reactions, so have you considered Blue Sky? Or, perhaps via Patreon, set up a Discord channel where you can publish work and interact with people that appreciate your material? It's a way to weed-out the goons and the gimps.

The difference a proper striker makes. Everything about him is a green flag. It only took the club a dozen tries to buy a good one

I've been a QPR fan for going 30 years now. Never lived anywhere near London, it's my dad's team, and my interest and involvement has gone up and down over the years. Since 2022/23 I've had the most sustained engagement with the club in my life, even as the on-pitch goings-on have been mostly rubbish and we've lurched from disaster to disaster, and it's entirely because over summer of 2022 I started reading this site. The quality and insight of what you write was transformative for me in supporting this club. I don't always agree with everything, but I don't need to, that isn't the point. Your ability to get out 48 previews and reports every season plus all the other stuff is remarkable, especially when what you're writing about is so often bloody awful.

I know a thing or two about publishing for an online audience so I'm familiar with the kind of disproportionate hostility and outright weird behaviour you're experiencing. I can't offer any useful advice for dealing with it except rolling your eyes and ignoring it, which is much harder for something like LfW which is a lot more direct and personal than what I do, but I can offer the above as a counterpoint to say how much I value what you do here. Keep fighting on - there's a lot more of us that appreciate you than there are gobby little trolls on Twitter.

Cheers Clive.

I don't think we can totally ignore the fittness issues on Saturday though. After 25 minutes I thought we looked knackered & that Saito (not played since April) is our fittest player!

However, your report gave me food for thought in that I'd not considered that Charlton changed their approach to the game at that point. Possibly because I always look at what Rangers are doing rather than the opposition. It is still alarming though that we suddenly had large gaps between defence, midfield & attack.

I was pleasantly surprised about how far forward Vale played & would suggest that we played close to a 4-4-2 in 4-4-1-1. I also think we kept this after Burrell replaced Vale, with Kone playing slightly deeper.

Whether I'm right or not, we looked to get the ball forward quicker & more often. Good!

I'm in a similar position - supported QPR for about 50 years initially because they were my dad's team. Only lived in London until I was 5, and generally get to between 6-10 games a season, mostly away. For me, a huge part of being a QPR supporter is this website and all of the previews, ref info, interviews and match reports that Clive produces. Not only the volume but the quality of the output is fantastic. So Clive, please realise that for every abusive idiot on social media, there are a huge number of people who greatly appreciate all of the work you do.

Always the defeat.

Aha! No wonder you hate the club, always want them to lose - this is when you get the millions rolling in from LFW.

Finally, I get it.

On a serious note, it is odd. I know for a fact I am much more likely to log into this board quicker after a defeat than a win. To try and find solace in the anger, perhaps? Or maybe because I don't want my mood to be brought down by someone claiming Sam Field is useless even though he was instrumental in a win in my eyes? Who knows.

Great read Clive, thought Charlton had the (much) better of it and 3-1 flattered us but a win is a win.

Now onto deadline day, can't wait to see Alfie Gilchrist link up with our new ball-playing No.8 Hayden if rumours on Twitter are to be believed!

Great report Clive and I absolutely love the description of the third goal.😂
With regard to Mbengue, I don't think the ref was going to give the foul but perhaps the linesman 'persuaded him to award it'. Hence if the ref wasn't totally convinced he decided not to give the second yellow. We and Mbengue got lucky; That's three consecutive games he's collected one. At this rate he'll be the first one in the league to collect a ban for five.
