Yeh but no but, in the year of, I made the decision to, it was a mistake, but yes but no. Cummings eat your heart out. Human beings will never change will they left or right. Didn't she make a huge thing about tax avoidance and tax dodgers before the election?
Can the working class idol now be someone who actually represents the hard working, smart working class which I know.
Working class people are not dumb and they play by the rules. My parents were working class people who worked hard and got an education. Rayner, by contrast, is pretty thick, owns 3 houses, and doesn’t pay tax. She’s a disgrace to the “working class” and any use to show her up as the working class figurehead is a joke.
Anyone else feel a bit patronised when they call this thick woman the working class spokesperson?

When human beings get into positions of power, with access to the safe, working class or not, they just can't help themselves.
Animal Farm - What a true story of life that is. All animals are equal apart from the biggest one and the most powerful one.

I’m no fan of hers or any of the current Labour Party leadership but just for clarity she owns 2 houses and does pay tax. She didn’t pay the correct amount of stamp duty on a property she bought in Hove. The other home is in her constituency and the third is a ministerial home provided for her as Deputy PM. She doesn’t own it. She should have paid the stamp duty correctly.

Stamp duty is a form of taxation.

Nothing illegal and I'd probably do the same myself, but lets be frank, the optics here are awful. Lecturing others ad infinitum about their tax avoidance behaviour and then doing the opposite of what she preaches.
Can anyone seriously defend what she's done in the light of what she's been saying over the last few years?

I think she's been badly advised but she should have had the nous to know it would look bad. Basic error, not much sympathy on this but compared to the the corruption of the previous government, it's a drop in the ocean

Rayner's financial advisor has just been revealed...

Thanks Heisenberg for saving me the trouble of needing to provide some clarity to the situation for those who perhaps base their judgment simply on the headlines in the likes of the Daily Fail and the Torygraph.
My understanding of her statement is that her affairs are complicated by the existence of a previous divorce and the provision of a house held in trust for the ongoing use of one of her and her then husbands disabled children.
Before giving public access to details of the trust she had to apply to a court to be able to do so. I imagine that course of action is standard practice to protect the interests of the child to which the trust applies.
It appears that it is around the definition of legal ownership of the house held in trust that the problem has arisen.
She contends that she sought and obtained legal advice concerning the ownership of the trust house which may subsequently have been inaccurate, hence the incorrect amount of stamp duty was imposed in the purchase of the Hove Flat. From what I’ve read it’s not been suggested that no stamp duty whatsoever was charged.
It is further suggested that the amount owing to the Revenue is in the sum of Forty Thousand Pounds which she has now agreed to pay.
For those wishing to find her guilty, by all means do so that’s your privilege, but it’s probably best to consider all the facts before doing so.

Comparing this to the last government is no excuse. Labour, and in particular, Rayner, spent years adopting a holler than thou stance, swearing they’d be better.
Guess what? Their snouts are deep in the trough too. The scale of their hypocrisy seems to know no bounds.

People in glass houses yadda yadda...
Reminiscent of that utter tvvat Ed Davey. Very quick to demand other people’s resignations when they fvcked up on the job, but does a “nothing to see here” routine when those poor Post Office bods were utterly screwed over on his watch.
The arrogance of some (most?) politicians is beyond belief…
I find myself shocked as ever at the outright hypocrisy of some. When Tories do this sort of thing, there is no 'Looking at the facts' it is just assumed they are thieving cheating bastards, which they are.
I wish people would adopt a much more neutral and clear view of this sort of thing and stop being affected by their own political bias. All of them are rotten to the core, Labour, Tories and I dare say Reform also. Why can't some people just accept this instead of rushing to defend their party people all the time? It's very childlike.

So disappointing.
As I said, you can't compare the two governments. The corruption was off the scale with the last government. I don't support Labour, but they are better than the last lot

Very well put. I can't understand people that have such a hard 'on for politics and back "their party" no matter what, whilst frothing at the mouth with everything to other lot do.
People are kidding themselves if they think someone goes into politics for the greater good; it might start out that way for some, but once they realise the doors it opens and the money they can make on side hustles, human nature takes over and they self serve. I would suspect there's very few MPs who aren't very wealthy and they haven't got that from their ÂŁ100k salary.

You cant compare the two governments.....but then you did.
Did the people calling out Raynor now call out the long list of Tory transgressors (including Johnson) over the last few years? I’m guessing not. Even is she has made a genuine mistake, her position now is untenable, but let’s not pretend that this is worse than the Zahawi situation, the multiple PPE scams and other countless Tory grifts. Apparently she had three different advisers telling her that she was paying the correct amount, but let’s not worry about the facts if we can give a “lefty” a good kicking eh?

I voted Labour at the last election, namely because the country was in a mess, to give the other a lot a go and because of all the scandals you mention. I am.not particularly one or the other, but am again fed up of those in power, not following the rules,.especially when they strongly suggested the scandals of the past were not to happen under Labour.
I am very disappointed (but not surprised) that a "working class" woman, who professed to be the perfect tax payer, to follow the rules, to be strongly against any form of poverty, to be on the side of the workers, the disabled etc was part of agreeing to take away winter fuel payments for pensioners, to attempt to take away money from the disabled, and now to not properly pay her taxes.
It's not about who is worse, it is about someone showing a totally different face when in power, and that goes for Starmer too. The Tories are exactly the same, that's not the point. With this lot, change was promised. Why can't those in power, especially those who strongly profess it, just follow the rules and serve.in the way that they said they would? Did you think for one minute think that a Labour government would attempt to take.away money from the disabled, all pensioners, not pay their taxes and cosy up to Donald Trump? Theybsaid they would smash the gangs, they said they would be on the side of the workers etc. All a load of lies, just like the other lot. Once in power, they all show their true colours right?

Fair points Sogs, but...
It might be no worse than Zahari - but she called him out big time and demanded he should go. Hence the stench of hypocrisy around this.
Also, relying on advisers is not necessarily a great defence for someone in charge of housing.
We must remember too that the advice any adviser gives is completely reliant on the information received from the client. This will have been made clear in any appointment letter, together with various disclaimers about not giving advice on issues outside their remit (such as tax) with a recommendation the client seeks appropriate specialist advice.
Whichever way we cut it, Ange is in a tight spot...

Meanwhile you are doing that exact same thing, you are trying to justify what Rayner did. Tory supporters try to justify their team, now you are doing the same thing while deriding them for doing it. Incredible blinkered views.
Now, say after me ... "they are all the bloody same"
