As ever with saints of late, impossible to know how this will go. I have a feeling they will shock us as they will be well up for it and perhaps a lot of our players will not understand the importance, even though Will I am sure will talk to them about it.
I think we are much more a work in progress than they are. They are a typical team of championship fighters where as we are perhaps a bit more flair and skill. Our lot are gonna have to really roll up the sleeves and get stuck in. I fancy a red card or two if I am honest.
I will wait to see the line up and bench before I predict, but fancy a 2-2.

They are a settled side with a sucessful manager who's now into his 3rd season. 1st season they won league . 2nd season they comfortably established themselves into the Championship after a dodgy first half to the season.
We are better than them on paper , but its hard to feel any real confidence as we are flaky all over the pitch and they have nothing to lose. Not confident.

I'm probably more nervous about this derby than have been of any in my lifetime. Generally speaking we've gone into these games either already knowing one side is probably going to win it, or knowing there's a fag paper between them.
In this game we on paper should be the better side but they're arguably in better form.
That's what gives me the nerves, because as we well know form in these games is often the more important thing.

The form isn't that much different, they have just won one more game.
You could argue they have had an easier start, a 1-0 win over Oxford who are in the bottom 3, a 2-1 home defeat to Norwich whom we beat easily in the cup and who sit 11th in the league, a 1-1 draw against second placed West Brom was good, but another 1-0 home win against mid table Preston is a lot easier than our 4 games of Wrexham, Ipswich, Stoke & Watford.
They are a side that struggle to score goals but don't let them in either,

They were ridiculously lucky to get a point at West Brom.
The ref was obscenely bad.
He should have sent off 2 Skates players for deliberate fouls preventing goals. One of which was for the most obvious penalty you will ever see.
West Brom's manager was sent off for (understandably) losing his head at the ref's incompetence.

Most of us would have expected ( and wanted) more than 5 points from our opening 4 games.
As for struggling to score we are not exactly free scoring ,relying on 2 cracking free kicks from Manning and a couple of goals from our centre half’s. We are also letting goals in - not exactly a recipient for success.
We need to improve at both ends if we are to win this, I’m not sure we have the team to do that.

I'd argue the form is significantly different because we're underperforming based on our squad and they're over performing based on their squad.
The fact the results are similar means nothing, if liverpool had won 2 gams, lost 2 games and drawn 1 game, and if Sunderland done the same wouldn't you say that liverpool's form was poor but sunderlands form was good?

We have to make our home advantage count. Being at home, ordinarily could make things edgy and nervy for the players with the moans and groans. All understandable in other games.
On this one occasion, we have to be right behind the team, for the full 90 minutes. We can't go quiet, we can't get edgy if they go one up. Nobody leaving early! We have a big role to play and we must play our part as fans. The players hopefully will give blood, sweat and tears.
It could be a tricky game. They have had a year in this league, they know what it's all about, and you saw that with their win against Preston. They will fight and be well organised. We have the better players, more quality but they haven't settled yet, so there is a slight worry that we haven't gelled yet with better players, but they are settled with poorer players. But it's a one off. We have to roar them on to a victory, like a cup final. Our more quality players need to step up and get the victory done.
Wow there's a lot of hand wringing in this thread.
We are better than them. We've been playing at a higher level for a long time so the fact they won L1 is irrelevant. We have spent decent money on what looks like very capable attacking players. Why is everyone so nervous. Pompey will be mid table at best. We need to win games at home against bottom half clubs if we want to challenge.
So we have better players and home advantage. If we match their effort then we should win the game by one or two. There's a lot riding on this for Still. Win and he will be a hero but lose and his record won't be looking too clever. He has the players now so no excuse, get out there and put them to the sword.

I, too, am shocked at the overall pessimism of our fans going into the game. It’s annoyed me a bit tbh.

"We have spent decent money on what looks like very capable attacking players." You literally have no idea if we have spent money well.
Saints havent put in a decent performance yet this season, the defence is leaky and the forward line is blunt. Other than that we are in great shape.
Im expecting a draw. They will defend for their lives and we never do well against those types of teams

I would love to say, it will be an easy win. But you can only go on what we have seen so far. We scraped past Wrexham in the 96th minute. Just about got a point at Portman road. Didn't beat relegation candidates Watford. We are 13th in the league and in a period of transition. Those are the facts. I hope we thrash them 5 nil. But what is evidence have you seen so far that it will happen?

The very fact we have a better side and have come down from the higher league. They are lucky to be in this division.
I don’t mind questioning the result, but the amount of GCs I’m in of people crying out “we’re gonna lose, we’re gonna lose.” Just loser mentality. We’ll have lost without even playing if they were around the camp. Imagine going to the Pompey game and being surrounded by such annoyances.

On that logic, how did Ipswich managed to get promoted 2 seasons ago. After all they had a a div 1 squad so should of got spanked every week.

Because they had a good squad for the Championship: shown by their immediate 2nd place finish. Portsmouth came up and finished 16th. Are you seriously comparing the two?
My two points were that (1) we came from the higher division; teams from the Premier League typically finish higher. (2) Pompey are lucky to be in this league; they were down the bottom last season and managed to stay up. They are clearly the worse team.

Absolutely agree with both points, and also think we SHOULD be the favourites, and 9 times out of 10 we SHOULD get something out of the game.
My concern/nerves is that we've had a fair amount of change before this and players might not've bedded in yet or be familiar playing with each other, whereas the skates have a more settled side.
The first 20mins will be absolutely vital because they're going to come out like a train i reckon, ride that out and we'll be fine, but it's not a sure as a lot of the other derbies i've been to (in my opinion)

But that sounds like questioning, which is normal. What I don’t like is the strict belief we will lose. The perpetual mantra of “we’re going to lose” in preparation for a game against Portsmouth is what gets me.

As he is total fantasist, probably no one. He really expects people to believe that his parrot answered the phone and had a conversation with a Saints fan?
