Another 5 games and we will be 10 games in. Most promotion chasing teams will expect to have at least 2 points per game by then. So around 20 points or more. That means we need 14 points from our next 5 (not possible of course). But can we get say 13 from this lot?

Hull v Saints
Saints v Boro
Sheffield UTD v Saints
Derby v Saints
Southampton Swansea

13 + 6 = 19 of course, which should have in good contention with the leaders. It seems no one is running away with it as yet, so it may be by the that the leaders only have say 22 points, leaving us just 3 behind.

There are 3 games there we should win. Typical that we have to play Sheffield UTD after Selles has gone and they were so beatable. Impossible to predict Saints of course, but i can see us only getting like 10 or 11 points from that lot with the way things are and a slight improvement.

What y'all think?

Indeed, with I think a better quad than we have now to be honest. An even though I hated his tactics, we also had a manager who understood the championship. Still is learning as he goes.

I think it's a much more open League than it has been for the last 2 seasons.

Two seasons ago, the top 2 (Leicester and Ipswich) finished on 97 and 96 points, and the 3rd place team (Leeds) were on 90. We had 87.

And then last season the top 2 (Leeds and Burnley) both finished on 100 points.

I would be very surprised if that happened again this season.

There don't seem to be any stand-out teams this season, although admittedly whenever I have seen Coventry, they have looked pretty good.

Which means you could have a situation where you have a team in mid-table at Christmas who could go on a great run from January onwards and end up in the top 2.

If we can stay in the mix at Christmas, and then get a much-needed striker in the January window, we could yet get to where we want to be.

We are already seven points behind the leaders and six behind the second placed team and currently fifteenth in the league after just five matches.

We have achieved this by playing four out of five teams ( Wrexham, Stoke, Watford and Portsmouth) that will in all likelihood finish mid table at best.

We have scored six goals with only two coming from forwards.

We have spent £50 million on nondescript interchangeable midfielders and wingers whilst still not getting a centre forward who can hold a ball up.

We have a manager who never played professionally and has never managed previously in any English League who doesn’t appear to know how he wants us to play let alone his best team.

Thirteen points from the next fifteen ? All the evidence points completely in the opposite direction I’m afraid.

Poll: Where will we finish in the upcoming season?

It will be interesting to see what happens to Sheff Utd. They will obviously improve as they can't be any worse than they were under Selles and Wilder is a man who knows how to get a tune out of average players. Will they get back to last year's form and get into the play-offs? They sold a couple of important players but brought in Ben Mee and Danny Ings who I'm told are the solution to every problem in football.

Expecting the present team to acquire enough points to be in touching distance of the top of the table in the next five games, is fantasy.

One of the characteristics of a team in development is inconsistency. The game against Portsmouth was a good example.

Poor first half - better second. We improved again when the subs came on - pity they were too late to influence the result.

The players are still learning how not to play the Martin way. The manager is learning how the Championship works.

If we are top half of the table at Christmas we may be in with a play off shout, but but he end of October - I'd be very surprised.

What?

The manager noted as much after the Ipswich game and he was right.

There are elements to how the team play that belong to the Martin regime, such as short or under hit passes from full backs to central midfield where teams seem to out number our players - as we saw in the first half against Portsmouth.

The defenders in particular need some options other than trying to be pinpoint accurate into a crowded area.

Agreed.

Our play is still too slow and ponderous without enough movement off the ball to give our defenders an option with the ball.

I think a lot of this will be solved when the ultimate Martin clone Downes is removed from the team, which must surely be imminent.

We should have a much more balanced midfield when he is dropped for Jander, who I think will link the play much better.

Why does It take our players so long to learn new ways of playing?
Can we just have a manager cone in and transform us straight away just once?

When was the last time that happened?
Maybe when Pochettino replaced Adkins.

Hull - Going to stick my neck out 3 Points - We should be beating these ffs!
Boro - 1 Point. I'd be surprised if we can break them down with the way we are playing.
Sheffied Utd - Nil Poit. They will have the Wilder bounce and away will be tough.
Derby - 3 Points. Only there 2nd season up and they aren't as good as the Skates.
Swansea 3 Point . Meat and drink like 2 seasons ago, or at least should be!

I'm an optimist but 16 Points from 10 games would seem to be the best we can do and although we haven't blown promotion, We need vast improvement to head in that direction.

I do agree with you here.

Fans keep blaming a manager that left 9 months ago and we are now on our 3rd manager since Martin left. How long will Martin still get the blame?

As for how long it takes for Still or impose his playing style, Martin got the team playing his way in our 1st game at Sheffield Wednesday where we made about 1000 passes or something during our 2-1 win.

Still has had all summer to get the team playing his way and so far we’ve not seen it or if we have his way is shit .

He’s now got the players he supposedly wanted time to show us on the pitch by getting results to challenge for the play offs.

To get 6 th place is normally around the low 70’s points or around 1.6 points per game . We currently are averaging 1.2 points per game.

Getting 10 points in our next 5 will get us back up to averaging 1.6 points per game and challenging for the playoffs.

Over to you a Will.

You are correct.
Sport Republic bought players this summer but still came away with £62m profit after sales.
This will help redevelop the Northam Gas Site.

I fully expect us to below 1 point per game having played ten. My confidence in the team is even lower than theirs. We have a bad case of the Dunning-Kruger effect.

I did say that we hadn't blown promotion to be fair. Imagine if the late show against Wrexham didn't happen and Skates Crossbar effort bounced in, instead of out. I think we have had a decent amount of luck to be on 6 points.

I am hopeful we'll improve to challenge for the playoff spots at least though.
