Had a drink with him and David Constant in the pub next to Lord’s prior to attending a Lord’s Taverners’ “do” in the 1980s and he suggested he took my mate’s girlfriend down the road to the chippy. Lovely guy. RIP Harold “Dickie” Bird.

Possibly the best umpire to have graced the game

At a time when home umpires where under intense scrutiny during test series... there was never a whiff of Dickie being biased

And as stated a gentleman as well.

RIP .... and howzat Dickie

Sad news. I saw him a month ago at a one day match at Scarborough where he was stood next to the boundary chatting.

Meet him on two occasions. Firstly at a sportsman’s lunch when we were the first to arrive, apart from Dickie of course, he was in the kitchen getting a cup of tea, stood and had a lovely chat with him before the numbers increased. And secondly at a book signing. Went into Waterstones to get another book around 7pm and there was Dickie, still sat at his table with a few books left and nobody to talk to. Spent another half an hour chatting away and of course bought his book, two I think, one for my Dad. What a lovely and very charming gentleman he was. Never forget the Saturday of the Lords test in 1976 when there was a bomb scare. Thousands sat with him on the outfield, and Dickie was there making sure nobody ventured onto the pitch.

RIP Dickie, and thanks for the chats.

He was my favourite umpire. RIP Mr Bird.

Though cricket has me stumped, in fact I frowned so often I have permanent forehead creases, Mr Bird bailed me out with his easy explanation of the game, never once gave me the finger for my ignorance. He'll be missed.

if you wanted to find the definition of an English Eccentric, you would say Dickie Bird.

His own man and a character who was always himself.

Definitely had an interesting life and did so well.

if you get to 92 and your work is also your hobby and you achieve at the level this man did, you can look back in Dickie language, say,

"It was reet grand !!!"

RIP Umps

His favourite bands were Iron Maiden Over & Buddy Holly & The Cricketers, although he liked swing the best.
No disrespect, he loved a joke himself.
RIP Dickie.
