Am I the only one that doesn't put the fan chant together with the song it came from? I'm not. I can't be!
Like, different parts of the brain not connecting? (Or working, but let's leave that to one side, ya?)
It's like a musical version of Idiot Eureka.
Like Gallen's 'Magic Hat' is 'My Old Man's a Dustman'. Sang it for years before I made the connection.
The latest one, and I really hate this one, is "We've Got Varane....." which I know every club has a version of. It was in my head this weekend, and then! Fan Chant Idiot Eureka!
I'm singing 'Achy Breaky Heart'. I hated that song. It was the enemy. It's the song that the lad with the scythe would sing when he'd come calling for me.
And now I'm singing it?
So what songs/tunes do our chants come from?
"The opposite of love, after all, is not hate, but indifference."
2-1 you only beat us 2-1, everyone else scores 3 as probably one of the best off the cuff so his have heard, up at Man City sung to “blue moon” after a long run of conceding 3 goals a game.
Two more recent ones coming to mind are “Win away” = Lion Sleeps Tonight (Wimoweh) and “Oh Bobby Zamora” = Seven Nation Army which is unusual as it only uses the guitar riff and not the song melody.

An interesting one is to think of song tunes which were once popular, but have now disappeared as the song itself disappeared from popular culture.
Like, football chants based around The Automatic's "Monster" was quite popular for a few years in the late 2000s, but as the band and song disappeared into obscurity so has football fans coming up with chants to it.

If only Pascal Chimbonda was any good.

We all dream of a team of Gary Breens, to the tune of Yellow Submarine is both genius and random. I’m sure Breen is on record as saying such a team wouldn’t actually win much.

Hey Jude - na na na nana na na Wild Rover - the finest football team, the world has ever seen Jingle Bells - when Rangers win away Knees up Mother Brown (who ate all the pies?) Winter wonderland - walking in a .... wonderland Singing the blues (...when Chelscum lose)

I remember we were singing that about Dom Ball for a while, including at the pub with Dom Ball and all his mates before the England Italy Euros Final in 2021.

Chicory Tip is the one that springs to my mind because I bet most football fans of today have no memory of it as an actual record. Maybe "Go West" is heading the same way?
(As of yesterday I owe Paul Gambaccini - I know, look it was a 3-hour drive home - for the fact that it was written by Giorgio Moroder, as in "I Feel Love" by Donna Summer, which seems weird.)
Originally recorded by him as well, that's where Chicory Tip heard it. They sing slightly different lyrics to GM's original version as I think they were probably originally listening to it on a crackly medium wave radio and probably couldn't make out exactly what he was singing.
