Am I the only one that doesn't put the fan chant together with the song it came from?
I'm not. I can't be!

Like, different parts of the brain not connecting? (Or working, but let's leave that to one side, ya?)

It's like a musical version of Idiot Eureka.

Like Gallen's 'Magic Hat' is 'My Old Man's a Dustman'. Sang it for years before I made the connection.

The latest one, and I really hate this one, is "We've Got Varane....." which I know every club has a version of. It was in my head this weekend, and then! Fan Chant Idiot Eureka!

I'm singing 'Achy Breaky Heart'.
I hated that song. It was the enemy. It's the song that the lad with the scythe would sing when he'd come calling for me.

And now I'm singing it?

So what songs/tunes do our chants come from?

"The opposite of love, after all, is not hate, but indifference."

The best one is
'Kone's on fire your defence is terrified'
Cos it's a proper tune n she's bella bella, la luna, te lo darò etc*

Da yoof init.

Louder than us old folk, I join for a verse before my back goes ;-]

I like the Koki one, doesn't work as well in the ground though.

The adams family tune sung to Kiddiminster always gets me, its harsh but very good.

Slightly related but on an LSA or one of Mels coaches we were heading up North and most of the coach were singing the usual Rangers songs when all of a sudden they started singing about Marc Bolan getting killed on Barnes Common I can't remember the words but 90% of the coach were singing It, I looked bemused at my lad and he looked bemused back.
Most of the coach were singing It.

Chicory Tip! I had no idea.

How random. 1972. More than a decade later it became a chant for two Gary's - our Bannister and some Lineker lad.

The only chant i am jealous of Brian, sung by other clubs that wish we had it as a tune for a song for ourselves, is the "Feeling glad all over" chant sung by Palace fans.

Its a real buzzy upbeat song that sounds brilliant when a great majority of their fans sing it, after scoring goals..

Pigbag is good but would not mind another one for celebrations now...

Any suggestions people ???

Yeah I know what you mean, is it because the football chant version becomes "the" version, so the connotation with the original song is lessened?

There's absolutely loads.

"Park, Park, wherever you may be..." (and other such variations) = Lord of the Dance, Dubliners

"You're not singing any more" = A Welsh hymn I think?

"Oh West London is wonderful" = when the saints go marching in.

'Bread of Heaven' is the Welsh one you are thinking.

Chicory Tip is the one that springs to my mind because I bet most football fans of today have no memory of it as an actual record. Maybe "Go West" is heading the same way?

(As of yesterday I owe Paul Gambaccini - I know, look it was a 3-hour drive home - for the fact that it was written by Giorgio Moroder, as in "I Feel Love" by Donna Summer, which seems weird.)

Other fairly ancient tunes, still surviving in football grounds:

Que sera, sera (Doris Day, and still sung with some of the original lyrics, at that.)

The Stars and Stripes Forever (better known as "QPR, QPR, QPR") by (it says on Wikipedia) former US Marine Band leader John Philip Souza.

The Beach Boys Sloop Jon B get used a lot.

"You have to live here/ We get to go home" is my favourite.

Or maybe "He's got a dry scalp" sung at Joe Hart when he'd just started the Head and Shoulders ad :-)

My favourite ever chant is unfortunately a 'pool original but I'm sure a number of suitable targets have played for us but not the supporting cast whilst they were here.

Don’t blame it on the Biscan,
Don’t blame it on the Hamann,
Don’t blame it on the Finnan,
Blame it on Traore,
He just can’t, he just can’t, he just can’t control his feet...

The old "Give us a Q... give us a U etc. what have you got? Sore throats " always gave me a smile but no tune I am afraid.

The grass is always greener.

Where’s your Mama gone (chirpy chirpy tweet tweet) by Middle of the Road became “Where’s your Parrot gone” when David Seaman, playing for Arsenal brought his pony tail to Loftus Road

Someone on one here started the Dry Scalp one.

IIRC there were three chants in total that day.

The second one being "He's got perfect hair" for Julio Cesar.

Too funny.

Back in the day of the daphne special and case loads of lager a fair few songs were invented on the long trips up tut north .

A mate has postulated this theory. The songs are born on away trips on coaches and trains. Given their first airings at away grounds. And if they catch on will soon be sung at home.

Here’s one I heard 100 years or so ago, sung by Arsenal about us - it made me laugh. Can’t think of any other uses for it so could be a one-off. Haven’t heard it for a while.
