Forget the obvious destinations such as New York, Paris, Los Angeles, Rome, Prague, Amsterdam, Barcelona etc, all places I have been and liked (Well not Paris) where have you been that not many chose to visit

1. Chicago- My favourite city in America, much better than New York it is sport and music crazy and has some real iconic buildings as well.

2. Shanghai- A city of two halves one part Chinese and the other like New York, again a great City to wander around and take in the different vibes

3. Hamburg- Like Chicago gritty and they like a bit of football and music

Small cities

1. Thimphu - 'Shangri-la'; the happiest place in the world

2. Jeju City - a hidden paradise

3. Gondar - fascinating place with great history and lovely people

Big cities

1. Sana'a - the most beautiful architecture of any capital city in the world

2. Pittsburgh - surprisingly beautiful and interesting

3. Montevideo - I know all of the big cities in Latin America and places like Buenos Aires are great, but this one is less frenetic and tends to get overlooked even though it's got a lot going for it.

My main experience of Chicago is don't go there in january, it has to be one of the coldest places i've ever been in my life (cracking city though).

For me i'd go

1. Catania, a bit rough round the edges but the food is some of the best i've ever had in the world and there's tons to do.

2. Hyderabad, incredible food, wonderful people and some amazing history. Most people go to the cities like Delhi (which i hated) or Mumbai (which i loved to be fair), buy hyderabad is amazing.

3. Salamanca, no idea why this gets overlooked when people go to spain but the combination of history, culture, bars and food is amazing and it's as good as any of the big tourist destinations in Spain (and a lot cheaper too)

I'd add Charleston in South Carolina (just not in summer - opposite to Chicago in winter, never been anywhere more hot and humid in my life and that was only mid June). It's a modern southern City/town with great food, music and bars.

Also Boston is a great place for both Sport and American history. You can also travel up the east coast of MA and ME and end up in Acadia national park if you want to extend the trip. Lovely spring/summer/autumn time but a bit brisk in winter...

I agree with a lot of these suggestions.
Went to Valetta this summer and it's fantastic. Beautiful and historic - although it was unbearably hot in the small streets.
Chicago is brilliant. Although I did indeed go in January and the wind comes across the lake and straight through the streets and it was brutal. Some amazinng live music bars though if you like blues or dance music.
Hamburg was great. Loads of live music

And Quebec City - oldest settlement/city in North America. Beautiful old town and great food everywhere. While it's very cold in winter, it's beautiful with lots of outdoor winter activities to do. I'm going back this Feb.

Valetta is wonderful - as is the whole of Malta - aka 'The jewel of the Med'. Lots to see and do on the historical island (as well as neighbouring Gozo) but yeah, you have to pick your time of year to go as it's not that far off the North African coast & can get mighty hot! We're going again in May next year as it's the missus's birthday. Any later than that & I wouldn't be going until around now (late September/October) when it's still lovely and warm and sunny but not too hot.

Loved Hamburg although it's been a long time since I went (too long infact). As you say, lots of live music & you can't go without visiting the Reeperbahn. I first went there in 1979 when my ship paid a 5-day visit. I was only a nipper and boy did I have my eyes opened! Me and the lads walked into our very first bar ever on our first day, In Hamburg, called The Liverpool Bar as it happened, and there behind the bar were 2 gorgeous barmaids serving... both totally topless, with tellies up in each corner showing hardcore porn filthy smut movies! Bearing in mind back home in good old Blighty at that time, Mary Whitehouse was front page news saying that Britain was becoming a seedy grubby place with too much filth on the telly & trying to ban 'Men's magazines', The Sun's Page 3, etc!

I am with you - Chicago is a great city but I personally would plump for NYC all day long. So much to do and see there, Brooklyn, Coney, Bronx etc.

Auckland is a cracking city and if I lived anywhere else in the world, that would be high on the list.

Agreed, saying Chicago beats NYC smacks of someone who has done two weekends there
As you say so much to do in BK, Harlem and so on its not just manhattan which people often think and you need to know where to go too

Ah, Sana'a, Yemen.

I worked there from '92 to '97 for Yemen Hunt Oil - offshore Red Sea ( Hodeida ) and up in the desert at Marib. Indeed there is some amazing architecture in that country including some of the first ever tower blocks.
Well remember the flights up the mountains from Hodeida (12,000 ft) to Sana'a in a twin engined Bell Huey occasionally being shot at by the AK47 carrying locals...great place.

To be clear, Harlem is part of Manhattan. Appreciate not a heavily visited area beyond the Apollo.

And there are some even more beautiful towns, like Thula and Hababah, in the mountains around it. Real hidden gems.

Did you chew the khat? It always gave me a sore throat, but you had to share it in order to be sociable with the locals, often at the top of those medieval tower blocks.

The Khat just gave me a headache, but yes, just to be sociable.
Lovely people, shame they've been hit with civil wars and other conflicts.

One of our watering holes was the British Embassy club bar in Sana'a run by the notorious Mr
Douglas Scrafton.
