| Left wing/Right wing English clubs 09:17 - Oct 21 with 7915 views | TeddeRs | Thinking about the furore over banning Macabi fans from Villa and the recent cancellation of the TelAviv derby between Macabi which attracts right wing fans and Hapoel which attracts left wing fans. Does England have any clubs that have a recognised left wing following - i.e. in the style of St Pauli? I think of us a genuinely integrated, community focussed club but apolitical. | | | | |

Les Ferdinand's first autobiography has a whole chapter on why he scored so many goals against them, and why their tentative offer for him in 1996 got laughed out of town, because it was always the worst racist abuse he received anywhere as a player and he was always determined to absolutely hammer them for it. I remember going there with my dad and his mates in 94 (drew 2-2, Ferdinand scored because of course) and doing hospitality. Daniel Amokachi was making his debut for them (scored, because of course) and it was a fcking huge, divisive deal that a black Nigerian was turning out for Everton for the first time that day. All of that has been forgotten, in a way Chelsea selling National Front magazines on the Shed End hasn't.

| Left wing/Right wing English clubs on 17:00 - Oct 21 by 100percent | I've followed England to at least 4 world cups and countless European competitions. I have now come to the point that I seldom travel, and if I do I'm selective about where I go and where I stay. The England fans IMO have become increasingly xenophobic, with a strong sense of entitlement - especially post Brexit. I'm not sure if these 'fans' are right wing, or just enjoy being aggressive, inflammatory and belligerent whilst abroad. It generally stems from behaving in a manner that either belittles the host nation or just brazenly insults them - that generally manifests itself in overtly racist tones. and drunken rhetoric As a result I will occasionally travel, but stay away from the main pinch point areas and commute into the games. I'm sure we are not the only country that are suffering from this issue - I've also been a football tourist many times, taking in the Milan derby, Spanish el classico etc etc. As I don't speak the local vernacular, its difficult to say whether their attitude is right wing based - apart from the obvious games I have visited like Lazio/Roma for instance. I'm all for everyone enjoying themselves - especially when it comes to the beautiful game - but definitely not at the expense of others. Similarly, whilst I will always remain proud to be English, I don't want to be associated with the behaviour and attitudes that have become far too common place at England away games for me. |
Agreed, the pathetic addition of "no surrender" in the middle of the national anthem pretty much sums that element up.

True. Racism was very big in that part of London long before it became more broadly trendy. I have a good mate who's a Charlton fan. He's mellowed now but when I first worked with him when we were not long out of school I was shocked at the very strong racist views he held. Growing up in Harlesden as I did, we just took everyone as they were as all colours and creeds lived there.

| Left wing/Right wing English clubs on 20:07 - Oct 21 by MrSheen | A friend of mine had an Italian lodger who supported Roma. I asked him how it came about that Lazio were the right wing team and Roma were the left. He laughed at me and said that Roma had plenty of right wing fans too, just fewer than Lazio. The two groups occupied different ends of the stadium (the right on the Curva Nord), but if they met each other outside or in the City, there could be trouble so you always had to have your eyes and ears open. This was about 2000, but I doubt much has changed. I can’t see any attraction in that, any more than family members falling out over politics. |
Yeah Roma have their fair share too - unfortunately got caught up with some of their lot getting off the train at Vicenza and got marched to the ground by the police, most of them giving plenty of fascist salutes along the way...

| Left wing/Right wing English clubs on 17:05 - Oct 21 by Paddyhoops | Funny thing happened to me at the Bristol game. We got searched by security on the way in and the guy was perfectly polite . As I was getting a pretty awful burger at the food outlet, a bloke who just been served said to me “ Those security guys all look like terriorists” . He was then expecting me to have a conversation to conform with what he had just said on the basis I was a white Caucasian . I just said I was Irish and don’t get involved with topics like that . For obvious reasons. I think we’re a broad church at QPR but we’re living in a fractured society now which is sadly making its way into football . Sad really . |
I was stood next to a guy on the concourse at Bristol who’d basically been approached by another fan and questioned about how a black man was a rangers fan. “I’m from Shepherd’s Bush” he said.

I used to work with a dyed-in-the-wool, family had been going for generations, Everton fan and he was very explicit about the rampant racism in both Merseyside clubs. Blamed the refusal of Everton to recruit youth players from postcodes with high ethnic minority populations for a lot of the decline of the club (of course, Les Ferdinand can tell a story for two about that sort of thing, too.) For a scouser, he was unusually critical of the whole city - called it "self-pity city" and said that the whole 80s depression thing was skating over the extent to which the city had largely grown up through doing very nicely in importing stuff made by slaves (even after they stopped exporting slaves) and when prosperous had looked down on Manchester for actually making stuff.

I’m talking about Accrington Gramsci. After winning the Lancashire District Cup in 1980 they refused to acccept the trophy unless sheep (and llamas) were given the vote. And of course in the south we have Tonbridge Engels.

| Left wing/Right wing English clubs on 14:01 - Oct 21 by ted_hendrix | Michael Gove's ST was three rows In front of me In the Lower Loft. I am so far removed from his Political persuasion but I still consider him to be a QPR fan just like me, an example of my Political persuasion Is one of the proudest moments for me whilst working was being made a Union Convenor for the AUEW, I've still got my Union card. And there you have It, I don't care who sits near me, why are we obsessed with labelling everything? |
Wasn't it that Gove only holds a season ticket to QPR as his son wanted to watch Chelsea, and he deemed it too expensive, so he took him to QPR instead? Also, helps his PR saying he's a man of the people, you know, watching Football and not Rugger and all that. I would guess that he's not really a fan, and it's all for his son. Fair enough. We seem to have a few lefties, which is, of course, ironic considering our name!

My memory was that he wasn't a fan but his son wanted to go to football and he thought it better for the lad to go to a "proper" club rather than a Premiership side. Might all be bollocks but if true it's pretty sound thinking IMO. I've no time for the bloke's politics, but it's possible for people you disagree with to still be decent fathers.
