This season......your thoughts. on 12:08 - Mar 25 with 1642 views | Wegerles_Stairs | Disappointing. After the 4-0 hammering of Leeds, I really thought we'd push for a play-off spot this season. Apart from the parachute payment clubs, the Championship is fairly even and we're three points above Portsmouth and Oxford which shows a lack of progress. Recruitment has improved but still plenty of work to do - we need to be far stronger and aggressive, so when we go to the likes of Millwall and Portsmouth, we don't just wilt like a soggy blancmange. Oh for a Shaun Derry in the centre...and an Adel...and etc.

This season......your thoughts. on 09:46 - Mar 25 by stevec | Feels like a missed opportunity as this is a particularly weak Division. Fair to say the amount of injuries have decimated us, but even with a fully fit squad the front four wouldn’t scare any opposition. That’s been our major problem for years and we never get anywhere near solving it. Our pre season preparation has stank for some time, it’s no wonder we start bad and the injuries pile up. I like Marti and think he gets the best out of most of the players, but he’s set on a particular style of play that requires far better players than we, or indeed this league, possess. There’s a gap between idealism and realism that the manager needs to come to terms with. |
Or, the club is set on a style of play...

Never bought in to this. That sort of luxury is for the Man City's of the football world not a mid table Championship club on a tight budget. Makes you wonder what our style of play is after signing Madsen.
This season......your thoughts. on 13:07 - Mar 25 with 1498 views | Wilkinswatercarrier | I'm not understanding why people think we have been unlucky with injuries this season. If you buy injury prone players and have a threadbare squad it's inevitable. I'd also add that if you can't play a possession based game injuries are more likely to occur. Oh, and let your head of medical sod off to America. No such thing as bad luck, just pss poor planning.

This season......your thoughts. on 13:32 - Mar 25 with 1435 views | Harbour | Hated the first half of the season enjoyed the middle bit now not enjoying the last bit.positives the youngsters showing signs of progression Morgan Kholli morrison and Lloyd. Negatives the injuries frey chair colback cook kholli and the poor signings madsen Ashby celar. The drop off in performances away from home some days looked like we could be bothered. On a positive note enjoyed turning over Luton 3 times. Shame we could not raise our game against top 6. [Post edited 25 Mar 13:36]

This season......your thoughts. on 13:35 - Mar 25 with 1429 views | Boston | We've underperformed. Injuries have been a major factor but, I think Marti cost us points in a number of games. No blame game, just decisions which didn't pan out. I expected us to finish in the top half of the table, and there's a good chance we will.

Strongly agree with Brian Mac here the whole season has been a pretty big disappointement IMO. The way we finished last Spring and Marti having a whole off season to imprint his style on the players should have led to a way better season I think. I felt strongly our 6 or 7 game losing streaks were over when Marti arrived and steadied the ship but we were 5 points adrift at the end of November Once we went on that great run I fully expected us to push on but once again another soul crushing losing streak and now we are in no mans land . Even if we finish strong the excitement is gone for me and who knows what the summer holds it certainly wont be anything as posotive as last year and if Marti walks then anything goes
This season......your thoughts. on 21:13 - Mar 25 with 1071 views | stainrods_elbow | I realise I'm in a minority/outsider position (usually the best place to be - 'you see more from the margins' etc.), but for me if Marti walked or was even give a gentle push at the end of the season becaase he or the club felt his race was run, I'd be disappointed but not devastated. I don't think he will, actually, but if he stays, the club needs a strong pre-season, and he needs to hit the ground running at the start of next. The squad is not strong enough, or deep enough, or consistent enough, and the coaching team still has to convince me they can oversee an improvement next season that is tangible and lasting.

This season......your thoughts. on 22:22 - Mar 25 with 1034 views | Myke | We are pretty much where I expected (hoped) we would be at this point. i just didn't expect it to be so dichotomous in terms of results and performances. I thought we would be bobbing along in (lower) mid-table all season, ultimately nudging up around 60 points, thereby signifying progress. Instead, by November I thought we were gone, by January - even though I never seriously considered the play-offs - I was very satisfied. Now? Now I just want it to be over.

This season......your thoughts. on 23:03 - Mar 25 with 969 views | dannyblue | I disagree it's a small squad. It's a big squad*. It's just not a very good one. Season has been disappointing, but there's always the next one. Nobody felt optimistic when Warnock joined in March 2010... *Of those who've played games, we have 8 defenders, 6 central midfielders, 5 attacking midfielders, 4 strikers. At times Madsen couldn't make the bench.

This season......your thoughts. on 08:29 - Mar 25 by kingsburyR | Not sure our purple patch can make up for the horrendous start to the season. With our current run of form the equates to over half the season where we were utter tripe! Currently going through the annual "will I bother with my season ticket next season" |
All this. The way we ended the season, I was really hopefully this time round. WBA to start was a bit of a wake up call, but to be bottom of the pile with all the new signings bar Nardi flopping all over the place and Anderson a shadow of last season's place, it was really hard to take. By Portsmouth (h) we were down utterly down. But then the Jimmy Dunne show. Let's not kid ourselves, Marti's team, when on the front foot is dependent on the big fella as an out ball. All these little 10s can't stand up to the rigours of Championship football and we still do not have a regular goalscorer. And then to top it off, we have no defence for next season. I was looking for this to be a season of consolidation, improving on last season's finish before a summer where the "missing pieces" were two or three first team signings to push on again next season. Instead, we're liming into next year with a first team of which maybe 4 or 5 will be here next season and they're not even the good, proven ones. Absolutely bricking it for next season with or without Marti - I genuinely do not think that they are anywhere near replacing Dunne and fear for the quality of signings we're going to get - their full back selections have been utterly abysmal and we have none left in the building now. Always said Kakay was a decent back up (he isn't, but compared to Heverton and Ashby...). So, overall, very disappointing.

I think the seemingly forced return to whatever system we had to play prematurely ended what was looking like a half decent season for me. Throw in some Yang nonsense and you have to wonder what the plan actually is sometimes. Whatever it is, it seems to cause more than its fair share of friction.

Was hoping for 60 points and thought it was realistic after a great winter but frankly I’d take getting to 50 now with what players we have available. Disappointed again . No question of not renewing though . We plough on .

This season......your thoughts. on 09:17 - Mar 25 by BrianMcCarthy | Very disappointing, I'm sorry to say. A summer of shocking recruitment and a farcical medical performance led to a dreadful autumn. Cifuentes also must regret his tactical set-up given the players he had at his disposal. A superb recovery, a superb performance by management and players had us three points and three places from the play-offs, but when a very quiet transfer window closed we still had most of the structural problems we had in August, prompting the thought that we'd pressed up hard against the FFP ceiling back last Summer. Predictably, the injuries have continued. Predictably the small and unbalanced squad has failed to cope. Predictably, some of the drive and belief has ebbed from the squad. I'm not jumping on the bandwagon when I say that I'm worried about Cifuentes leaving. I've been worried since the January transfer window closed. He doesn't have a record of staying long at clubs, and each passing transfer window here leaves him no closer to a settled and competitive squad. Cifuentes is not perfect. No manager is. But he's the best manager we've had in a long time. Last Summer we had a good manager, we had momentum and we had FFP room. In short, we had a generational window. Hard to believe right now that we didn't blow it. As for Nourry's antics off the field, I find them insulting, I feel they display poor leadership, and I worry about his ethics and judgement. A very disappointing season. |
Predictably, the injuries have continued. Predictably the small and unbalanced squad has failed to cope. Predictably, some of the drive and belief has ebbed from the squad. I think this is a little unfair. Bar Paal earlier in the season (notably against Boro), we've had cover for every position when the dreadful injuries kicked in. We have 4 defensive midfielders for 2 positions, 8 players to play in the 3 behind the striker. Cover at CH. Light on strikers, but we only play with 1 and have 3. We had a couple of players who didn't adapt to the league as hoped, but it's a tough league for those who have played in it for years, let alone a novice. Madson has really struggled as it's gone on, but he isn't a poor player. Next year we'll see if he's gonna kick on, or go back to a leagure that suits him better. Bar Benny, who we haven't seen enough to judge, I think our squad is pretty well balanced for our budget, and I'm happy when most of our players have to step in. Obviously you want your best players on the pitch, but our purple patch started when we were rock bottom with injuries. The settled (picking itself) team found their feet and rhythm, post chopping and changing for weeks on end. You can't underestimate the force that is a settled side

I am a fan of Marti but agree he's far from perfect. Games like Portsmouth away I'm standing there wondering what our plan is, why it seems so ill-suited to the situation (i.e. a very physical side pummeling us) and why he isn't changing it soon enough (it was clear at half-time the way the match was going). Of course, Portsmouth are a tough side to get anything from at Fratton Park, but it's those kind of challenges that he needs to solve if we're ever going to move towards the top end of the table. Being well beaten by a promoted team with a midfield containing two of our released players from last season doesn't suggest progress... [Post edited 27 Mar 14:06]
